Is Xerath worth picking up?

My friends new to league and wants to play a ranged AP champ it seems ( mage type ) for the most part.

He says he is interested in Xerath. I was looking at the scaling for Xerath and it seemed extremely mediocre if not completely even with Syndra

Syndras Q has 50 more range too and the other skills arent much out-ranged.

What you guys think?

Xerath Q without charging has 50 less range. When you charge it you get up to 1400 range, aka twice the base range. His W has 1100 base range plus 200 radius putting it at 1300 total damage range without a charge time. E is 1050 range.

Syndra ranges are as follows:

Q 800 W 950 E ~1100 launch range (Not exact number) E 700 cone range

So Xerath far outrages Syndra. His CDs are a bit longer but he has better mana sustain and tends to build CDR more than Syndra too. Less all in but his ult is really fun.

He is pretty strong so long as you don't play into any hyper mobile champs. Can actually lane pretty well into Yasuo so long as you sit far back because his windwall only stops E.

IMO one of the better artillery mages for new players since his kit isn't overly complicated, but still fun to play. Just warn you friend not to play him into assassins.

Xerath is a completely different champion from Syndra and plays differently from her as well. (He is also the one who significantly outranges, not the other way around.)

If your friend is interested in Xerath, he should play Xerath. It's more important that he plays a champion he likes, so he enjoys the game and learns to play it. If he is interested in Xerath and (important, in my opinion) has enjoyed playing Xerath before, there is nothing wrong with him buying Xerath.

Picking the "correct" champion, the one that is strongest in this particular time frame, doesn't matter. It's not going to have an effect on him learning or handicap him in his Level 12 or whatever games and champion's strength changes in time anyway.

The more important thing is that he picks a champion he enjoys.

Xerath's great, particularly if you know what you're doing positioning wise. I consider him to be one of the better picks that's less common in mid lane.

Xerath is good if you can land skillshots. but if you get about 2 early kills and invest in early magic pen you snowball like crazy. But you do need

  1. to be able to land skillshots
  2. to have good positioning(hitting people at max range
  3. to be able to predict your enemies movements(to land skillshots and ult) But overall 10/10 would 1-shot again

As some1 who has played Xerath extensively I have to tell you that the only reason to play him is if you really like him a lot because right now there are a lot of mages performing better.

Ziggs can be destructive botlane and toplane, in midlane Syndra, LB, Ryze do a lot better than him, Xerath range isn't a real advantage because all of the listed characters have far better CC, wave clear and damage.

I'd probably recommend Lux or Ziggs if they wanted a siege-oriented mage, but Xerath is rather good if you can:

  • Space appropriately
  • Land skillshots

He's too skillshot dependent and even if you can land them it isn't half as rewarding as other things. If you want similar champs I'd recommend Lux, Ryze, or Syndra. They require a lot less skillshot perfection and are much stronger.

He's probably one of the best long range poke champs if you can land anything and if you stack tons of AP which btw the highest AP you can get is with Archangle, RoA, Rabadons, Mejais, Ludens, and Voidstaff just to keep your damage relevant you won't need boots just as long as you keep your soulstealer stacks above 15
