Trying to become God Top Laner. Tips?

So lately I've been wanting to get better during landing phase. Is there any tips anyone can give me and becoming a better top laner? Maybe also a few champions like example. If someone picks a tank top like garen who can i choose or if someone chooses a champion like illoi who's a good choice. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Top lane plays very differently at different levels, mainly due to the awareness of your junglers. For example, at low Elo, a strong early jungler might see you playing riven against a weak matchup and camp the shit out of you, leaving you underleveled and useless for most of the game, and your jungler will say "great, feeder riven, l2play scrub, afk." At a high Elo, your jungler would take dragons, pressure the rest of the map, and wreak general havoc much to the advantage of your team--and the other jungler would know this and not even camp you that hard in the first place. So, at a higher Elo, you might have to worry about the occasional gank depending on where you are in your lane, but not a full-blown camp.

Likewise, at high levels it's unlikely that you're going to absolutely pulverize your matchup. You'll both have played it before, you both know roughly what to expect, and you can build a CS lead and have better map presence but that's about it. At low levels, however, sometimes your opponent will be ignorant or become massively tilted and just do the same stupid things over and over again. If you don't punish his mistakes consistently and hard, you're missing opportunities to win games.

Anywho, my advice:

  • Learn a lot of matchups for a few champions and stick to those champions
  • Learn how to control the position of the wave in your lane. If you can freeze well and call your jungler's attention to it, it's a big advantage. Likewise if you know how to break a freeze safely, you'll avoid the same situation in reverse.
  • Learn how to recognize and punish mistakes. This one is tough because you won't see a lot of those mistakes on streams unless someone is doing an unranked-to-master marathon or something
  • Learn when it's time to leave lane. If the enemy fiora can kill you under turret every time her ult is up, don't stay there. Go somewhere else. If you've stomped your lane and you're knocking on the t2 but the enemy t1 mid is still standing, you're going to get 2-3 man ganked and die. Go somewhere else.
