Eye of the Watchers vs Frost Queen's Claim

Let's face it, item 2301 is almost completely useless. Let's see why item 3092 is so much better.

First of all, assume you already have item 3098 item 2049 . Now what's the big difference between these upgrades?

Advantages of item 2301 : +50 health +10 AP +50% base MP5 +1 max ward charge

None of these are particularly good. It's not even a very well-spent 550 gold when you only get a tiny bit of stats and +1 ward. Some could say that the MP5 is good, but since you already have +100% from the frost fang, 50% more really doesn't do much as you can already use your abilities in most of the times they are of any decent use, anyways.

But what do you get for upgrading to item 3092 : +35 AP +10% CDR +50% base MP5 +A very good active that not only scouts, but also is a 40% slow for 4 seconds, which is huge in that it so often means you can catch and kill some retreating enemy.

So what's better, 550 gold for the first item or 1350 for the second? The second one gives a lot more usefulness per point of gold spent and is actually extremely efficient since it gives good stats and an active that is like a dream ability for a lot of supports profiding scouting, vision of enemy champions, and a very powerful slow.

I guess one could argue that item 2301 only takes up one item slot, but from my experience, the game is likely over or at least decided before you'd actually run out of slots for the items you're trying to make. So that doesn't seem that relevant right now at least.

Is there some hidden reason to get item 2301 that I just haven't thought of, or is it useless?

item 3092 +Nami Is op, just use the active to set up a SUPER easy bubble(a guaranteed 40% slow for 4 seconds, how could you miss?) into ult. most champs cant survive any follow up from you team when you land that combo. its a free kill ever 60 seconds and less than that if you get a ruby sightstone. I love it and im pretty sure its going to be nerfed.

You also have to keep in mind that you now have an extra item slot to fill. I feel like the trade is worth it, if you feel the need to get the eyes. You get a whole extra item slot for an items stats and abilities you wouldn't otherwise have.

Yeah FQC is very good now.

The only hybrid sighstone item I'd use is Eye of the Equinox (Shield + Sightstone). The other two are terrible.

Yeah, sadly the sightstone items aren't good, I was excited that the item finally got some attention but I always end up taking the plain old one. Slot efficiency doesn't mean much when you don't get the gold to fill that extra slot anyway.

Let's look at a more apples to apples comparison. item 2301 + item 3108 = 1350 gold for combine + item +50 health +35 AP +10% CDR +50% base MP5 +1 max ward charge +1 item slot (since FQC needs to keep Sightstone)

So, the real comparison is the +1 ward and 50hp vs FQC's active. Both are decent vision actives in their own right. The other important thing to keep in mind is that the 800 gold doesn't have to go towards Fiendish. It could be cloth Armor + amp tome towards Hourglass. It could be ruby crystal + null magic (actually 850) towards Aegis items. It could be Cloth + sapphire towards Zeke's harbinger. The other important thing (if the game slows down) is that that item slot does NOT have cdr, and with as many support items that have CDR, you're stuck with less wasted CDR.

Then again, using the wiki's method of cost efficiency, Eye of the Watchers is only 82% gold efficient before gp/10 (as compared to 113% for FQC), so you pay in gold efficiency and the Twin Shadow's active for tempo and that extra slot. I'm definitely not as sold as I was.

This post states a lot of interesting points

The only thing that bothers me is the comparative gold efficiency.

The only reason for the new sight stone upgrades is slot efficiency, getting both your ward item and gold generation item into the same item slot. They are not really good unless you intend to fill that extra item slot with something really good and fast.

it allows you to keep item 2043 in the late game ;)

I'm happy to get the eye and go on faster to more important items like Aegis.

All of the eye toys are about the number of slots they take up. Getting your gold and vision item into one slot is the reason you buy one. If the others weren't more cost effective, there would be no reason to still have them anymore.

You are completely missing the point, the thing is those upgrades give you 1 extra free item slot.

Tough i agree in that those upgrades could be a bit better, either grant more gold than their previous item or at least grant 10%cdr

dont forget that with spooky ghosts you can scout ahead into unwarded areas which is super important this season due to the sheer lack of vision on the map. it can be an offensive active, a utility active, or a defensive active. it is so good with it being a 4 second slow now that its almost viable on a solo laner. not quite due to the lack of AP, but its damn good. 150% mana regen is better than nomicon and it has some CDR.

I have to agree with you Mikulv99, I think the "Eye" support items are pretty much useless. I'd much rather have a 500 health Ruby Sightstone and one of the activated gold items than a lame version of a Ruby Sightstone. Lets face it the "Eye" support items stats just don't do anything for a support. It doesn't improve poke, it doesn't improve survivability very much and only improves mana just a bit. Yet you are totally losing the usefulness of the "active" gold items. The actives on supports are what really make support fun, the "Eye" support items just don't add anything to your arsenal as a support.

I mean id say go FQC, and Then just upgrade your sight stone to a Ruby if you really need it.

Depends on how fast the game is going, tbh. If the game is looking like it will end before you hit 5 items (gotta have dem pink wards), you're often better off getting the sightstone alternative for your support item, as it means you will be heading into another item to push your team further earlier on.

Obviously, some champions synergize with FQC very, very well and the item can be considered core on them. However, on others, it might be better to head into item 3001 item 3105 item 3504item 3110 item 3222 item 3050 etc (depending on what will benefit your team and your presence the most) that much sooner.

Baron of Bread

If I don't feel like I need the slow or I don't plan on getting too many items with actives I will go for the Eye of the Watchers. So it mostly depends on my teams comp and what I need to do in that comp. If I need to be a secondary magic damage source, Eye so I have another slot for AP and it is cheaper than Ruby and FQC. If I have been needing an extra slow, FQC.

It is just situational which to go with.

ZephyrDrake

the only sightstone upgrade that is decent enough to warrant an upgrade over the tier 3 gold item is item 2303 if you don't care about the shield
