after having a good time with Janna soraka and taric, I was like - I hear this guy is doing good, for all I can remember he only has stupid bomb pokes.

OurLestrade2 votesOutside his squishiness, my only real issue with Zilean is that there isn't really much to him. Your throw bombs, slow people, and ult and that's pretty much it. Also mana costs are a thing :P
ShuffledPancake1 votesZilean support is pretty weak but well timed double bombs that stun both enemies are good, and the ult is a life saver (literally), but i'd say go mid, really fun to play.
Sir Fuzzi1 votesHe's an opponent-reliant support, where if they're not falling for his bombs, he's not doing anything to keep the lane spicy. An opponent/opponents that can fake out the bombs easily will have a really easy time with him, I'd imagine.
Blitz suffers the same problem I'd say, if he can't land the hooks he's gonna have a hard time shining.
MorgManBasher1 votesPlat 2, soon to be D5 Ziliean support main here. Pretty much only play him in ranked on my main account. He's very good, better against melee supports but overall awesome. Weak against sivir and cait can be hard if played right. Janna shields more than your bombs do damage so the laning phase against her can be annoying.
His level 1 is pretty bad and you have to make up for it by autoing a lot and procing thunderlords. Try not to waste too much mana before your first back. You don't want to double bomb unless you have to because the heavy mana costs.
get these 2 items first asap
