I feel like when patch 6.9 happens, I'm done with this game.

I've pretty much always been a support main. It's always been easily my best, in fact, I'd say I was a natural at it that did quite well even the first time I ever tried the role. It felt like the game was reasonably balanced then, and that some champions weren't some absurd amount stronger than I was. But that's going to change, in a really bad way. The support role is already by far the least liked, and it's getting some substantial nerfs in this patch. Less MP5 on the frostfang line and lower health restore on the relic shield line. Not only that, a significant loss of global gold from outer turrets and of global experience from inner turrets means supports will be even further behind in both gold and experience. And they're significantly buffing grevious wounds, which is another support nerf in disguise since almost every non-self-heal is done by a support anyways. And I hear they're also nerfing Soraka way into the ground and nerfed Taric, too, but didn't seem to buff any supports. Oh and they also made the red and blue buffs juicier targets or something like that, which is another buff to champions that aren't supports since supports rarely ever get the red or blue buff. Not only that, but every AP mid that will be any good will likely rush some crazy new Hextech Protobelt -01 which gives tons of stats and mobility + 75-150 + 35% AP extra damage to multiple targets as well. This would make most mids that rushed it be able to pretty much zone a support out of even doing anything in too many fights since someone like LeBlanc could just instakill you with 3 dashes + a flash, allowing them to have bigger zone control of you than the fight even is.

These really hurt supports where they're weak, especially the less gold + experience garbage, and quite possibly could make support players become so rare that people can barely even play games in dynamic queue anymore. So I don't want to switch to another role since after these changes, other roles would probably have like an hour queue times. I feel like it'll make the game not even worth playing to me. Is there something I'm missing that gives this any hope or is the game just ruined because no one will ever want to support anymore?

Alternatively, Riot still does have a chance to change my opinion if they make some balance changes to fix this before that patch goes live. Surely I'd hope they'd listen because of they treat their support mains badly enough, they could just all abandon this game. Riot don't let this happen or you'll ruin the game.

The support item nerfs are largely contained to bot lane in their impact. Tanks were too good at sustaining themselves and their ADCs so their heal is being nerfed and as a result Frostfang/FQC is having its mana nerfed because mages won't need to spend so much trying to poke tank lanes out of lane. This is overall a positive for Mage supports and indirectly buffs Coin.

On the other side of the item changes, Chalice is significantly buffed, as is Crucible and Grail is essentially a new item designed for mage supports - all good changes. Water dragon is better for supports than for anyone else and air dragon is best on supports and junglers, so even the jungle changes have some worth.

You're right about Grievous Wounds and tower gold - not really any way to find a positive or compensation there.

EDIT: Protobelt is totally irrelevant. If you're complaining about that you may as well complain about every buff any other class or champion ever gets.

why is this getting downvoted. this is very true! supports are getting kicked hard to the curb.

the item changes also help a lot of other things as well, example, catalyst of aeons would actually be a solid buy for leona rewarding her for spending mana to go in and give her health, theres a lot of changes and the items are for everyone, not just mages. the meta is def going to shift and i honestly think duo mid might be the new meta with a roaming support, because of the jungle buffs and rift herald/dragon being more important, 2 people to roam to objecteves at any point would be great.

This patch is the first of many reworks comfirmed by RIot. Assassins are next to be reworked to bring them back into the meta that is currently overrun by tanks.

The AP Sightstone is being unchanged and as a support player I buy this anyways, do not worry Riot nerfed Mp5 before and then realized they need to buff it, this time they will undo Grail changes when they realize Morellos is literally the only CDR item to buy now and Grail is so dead weight useless that it might as well not even exist in the game right now

On the plus side since MP5 is being buffed heavily for supports and Anivia's utility is getting buffed, SUPPORT ANIVIA SHALL RISE ONCE MORE!!

I play on PBE and I will tell you something, the Fire Rod's dash is now being reworded, it is 80% movement speed for 0.5 second shooting off fire balls as you travel, it is a lot weaker than people freak out about.

Changes on PBE are good, you will enjoy them, you are freaking out about nothing; but supports do need more impactful itemization and possibly more gold too, but this has nothing to do with upcoming patch, which that vayne tumble "dash" item is cheap for supports can buy it and low AP.

Also they did think about support Zyra and Veigar, so more supports to your roster, maybe support Fiddlesticks too with his new passive (stand still in brush and then run out with a Golden Sun movement speed as your passive to fear the target and kill them; on top of fire rod being cheap enough that supports like annie, fiddlesticks, etc can grab it to help them suicide CC someone down)

Grievous Wounds being buffed was enough to make me drop the game again, personally. You know something is seriously wrong when designers realize a mechanic is terribly designed and then decide to use it anyway.

I guess we wil juat have to build talisman and protobelt as supports now to have any influence.

  1. Yes Athene's is being buffed for supports, I'll give you that, but I still feel that after the grievous wounds buff, supports are still not going to heal as well as before, even with the new Athene's.

  2. I don't care if they're going to update other roles like assassins next. If they make some update that makes supports useless and all the support players leave and no one can even play the game anymore, except blind pick where everyone yells and screams at each other trying to not be support, then the game is ruined. It doesn't matter how bright of a future something has if it dies before it gets there.

  3. I suppose the good argument I see in here is that the meta could change. Maybe we don't even have supports anymore, but a second jungler instead so they're actually relevant. They could come up with some pretty killer ganks and counterjunlging and dragon controls over a team with only 1 jungler. And they could still provide vision with their jungle items, even if they don't build sightstone. Problem is dynamic queue enforces the current meta and your team might scream at you if you go as a second jungler when you queue up as support. Although the meta could just shift highly in favor of mage supports like Morgana, finally gaining a dash that could be deadly in that it could keep enemies inside the range of her ult more easily or just give her more zone control, escape, and damage in general. Maybe just the old traditional supports like Soraka, Nami, and Sona are just going to be dumpstered and we'll just have to live with the new and different viable picks. I guess I could live with this.

Their are still some pro's to the mage changes. And as far the carry potentional for lane bully supports goes. This will only improve. Tank & Sustain support will struggle just a little bit harder now. I can see Morgana support potentionally become a really strong meta pick with the new item 3001 & item 3157 and item 3174. She aleady had access to the cheap cdr options from item 2301 & item 3158. So was far that goes she has much potentional.

As far exp goes, I think think the most simple solution would be changing how assists work so that the supportive player get more rewards from setting up kills for their team. The best way to pull that off is by adding a max champion level scaling that adjust the exp depending on your level & the level of the highest level champion.
