How would you feel about a Magic version of Death's Dance?

Almost like... some kind of spell vampirism.

Obviously it would need stats that would make it unattractive to Vlad, otherwise Riot might feel compelled to nerf him more. The most straight forward way I can think of to accomplish that would be to minimize the AP the items gives and focus on attack speed instead. So something like-

item 3136 item 1043 item 3101

So you get attack speed, CDR, some OnHit damage, Eyes of Pain, and some amount of magic damage vamp. I know it would be a godsend for Azir. And it might finally encourage Riot to dumpster Kayle until they rework her. So a win-win, really.

Gunblade vamps off all damage types, including True Damage. The proposed item would heal only off Magic Damage.

I'm aware. I was around when it used to have an AP/Spellvamp aura and resulted in the double AP WotA meta.

Then you should know why it got dumpstered, and were probably not going to see it's return.

Still, Why wouldn't you go with gunblade. It's even cheaper than Death's dance. And having the omni damage instead of just magic damage isn't a bad thing. The only real drawback is that you don't get any magic damage sustain untill after the gunblade is complete.

Because of Vladimir, mostly. Making an attack speed heavy item prevents it from being attractive on the old manaless abusers of Spellvamp.

Mostly because there needs to be a third AP/IAS item to round out that trend. We've got Nashor's and Rageblade already, a third item added to the mix would finish the build. So you've got your core item item 3115 your force-multiplier item 3124 and then you just need a sustain item. The last two slots could be filled with more sustain from Gunblade, burst from Lichbane, %pen from Voidstaff, or whatever utility/defense options suit your needs.
