Clarity... Why not?

Elindiir··3 votes·1,840 views

I've been playing Morgana quite a bit and the one thing that saves my rear the most is the spell clarity. The massive mana boost means that I can heal myself far more than the heal spell, and freeing up my root has helped me way more than flashing away. Having this extra mana means I don't have to port out, which is helpful when midlaning... Why do't others use clarity?

because mana management. you can make sure you have enough mana, but you can't make sure you have something like flash without actually having flash.

Because you eventually learn to manage your mana to where summoner 13 becomes very situational and eventually, late game, useless. If you plan to buy item 3010 or item 3028 then you should rarely have any problems with mana during the lanning phase. If you like summoner 12 as a spell then I recommend farming until you are able to afford a mana regen or granting item, back to base and then summoner 12 back. Doing this you'll be back to full mana (and health) and have a new item to lessen the burden mana brings with it.

The thing is people kind of forget about clarity. It is really strong to compensate for champs with an ok early game with high mana consumption. Ever since Azir's release I built him with a rod of ages and brought clarity to make sure I always had mana because of his flexibility. Rarely would you ever get close enough to ignite someone in range of your soldiers or want to. It felt more like a waste and clarity is a very big bait for tower dives. Enemy team thinks they can dive you due to lack of mana (on mages this means death in a dive against 2 people) then you surprise them by being able to combo them to death under the tower.

That is a good point there, for morgana, midlaning means using her high cost AOE to annihilate the minions, preventing the other guy from hitting the tower... However, from all of this, its all strong early vs strong late and I still need to play around with that more. If you are paired with someone, returning to base is very forgiving as it takes 1 person to hold the line long enough to recharge. But with midlaning, you are all alone. This is all stuff I need to consider... Do I want to hold the line, or do I want to take the risk and be more effective when the action actually starts...

Because other summoner spells are much more useful once you build some mana/mana regen after laning phase

because other people know how to actually use their mana effectively or just buy rod of ages/morello

I do agree in certain situations clarity will outperform heal, just not as often as heal will outperform clarity. Heal is a better escape via movespeed/hp Heal works on allies Stop playing morgana midlane her soil nerf makes farming with it nowhere near as effective.

Elindiir1 votes

When I have over 20% spell vamp in the first few minutes, and over 40 in endgame, a single soil or even binding will heal quite a bit. Soil after a couple of upgrades outright kills normal minions, and I've never seen a faster way to clear out minions. Because of this, people don't go after my turret much when there aren't enough minions to make attacking it viable.

Why not summoner 12 instead?

Elindiir1 votes

I usually pair that with clarity.

I use clarity in between teleport cooldowns.

By the time I get the mana regen items, the game is almost over, unless it turns into a 45+ minute stalemate. Also, by the time I get the regen needed to stay in the field indefinitely, there isn't really laning anymore and rather rushes and blocking rushes... Not exactly attrition work. Also, there is a tendency that while teleport is on CD (during the slow laning time), my returns to base lead to lost turrets.

looking at your build, it needs a bit of work. building both ad and ap on a champ like morg isn't that ideal. you are losing a lot of damage on your abilities.

I don't so much try to go for AD, it just is a side effect of getting gunblade for spell vamp. I have been experimenting with bloodthirster due to its passive shielding and trying to figure out how effective adding life steal to the mix is. I usually go for archangel's staff and morellon...

will of the ancient is enough spell vamp if you want it, though I don't recommend that even for every game. a lot of things you are doing now won't continue to work once you start to play at a higher level. your mmr says it's at about 600, and bronze 5 is 800 or lower. I'm telling you this just to give you an idea of what level of play you are playing at.

item 3165 this right here is enough to keep your mana up, unless you are spamming your abilities, which you shouldn't be doing. you can get tear also if you want, but it's not too common for people to get both.

reason to get flash is that you can both use flash to engage or disengage. last game, you died 12 times and I'm sure flash might have helped you reduce that by at least one.

I remember when I first started playing, I played around with builds and it's good, it means you are thinking of things instead of following things blindly. you just have a lot to learn about the game still and at your point, I encourage you to practice around with really different play styles and builds and actually see how they work.

Last game WAS terrible.... Sadly, I was tied for the fewest deaths in that game LOL. Most of my deaths were either over the course of 2 seconds, or i got sandwiched. I think maybe 1 of the laning deaths could have been avoided that way... But they were probably very coordinated team... They even had a contingency for whenever the midlaner died, they would sandwich me.

I didn't watch the game so it's hard for me to tell what happened. best thing to remember is not to take the games before level 20 too seriously, you won't have tier 3 runes until then and you should be using this time just to learn what you can about the champs and the game. I don't mean of course just feed or whatever, but don't make winning your main focus, it should be more of a secondary goal.

I've been playing since the start of season 3 and it's near the end of season 5 now so that's going onto 3 years, and I'm still learning small things about the game once in a while and still trying to improve.

You will know when you level up your account and get other summoner spells.

Elindiir1 votes

I have flash, but it really sucks... I usually get rooted and/or chained back anyway....

Trebbi1 votes

The thing is you can use flash for offensive and defensive purposes. Clarity just gives you mana and kinda becomes a crutch for your wastefull/not proper use of mana.

Yes, it might be good in aram, but when you get better at the game you will learn that you need more mobility or dmg or dmg mitigations in your summoner spells.

Not, all champs need flash tough as some champs can go TP + offensive summoner spell, but Morgana is probably not one of those champions.

Im not trying to be mean, but you should probably stop using "Clarity" if you want to improve. Also you should probably look over what you are building to help you from going empty on mana on some champions and change your playstyle were you try to make every spell count more rather then just throwing spells willy nilly(because you have clarity) and use more of your auto attacks to last hit even as mages.

As for the flash comment. Flash before you get CCd or before when you anticipate your getting CCd.

Elindiir1 votes

When I used flash, they would CC me after the flash, almost every time.... I've only been saved by it once or twice. I see why they do, and I do the same to them if I intend to pursue.. In the laning phase, TPing out of mid is not much better than dying if you cant TP back. With clarity, I cut the number of long walks in half... Although, There is a point that I now get, I always worked with the mentality of maintaining a strong defense as priority, and widdling away at the opposition as it comes, and letting that present opportunities to make gains... But If I am less concerned with keeping the opposition bogged down the beginning, I could, in the end, have better striking potential, and not be tied to my turret like I usually am.

I like that you reflect alot in your posts that is a sign of a player that can become good with more experience, I suggest you watch some videos.

I havent seen all of the vids here, but I think most of them have merits and will help you improve as a player.

This game has alot more depth than people may think

When I was starting out the game I didn't use Clarity, but I didn't really have any idea what I was doing and it was mostly just my boyfriend telling me what spells to take. However, at your level I think Clarity is a decent spell because you've not fully learned the ropes of mana management just yet, nor are you going to be killing minions early enough to get mana regeneration in your build quickly.

Clarity isn't picked once you have played the game for longer because mana management becomes a lot easier for a few reasons - people pick up mana masteries (Expanded Mind gives you an extra 75 mana I believe?) and further in the utility tree, Meditation gives you a powerful amount of mana regeneration when you run low (though you rarely get masteries like this except on supports). Mana regen glyphs are also quite good to help you avoid running out of mana (personally I use them on mages because I'm still trying to improve my mana management).

I just took a brief look at your matches and from what I gather you don't build your mana item until quite late, which you should try to not do. Typically your mana item should be the first one you complete, allowing you to spam your spells (and make Clarity unnecessary!) quite a bit earlier in the game.

tl;dr Clarity is a great idea to take at your level but as you advance (not necessarily soon, but eventually) you should try to rely less on it and get better at using your mana. A mixture of masteries, runes, completing mana items early and becoming more clever about when and when not to use your spells means Clarity ends up not really being essential.

p.s. You should start buying boots :) They're really boring items but they're very powerful, you shouldn't underestimate the power of your champion moving quicker! And they have a lot of powerful effects attached when you upgrade them too, for example Sorcerer's Shoes and Ionian Boots of Lucidity are very strong on Morgana :)

p.p.s. Good luck learning League and I hope you have a lot of fun with it :D

Elindiir1 votes

Yeah, I did have a priority of building my spell vamp so that I wouldn't have to go back to heal, but I see your point, I'm switching one reason for another.

I would do that so that I wouldn't have to rely on a very weak heal.

Because, compared every other summoner spell, it is worthless in a fight. summoner 21 Last second shield baits {{summoner:2}} Scouting for things like Baron summoner 1 Leona getting you down? summoner 3 %damage reduction summoner 4 Quick reposition summoner 6 Sticking to targets summoner 7 Heals and speed summoner 11 Standard for objective securing summoner 12 Suddenly, 4 people are bot

Meanwhile, summoner 13 ... It will save you if you get caught with no mana.

Then again, you could also just buy item 3070 item 3010 item 3028

So, community, how would you define the roles of support and midlaner? I want to make sure how I see them is the same as the community. I am just starting to doubt the buddie that got me into LoL

mid lane is often for the apc or assassin of the team.

the support often has peel or sets up kills for their team. a support should really always have some cc they can use to help their team. they will also build a bit differently. the support will build for the whole team while the mid laner will build for themselves.

I'm curious, what rank is the one who got you to start and what did they tell you?

Elindiir1 votes

The person that got me started is Lv 25 and I was told that support is a person that protects a squishy teammate without necessarily being a tank. And midlaners were usually said to be mages that can protect a tower on their own and be able to hold off a second opponent if need be.

hhmmm, that's close, but I wouldn't consider that to be complete. letting a tower fall for nothing is bad, but sometimes the first tower will fall from someone poking even once every time there is a minion wave and it gets pushed to tower in some match ups (some champs clear minions right away and just push really hard). when the first tower falls, it opens up the map for the other team if they know what to do with it.

you can let the first tower fall if it's really low and just back up to the next tower. the second tower is much more important than the first.

as for support, he's not wrong, but it goes past protecting. they also can catch people out for their team like Leona or blitz or thresh. a support is often the play maker since it's too risky for the adc or mid laner to just run in first.

this is a fairly short description in compared to all of the things these roles do.

your friend being level 25, he still is new himself. anyone under level 30 or anyone who hasn't played for a year are still fairly new to this game. takes a long time to actually understand the basics (not master the basics, simply understand them).

Ok, so being a support doesn't necessarily mean being a shielder all the time

right, you can be an aggressor instead (protecting the adc often helps win fights remember though). almost every champ has one form of cc so almost anything can work as a support, but some things better than others. that one form of cc can be used to catch people out or protect depending on what it is.

kat or yi don't have any cc so they don't really work as support at all.

Amelie1 votes

For a level 12 account, there is nothing wrong with bringing clarity to lane.

Level 30 players don't bring it because they don't need it. They have runes/masteries to compensate, rely on blue buff from their jungler, and/or have enough knowledge of the game to do without. You don't need to worry about that right now.

Mongoose1 votes

what the fuck are your builds? ofc you cant keep track of your mana when you build full ad and rush gunblade.
