Kallista bonds to a different person in the same game?

I haven't played Kallista yet so I can't verify this but my buddy said he could switch who he was bonded to halfway through a game. I thought the whole point of the black spear was to only soul bind one person for the whole game? As in, you can't change your bonded partner? Can you?
