Single Target, DoT or AOE?

Hi guys,

So quick question, over the duration of the effect, on a single enemy, which of these 3 do we think will do the most damage?

1 Single Target 2 DoT 3 AOE

Exclude ULTS for the sake of fairness.

Edit: ok so after seeing a few standard answers I figured itd be worth jumping in with a quick addition. Compare the damage of actual DoTs to AOE burst spells. You'll find most of the AOE come out on top. The "standard" answer of "single target DoT" no longer holds true.

Depends on the numbers, simple. [sg-ezreal]

i have no idea what you mean

single target hits only one target dot it damage over time like malza's e aoe is area of effect like galio's r,w and cho gath's q

there is also a aoe dot spells like anivia's ult , galio's q and much more

damage-wise, it depends on who you are comparing. so i didn't get the question

Your question is inherently flawed. It's not, "which do you think will?" because ability damage is specifically catered to the type of ability.

Single target damage is intended to be the highest because it only applies to one enemy. Area of Effect damage is intended to do less damage to a single target because it deals its entire damage to multiple targets.

Damage over Time, accordingly, deals either more or less depending on whether it is single target or AoE (it's incorrect to categorize it separately since it must fall under one of those categories). In both cases it should deal more damage than single-instance damage, but as a drawback it gives the enemy time for healing or shielding.

Wow, all really good points! The question was deliberately flawed so as not to alter the various options and to see where people assigned each ability type. Please continue though, So far its really intriguing! =)

OK so the REASON for this post (and will be added shortly) was that the standard answers are always says "sustained damage does the most because of healing etc" and "single target does more than AOE" but if you look at the numbers actually AOE burst does the same if not more even to a single target. Compare something like Malefic Visions to any frontloaded aoe ability and you can see this. Even a DoT AOE like Cassios Q does less actual damage then say a Vel'Koz Q.

Have a look and then reconsider =)
