SO Yi has no other counter but bursting him down before he kills you? Also counters everything not a tank. So how about I counter build him. Oh wait he deals true damage with no end due to his guinsoo's + wuju style active. So I build hp to counter him? Wait, most Master Yi's build item 1416 + item 3153 ontop of item 3124. So um, where is the counter here? > > We mentioned CC and bursting him down. His Q can be used to dodge most forms of CC, while his meditate can counteract burst damage. Once again, where is the counter?

there is no counterplay, you just abuse his team early since they pretty much have no jungler, and hope yi doesnt 1v5 later xd

So there is a counterplay, after all.

That works with many junglers - they are useless in early, then they start dominating - isn't that normal? Everyone says how Yi is broken but in reality you can just stomp him in his own jungle and end the game before he even finishes 1-2 items.

Yeah but there is no way to outplay Yis kit itself. Thats why Yi was even played in LCK when funnel was a thing.

Why no way ? You just wreck him and that's it. You can't outplay any champion's kit if he is way ahead compared to everyone else. This way you can say you can't outplay basically any simple champion - trynd, xin etc. But that's not true. And I guess he was played in LCK because he is insane once he gets his core items and thanks to funneling he could do it quite reliably which is important.

Why someone's kit has to be outplayed? If he beats you to death in 1-2 seconds - that just means that the game went too far and your team didn't focus enough.

Fondling Gems2 votes

What he means is that there is no way you can avoid his kit. Take the majority of the the champion roster; they have abilities that can be dodged or flashed away from.

In Master Yi's kit the only interaction players have is interrupting his W, but that is a reactionary tool he uses to block damage anyways, it isn't something you can wait out because he will just kill you.

There is no other part of his kit you can interact with, everything else is self buffs or targeted.

Well, there is nothing wrong with having different problems. It's not like every champion's kit must be built around skillshots like most new champs are. That's what makes this game different (kinda): these kind of champs are usually old ones who weren't reworked yet and it's fine, it's not like every single champion must be outplayed or must have abilities that require skills to hit.

Fondling Gems1 votes

In my opinion every champion should have at least 2 things that can be outplayed in some way shape or form. For example Pantheon is a pretty simple and binary champion, but CC will interrupt his E and you can run out of his ult AOE.

Yi only has a single part of his kit that you can counter, and that is interrupting his W with cc. However his W isn't a damage ability, so he doesn't lose out on any damage by forcing you to hold your CC to counter it.

There is a big difference between a kit being simple and reliable and a kit not having counterplay. Yi definitely falls under the 2nd category.

Both Yi and Pantheon have simple kits with abilities that require little to no skill to hit. There is a big difference in the options players have while facing them though.

I kinda understand what you mean, but.. can't you just kill him? I mean, CC does counter him in general - he's an aa based champion and all other abilities just serve as help to aa efficiently. Well, you can't really counter his E because it's a really passive effect - just a bit of dmg, nothing special. R is same, just a stat boost. Imo, there is just nothing to counter - all abilities (except Q) just serve as boost to his effectiveness. I wouldn't really say he has no counterplay because of it.

Fondling Gems1 votes

I kinda understand what you mean, but.. can't you just kill him?

Killing someone is not counterplay, because it is true for all champion's equally. The only arguments would be for Tryndamere and Karthus, since one cannot be killed and the other can temporarily benefit from death (Infinite mana, ult can't be interrupted). Specifically killing people is not counterplay to a champion's kit. The complaints are less that Yi is super OP, it is that players have no option to directly respond to his kit itself.

CC does counter him in general

CC counters all squishies, so falls under a similar category of the one above. However as I noted cc does counter a single part of his kit, his W, since it stops his channel. The interesting thing to note here is that the way Yi is set up gives him more opportunities to outplay his only form of counterplay than opponents have vs him.

Killing Yi is hard due to his W's healing and damage reduction, specifically it is very strong vs burst. This means that you have to break his W with CC. However if you save your CC to interrupt his W then your ability to directly kill him drastically goes down. His Q also lets him dodge many abilities, CC included. Basically Yi's W gives him more ability to play around opponent's CC than opponents have to play around his W.

Imo, there is just nothing to counter

Which is the issue.

I wouldn't really say he has no counterplay because of it.

Directly counteracts your previous statement.

It is also worth noting that his E and R let him ignore a major form of counterplay, item builds. Yi gets quite a bit of true damage, and his ult "can't be slowed" also makes him immune to attack speed slows. These two effects massively decrease the effectiveness of the items that normally would be best against him. By building Botrk he can cover flat HP, the one stat that is fully effective against him.

Keep in mind that player's issues isn't beating Yi, it is being able to play around Yi's kit.

Well to answer CupCake, macroplay. He's a squishy melee champion whose main defensive tools work in short bursts. This means that Yi sucks at defending sieges. It means Yi sucks at engaging teamfights. Especially as far as the Guinsoo's Conqueror build is concerned, he sucks really bad if you force him to come to you rather than you go to him, as do most Guinsoo's Conqueror users do. He's not even that amazing at splitpushing since Conqueror and Guinsoo's actively rewards him clearing the wave as slowly as possible. That or he's vulnerable in between waves. He's a skirmisher, him and all other skirmishers like Fiora and Yasuo and so on are designed to win in micro mechanics and combat scenarios. Instead, focus on what his kit isn't able to do. He has terrible defensive waveclear. He has no hard CC. His favorite builds require him to be extremely squishy for a melee champion, and makes him incredibly weak if you force him to come to you. Just because you can't 1v1 a champion designed to 1v1 everyone to the ground doesn't mean he has no counterplay.

Not to mention Stopwatch is a thing and that dicks Yi really hard.

Tiniest Turtle10 votes

He has 2 clutch defensive tools. His W and his Q, and his Q has a laughable cooldown. A fed Yi can engage if he wants to. He can push towers easily and ult to get away / 1v1 anyone that comes to stop him. His splitpush is good. I've seen a lot of Yi's do just fine split pushing. The problem isn't that he isn't able to be dueled, it's that he can just farm and then absolutely dumpster a team and they can't do much about it unless the Yi screws up and doesn't Q their CC or dodge it. You basically need an Amumu ult, a Ryze w, a Lissandra W, or any form of instant CC to deal with him and just because there is counterplay doesn't mean it's adequate or realistic counterplay. One champion shouldn't skew an entire team's picks and playstyles just to have a hope of dealing with said champion. If that's the case then it's safe to say the champion is problematic, at least for a large amount of the player base, and needs to be looked at and reworked into something more easily able to be balanced and more fair to fight against.

A fed (crit) Yi can, and should since he relies on surprising and nuking squishies before they can react, a totally different playstyle to the stack conq/rage slowly and 1v5. on-hit But crit Yi is a relic of the past, only played as a troll pick since the IE change, since his function was as a squishy deleter, not an anti-tank dps machine that IE was supposed to make ADCs.

I play MasterYi and I promise that his sieges are garbage compared to a lot of other fine jungle choices. He has no poke whatsoever and very few ways to meaningfully interact with a strong turret defense. And he's not even a wonderful teamfighter compared to other jungle choices - if he's not strong enough to attempt jumps onto the backline in a teamfight and survive, he is useless late game.

The only way MasterYi becomes this mega-monster that the boards are always complaining about is if you play badly and serve him up a champion smorgasbord early. Yeah - if he's a full item or two ahead, your squishies are going to get mowed down - but how did he get there? When MasterYi is even so much as even with the enemy team he becomes one of the weakest jungle choices in the game - if he's not ahead, he's behind, as soon as midgame starts and the laning phase ends anyway. I know this because I do play him. I can't count how many times I've milled uselessly around the edges of a tower siege or even a late-game teamfight where a Graves could be trading and skirmishing at distance or a Volibear could look for a fling, or even where Amumu could start a fight due to being tanky where MasterYi will just get melted.

As with many other threads lately, I feel this issue is exacerbated by the damage meta.

Let's try a 5% global damage reduction day on PBE and see how it goes.

To be fair about the Yi being weak early though, his level 2 power spike with red is nearly the strongest in the game, so a lot of Yi mains who understand this actually take the initiative to invade at level 2 after red. With the exception of Udyr and a prepared Jax, very few champs can outduel him at this stage. The snowball that begins from there, depending on how the game plays out, is what normally starts this unstoppable monster you get at 20 minutes.

He falls off hard immediately at level 3 and has to slowly scale up as a hypercarry, and that is his "early" weak point that people normally mention.

I never said he was weak early. I don't think he is. He's strong early, but if he doesn't use that strength to snowball, then he falls off at the teamfight phase or in sieges if he isn't ahead.

By the way - Graves and Kindred can also have some very spicy early-game duels with MasterYi. Their dashes and range turn his Alpha Strike from a guaranteed "on you" into a dance - one that slightly favors the ranged jungler in my experience.

Ah yes Graves. Cowsep bitches A LOT about that champ. Might be one of his bans if he stopped banning Vayne. Kindred, lane phase counter, teamfight phase countered because her ult actually lets Yi stack up a full rageblade/conqueror (and refresh his Q by just AA-ing even if it doesn't kill anyone) to instantly wipe out the enemy team right after it ends.

If you build a team comp without cc then that is just a bad team comp and you are justified in losing to the yi or any other champion that is countered by hard cc, same as you would be justified in running an all ad comp into rammus

If that's the case then it's safe to say the champion is problematic, at least for a large amount of the player base, and needs to be looked at and reworked into something more easily able to be balanced and more fair to fight against.

If yi were problematic dont you think his win rate would be a bit higher, even in bronze according to lolalytics his winrate is only 51% when if he so easily stomped comps that dont build around him wouldn't it be closer to something like 53% and the higher you go it just gets lower and in korea plat+ it is 48%. My point is that yi is not as problematic as you seem to think and as a side note these buffs aren't gonna really do much for the champion as most yi's use their meditate as a reset for their autos as sitting in your w is just asking to get ccd out of it. So please for the sake of everyone stop making threads about fucking yi he isn't even good.

He has 2 clutch defensive tools. His W and his Q, and his Q has a laughable cooldown.

You mean the Q that has nearly 20 second base CD at level 1 and nearly 15 second CD at spell level 5? Yeah sure, he can cut down its CD by AA, but it's still a solid 15sec-10sec even when he's wacking away your ass, and it also requires him putting himself at a risk given you know, he's also in melee range waiting to be CC'ed and mobbed (this remains the case until Yi becomes super fed, in which case much like any super fed champs, he's allowed to win the game). "Laughable" CD is something like Yasuo's entire kit, not Yi.

Also, prior to the current proposed Yi's W buff which we don't know if it's gonna get through, Yi's W currently has (and has always had) a CD of FLAT 35 second. And can be basically interrupted by anything as long as it's not a slow. It's as easy to get rid off as it is, on top of the ridiculous CD for a normal spell (Yeah sure, WW's W active will always be the longest, but he still has a passive section of W that does the exact same thing or rather, the active is merely just there to ignore the spell's activation condition of otherwise a passive spell in nature. Meanwhile Yi's W is a standard spell with a huge CD).

And if you're just mad about the refresh, well, Yi has to kill someone to refresh it and it is also unavailable pre-6, essentially he has to already be winning in order to win more. It's not a problem at all, there are far bigger cancers who front-load their power by becoming a win condition as soon as they do something (which can be as simply as pressing a button, like Vel'Koz pressing R while aiming at the general direction of the teamfight and auto-win if they're all stuck in a choke point), unlike Yi's back-loading where his condition to access the greatest power in his kit is that he's ALREADY won without it.

Yi hardly wins games more often than not, he just makes you feel saltier when you lose. There is a difference.

Honestly I used to vouch for the balance team but day by day im losing my faith in them. How do you say that Kayle and Aatrox AA based kits are ultra bad for the game and worth updating but then Yi with his Highlander walking ball of stats BS is fine?

Buffing Garen to obnoxiousness doubling back and undoing them as if they just forgot Garen is GAREN all the whilst refusing to do anything about his annoying villain system.

Buffing Rengar and Yi while NEFRING Ryze?

Promising to do something about Yasuo then never delivering.

Nerfing Tahm Kench and buffing YASUO?!?

Refusing to put communications in the game but making it MORE and MORE teambased by the patch?

bug ridden lagging client that constantly shits itself if not restarted daily?

adding new features then promptly abandoning them? (hello Clubs,Item Sets,Practice mode and Mastery System!)

a trainwreck of a rune system rework that flipped the game on its head.(playtested for an entire year btw)

AirKingNeo3 votes

wait so if Yi's ult being a stat buff is fair, then aatrox's ult was fair, so what about his kit was bad design exactly? His W? How does that justify removal from the game?

DorkunedAuras2 votes

Because Aatrox is more statchecky, had even lower skill expression, and had an inbuilt sustain mechanic that meant that if he got ahead, he was immortal.

La Bello5 votes

Aatrox had TWO skill shots (3 if you wanna count the ult as a technicality) AND he has to juggle which mode he wanted his W to be in. Yi has literally none and there is no real drawback to his E spell (I mean you lose the damage after it wears off but by the time that happens either you or your target are dead so its a moot point)

"more statchecky" my ass Aatrox had skillshots AND an iota of thought going into his ability to juggle passive bloodwell and W so he could get them all going in a nice engage..

Yi's entire kit boils down pressing E and R then right clicking you while using meditate or Q to dodge anything you toss at him. sure he couldnt drain tank but he wouldnt NEED to if he is evaporating everyone with 3 auto attacks.

As for laning yes Yi sustains just fine. Meditate max Yi is pretty annoying because every 30 seconds (or less depending on CDR) he can reset his entire HP bar under the saftey of tower allowing him to take as many shitty trades as he wants so long as he's got some corrupt pots, biscuits or manaflow ready.

the real truth behind Aatrox getting reworked and Yi not is because Yi actually sells skins. Aatrox was so unpopular Riot really didnt bother making any skins for him (he got like a pirate one and the mecha one) and they constantly talked about how many players would try Aatrox once then drop him so they wanted to fix him.

Yi gets a new skin on a yearly basis. Yi is super fucking popular among casual players and low elo so Riot milks him for all he's worth. Of course there is no way they can outright admit to these levels of favoritism so they just pull a "its good to have ez champs in our game :)" despite them getting so much flak for the current state of easy champs like Tryndamere,Mundo,Wukong,Garen and Singed..

I think Yi is terrible to play against because you can't mechanically outplay him because there's nothing to dodge, zhonya, or cleanse, and pretty much nobody beats the amount of damage he does.

Imo Annie is a good champion because she relies on a stun. Garen relies on his silence. Both of these can be played around, but Yi just has macro counters like counterjungling and winning before he gets 2 items. It just feels bad when he's close enough to be on your screen, presses R, and then realize there's not really anything you can do because you're going to die. You can't run away because of his R, if you CC he can always flash over it, Q, or run around it. And you can't kill him because doing damage makes you stand still, which makes it easier for him to run you down.

Of course you could stop this by getting your 4 teammates to stand on top of you and peel, but that's not going to happen and I don't think that's something you should need to do to survive one champion.

Jax feels better to die to, he's not as fast and you can cleanse his stun or flash away. Flash doesn't help you against Yi. Ekko is more reliant on CC and takes longer to kill you Even LeeSin needs to land a Q and then actually TAKE it giving you a moment to react.

Need Gold 4 Tent2 votes

You can actually kite him with cc. Highlander is only 7 seconds, and he uses 1/4 of it to gap close. Yi can't use Q to gap close because the enemy will just flash/dash away and he can't follow up.

You can't kite yi unless you have 3 allies or 2 jannas.

Yi can't use Q to gap close because the enemy will just flash/dash away and he can't follow up.

using R for flash is a good trade plus the fact he has enough ms to run away so he doesn't die

Need Gold 4 Tent1 votes

And if he's using R for a gapclose, that's ~3 seconds of running at you, leaving only 4 seconds to actually kill you with. 3 seconds of very telegraphed damage in a sense that he's running towards you. It's "unavoidable" in the sense that it's autoattacks but far from being uncounterable.

using R for flash is a good trade plus the fact he has enough ms to run away so he doesn't die

  1. Not every champ has needs flash. In fact more than half the roster now has a flash/dash of some kind.

  2. You greatly overestimate the speed of slowlander, especially since zeal items on Yi is no longer a thing.

The main problem is his reliance on being able to stick to people to be relevant. If you draft CC into him, he's useless. If you draft no CC he facerolls. Yi is a problem champion but one that is very fun to play IMO.
