My Experience with Rakan so Far. (The bad parts)

Overall, Rakan has high Ap ratios on his defensive utility that often go to waste due to him having to build tanky to survive his insanely risky playstyle. Unlike ranged supports, you take a lot of damage as a consequence of your kit. You're always either throwing yourself into the enemy team, or throwing yourself into the same dangerous situation as an ally in order to protect them from it. He is especially vulnerable to CC, which can totally flatten any attempt to engage with W and R, getting you killed in the process. His passive is unreliable, but helpful when you time your W with it. His Q is short and slow, and blocked by minions. It's difficult to hit aggressively in lane for sustain, and puts you way out of position to poke with which usually results in you taking damage from the attempt to undo it. Stray minions will block it in teamfights. The delay on W can make it tricky to land. E is pretty short when not used on Xayah, and is crucial to actually getting your heal to who you want to get it to in a teamfight, AND for getting out. You rely on it so heavily for the mobility that really getting the benefit of the shield too is difficult. R doesn't always CC everyone at once, so any follow up CC has to be times after you get everyone closer together rather than near the start. I think it's better used overall AFTER someone's engaged on a group, and the enemy team's blown their CC. It's good at turning around a fight, and helping clean up too. Not the most dependable initiation tool though.

You do a lot of what other supports can do, but you trade safety and reliability for mobility and scalings, which doesn't seem like it's always the trade you wanna make on a support. You don't really even get to abuse your scalings due to how you have to build to offset his playstyle.

given his playstyle, I would trade a lot of his ratios for extra tanky stats and a slightly further e range. Q is still great in team fights. easy to hit after you dash in with w. Since I haven't found a good tank build I like (link or list yours to help an emerging support main). In Lane i dont try to hard engage unless im setting up a gank from mid and/or jg, instead using my w to counter engage and q and e to make sure my carry stays healthy. I was trying to run spellthief, but its just to difficult to proc in first few minutes of game to equal passive gold of coin.

With Xayah, and the added e range, I can be a lot risker, and i by far enjoy that much more.

I don't usually optimize runes, but getting some flat resistances is likely going to help your early game massively. Maybe some scaling AP is a good idea too, since his scalings should be accounted for.

For masteries, I previously maxed out Cunning and dumped the remaining points into Resolve. Taking Windspeaker's. Now I max out Resolve instead for Courage of the Colossus because of how often engaging would almost never be worth the damage I'd end up taking, which is a shame seeing as how Rakan would really benefit from more cdr and the Windspeaker bonus.

Originally, I went for the following build... item 2301 item 3174 item 3800 item 3111 item 3116 item 3190

But I quickly found that this build helped with his strengths where his weaknesses were more important to address. So I quickly swapped to the following build... item 2303 item 3222 item 3050 item 3047 item 3027 item 3190 If they have more CC and magic damage go merc treads instead. I still think you could substitute RoA for Rylai's if you wanted, but only his Q really benefits from it.

Although your attacks don't execute minions, you can use Q to last hit safely while still getting a heal. You can also last hit from a safer distance than true melee supports. Overall the health and additional safe sustain make it my preferred choice over coin. They suggest coin instead of shield because he doesn't get the execute and because they suggest building into talisman for ult comboing. I think it works too, but that means you have to get item 2045. I'd rather just keep the greater total stats and survivability granted by taking item 2303. After the rework the item's getting in the midseason patch it'll grant a shield out of combat to stack on top of your passive, so you'll be pretty safe in trades.

Athene's can still be swapped with Mikael's, but Mikael's gives more mr, and shield and heal power which you don't get anywhere else with this build. The active is useful on yourself tbh. Helps you get more ults off. Athene's synergizes well though, seeing as how you're not usually going to be getting your Q heal without hitting a champion first.

The crit increase from item 3050 benefits Xayah as well, as her E scales with critical strike chance.

I like going the ancient coin/spell thief's start into a rush of oasis or the blue item; then I itemize towards ardent censor and athenes with appropriate boots inbetween for 4 items. then it's situation but i usually like to go a knights vow locket or maybe one of the remaining items: redemption, mikaels, or zekes. and always pinks
