Wait why does Maw still exist?

They are two items that offer completely different things.
Maw gives a lot of raw stats even when not proc'd,
Sterak's needs to be proc'd to give you everything.
Sterak's only gives base AD so some abilities won't scale with it at all.
Maw has MR, Sterak's has health.
Maw has Armor Pen, Sterak's doesn't.
The only thing remotely similar is that they give shields and even their shields are different.
- doesn't trigger a shield unless bursted.
- shield strength depends on max hp instead of a set amount, making it less useful on squishies.
- doesn't provide as much ad unless you stack up enough ad items
- provides hp instead of defensive stat
- Most important of all, they're not the same item and do not affect each other. There's no rule saying you can only get either of those 2, and very often I grab both of them.
Why not buy both when faced with high mixed burst, or buy the one that best fits the enemy comp?
