Can we make Xerath's ult zoom out like Jhin's?

IxtaliKing··368 votes·31,276 views

That would make Xerath feel sooo much better.

Edit: This post is not a request for basically global vision when Xerath ults, it was a request for a partial zoom just like Jhin's. The idea is the ult would function exactly the same and you'd still need to move the camera snipe further targets.

Sadly, not with the current tech.

Zoom outs can only go so far before things start looking bad, FPS goes down, and possible buggy stuff gets more prevalent. Jhin's R only zooms out to a 3500 range cone. Xerath's would have to zoom out to a 5600 range circle. That's a huge difference in amount of visible area.

Additionally, from a mechanics standpoint: while it would be nice for Xerath to be able to see himself while ulting (so he doesn't get killed) it's not actually important for him to see the area between where he is and where he's aiming since his shots can't be blocked. Jhin's R stops on first champion hit so being able to see the whole area is needed for the spell to feel right.

It would make aiming harder, it's already hard. Also, it would feel awkward after all this games as Xerath main. Right choice.

But I want to ask, is there any chance to switch red circle with something? Like, thematically cooler, easier to see.

Even zooming out to the degree that jhin does would probably still feel quite a bit better. Xerath doesn't have to see the entire 360 degrees of his ult and would still need to move the camera around to some degree, but any amount of zoom out would feel more epic.

I agree, even if it could push out vision to 3500 (Jihn's range on ult) would be better than what Xerath has right now.

It's still circle vs cone, which as mentioned, is a huge area difference.

So Jhin's R actually does zoom the camera out?I thought that was something done specifically for the preview.

MrBuffington44 votes

Hype intensifies. 45% CDR Jhin inc, just to see more of the map. Just wait till URF

Spoofghoul4 votes

Lol when urf hits his ult will have higher attackspeed then his basic attacks x'D

Speckleton10 votes

Your not getting the bigger picture all ranged champs get double attack speed on URF

but he'll get double his bonus AD instead [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

We don't need such a high radius, we would be happy with something similar just not to be totally off screen for ourselves too.

Wolfeur2 votes

Can you make the zoom out a standard feature, I actually would love to zoom out a bit sometimes? It could be bound to the C key.

Silents4293 votes

You aren't allowed to Zoom out further to keep everyones viewpoints consistent to avoid getting an advantage just because the screen is bigger for you.

ralsei4 votes

People already do get an advantage to have bigger screens/multiple screens. Source

This is correct. Things outside the 16:9 horizontal range are not updated as often.

Objects are delayed, so if a gank appears on another screen, it may not show up until something shows up in the "main screen".

Particles don't update correctly, nor does it update animations (turning, casting, attacking) properly until you get close enough.

So, as much as you try, you won't get that much. It's actually more helpful to have more vertical space with a square monitor. You can see some korean streamers play this way.

It hardly does anything.

I feel like even making jhin's ult do this is kind of stupid. You're introducing a new mechanic but being incredibly stingy with it. The community will obviously want to see more of this with existing champions. Something going to have to give soon enough.

EDIT: "Sadly, not with the current tech." Please elaborate. This is already in the game, so why wouldn't it work?

I too use to play on a trash computer. My skill was severely hindered by the graphics capability. So would most likely not affect anyone in the higher elo's/professional play which is where riot makes their money.

Cosnirak6 votes

I'm pretty sure Riot makes most of their money from the unranked and low ranked masses actually...

High53 votes

The negativity is disgusting given the legitimate answer provided. Grow up. The new champion doesn't fit my play style or even my perception of the current meta, but it doesn't mean we should bash it and bash Riot.

Cosnirak5 votes

I think you replied to the wrong comment... I was just informing Latetotherace where Riot gets most of their money from. I wasn't bashing anyone or anything. I'm looking forward to Jhin.

Flemman4 votes

if not a unzoom, maybe a "second cam" (size of the minimap) who focus on xerath in the corner of the screen would be a good fit.

giving one champ full vision tool and the other none seems unfair for the same "self root mechanics"

Llanite2 votes

How unfair really? Jihn's ult can be blocked by their allied, hence, the importance of being able to see from distance and picking angles, Xerath only concerns with the location of the target, the amount of obstacles between the target and him do not matter.

Flemman2 votes

not really unfair betwenn them and their target, it's normal as you said that jhin can saw that area giving how his projectile works, I was more targetting the own safety of seing what come for you (not necessary in a straight line between you and your target) giving him faster time reaction to judge if it's better to lose the ult and run or try to aim the remaining shot.

Some other champ can fall in this category of root/long range ult too but, atm, xerath and jhin are the only one with multiple "bullet" to shot

Llanite1 votes

If you zoom to see the entire circle, the targets would be come pea-sized and get harder to hit.

If the zoom is limited to 2000 (same as Jihn's), and the center of the screen becomes Xerath, it will take time to move the screen to the targets. If the zoom centers around the pointer, it will not improve the awareness that you're looking for, albeit would be easier to aim and more like a direct buff than QoL.

Flemman1 votes

that's why I also talk about split cam, feel like you didn't read my original post at all :(

Llanite2 votes

You have to admit the idea isn't clear :D

SettDownShutUp2 votes

I don't think it's so much about 'give me full view' as it is the visual appeal of the ultimate. Er... Xerath's ult is rather... lacking. It's not interesting. I stand by my previous statement that if the ult had more bullets but at less damage, it would feel much more appealing.

Sohleks2 votes

Plus if you actually zoom out so far it'd be harder to actually pinpoint aim the little dot skillshots... It's not really a good idea from a usability standpoint. It just sounds good.

ModKnightsKemplar20 votes

Immobile mage update ftw.

The technology is there.

SpecterVonBaren7 votes

Issue is that Xerath's ult isn't in a cone but a circle, this means that in order for it to zoom out for you to see the kind of view we do with Jhin that all the champions on the map would probably look like ants and so you'd have a harder time noticing details like if a skillshot is coming towards you or something or even seeing the targeting indicator for his ult, or what you're trying to hit.

IxtaliKing3 votes

It wouldn't have to be, all that would need to happen is Xerath gets more vision of the area around him and the ult can be used as normal. You have a very valid concern, but it wouldn't be like that.

LaoBushido6 votes

That video could have been modified to show the range wait for the pbe released to see if it's still adjust the camera . But you still have access to unlock your screen either way

IxtaliKing12 votes

Lol who plays with a locked screen? Jokes aside though, if Xerath's ult zoomed the screen out like that he would be a lot less painful to pick up and play.

IM A RIVEN GOD3 votes

I never thought Xerath was hard to pick up, and I play half locked/half unlocked.

If it zoomed out it would just make it feel weird to use imo

IxtaliKing2 votes

I guess for some people he wouldn't be, but fair enough.

All Day Tay Tay9 votes

i main xerath, i can use his ult pretty well, but i think the zoom would be a welcome feature TO AN EXTENT!. his ult at level 3 has way too much range to be able to see things clearly

ARequestOfDeath1 votes

i tend to use the minimap for aiming long range abilities

All Day Tay Tay5 votes

for finding a target thats fine, but for aiming thats ill advised, as a tiny movement on the map changes the target a lot

KaisadiIIa3 votes

You can't hit skillshots clicking them on the minimap.

But Im Nunu3 votes

You know how you can use your scroll wheel to zoom in? Why not let the player zoom out more? In general, I mean (everyone, not just Xerath). That way, those who want to do so can do that, those who thinks it's not beneficial to zoom out during Xerath's ult don't want to.

ploki1222 votes

Devs already commented on it multiple time, but the idea is that as you get higher resolutions, you're able to zoom out more. By zooming out more, you have access to more information and thus you inherently get an advantage by buying a better monitor (and/or more of them), and this isn't something they wanted. As such, the decision was to impose a reasonable cap.

From my point of view, it's a very reasonable argument. Of course not everyone will agree with that hard cap, but I'd be surprised if someone disagreed with the reasoning.

Nagma2 votes

rip skill cap

Tails Doll36 votes

Moving the screen = skill cap, now?

Photos of Ghosts8 votes

It actually is, it's one of the things that make me lose skirmishes and hence games :D

FlameHalbrdOkido2 votes

ok it should zoom out, but only as much as Jhin's ult does, any more and its too much, so you'd still have to move the screen around but you would have to move it less

DeGasalot2 votes

I have been thinking this exact same thing ever since they released Jhin - Xerath's ult really needs some love and this slight buff would be the best thing for him. His kit is already really fun but half the time I'm too scared to ult or I get lost in the FOW and jumped - a slightly bigger field of sight would be amazing!Xerath
