Only dedicated supports are picking support
I find this to be intriguing as people from other roles are not as dedicated.
Edit: This is not meant to be a "I play this and went from bronze 5 to gold 4 in 2 weeks" kind of thread. So please dont.

I totally agree with you and I find it baffling. Support is arguably the funnest role in the game. You don't have to worry about CSing, you get to harass the enemy, you save your teammates, you lock down carries, you get to roam, etc. It's a blast to play support if you are doing it right.

It has it's own special positive feedback loop. People who are not support mains but like to support sometimes, put it as secondary but get it 90% of the time due to shortage of support players. After a while they get sick of that and don't put support secondary, expanding the shortage of support players. Eventually the patented dynaboost system has successfully weeded out the 'occasional supports' leaving 2 groups, 1) dedicated supports and 2) everyone else. http://i.imgur.com/Z9kcfgI.png[/img]
ya I genuinely think that every game people should get points like how aram used to do and the more needed a role is the more points you get for playing that role and when you get 100 points you can enter a Que with 100% chance of getting the role you want. So that a support can play 2-3 games and get 100 points where if your say mid you would have to play 10 games. This would give more incentive to play the lesser played roles and would also give people a break from playing these roles 20 times in a row even if it's only on secondary.
and if they have a problem of say to many people picking mid with there points they can just make it where the system requires more points to be accumulated to play mid then say jungler or support.
I totally agree with you, it's just that support is a fun role and more people should do it. If nothing else for the non-existent Q times.
Its the fact that support has the least amount of influence over the game. If the team is dumpster then there isn't much a support can do to snowball the team. sure you can peel all you want, ward and play to the best of your ability, but a lot of the time you don't have the choice of where the damage is going in teamfights. In other words you can't make your teammates do damage to the right people, and you can only do so much to protect your team. Its the position that's most reliant on your teamates. Being reliant on your teammates is very bad unless you bring a friend into the ranked game with you. Unless you play support zyra of course, then you can compensate for a few potatoes on your team lol.
A few supports can compensate for bad players. In addition to Zyra, Morgana I would put up there.
Blitzcrank also invites your team to focus on a single enemy, as long as you can grab the right person.
I support the Morgana pick fully. Her and Zilean.

Also

. I'm mentioning these champs and not the usual supports because these are mage supports that actually work quite well, because of the added burst damage to lanes that are not usually used to it and they start to snowball and transform into secondary mages. Tahm is here because everyone forgot how he is too tanky for his own good and that he can completely negate any sort of a focused effort onto someone on your team.
I also support the Morgana pick.
I only decided to main support because when i used to main adc my support 99% of the time didn't get their primary role and therefore didn't know how to support (the game would proceed with no vision and my support having all the kills T.T). I basically told myself ,"If you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself." Support is such a great role cause i live for the moments when your teammate shouts, "KARMA HAVE MY CHILDREN", because you saved them last second with a shield. It's such a stress free and rewarding role <3.
Lol, I play support only because of Zyra. I played her a lot last season, this season I don't have to rely on my team to carry their weight at all, I can just remove like 2 people from the teamfight before it even starts. TBH, I don't even buy sightstone. If you rush
as your first 3 items, and you put 20 magic pen on your runes, you literally delete anybody. Its the new youmus black cleaver lucain except with zyra. TBH the yellow trinket suits all of my needs anyway. If I go sightstone with red trinket I never have wards when I need to ward baron or something. With yellow the wards recharge so I'm almost never out of wards when I need them.
I had almost the same problem. I mained jg/mid and my adc would feed their ass off in lane and they wouldn't know how to position in fights. Now i go jg/supp because ADC is my least favorite role but being the support is fun and I can get my ADC fed.
Even after Riot "fixed" it to give your primary role more often:
jungle/mid > jungle 85% of the time
jungle/support > jungle 50% of the time
No thanks, I will jungle/mid.
I went from 1/70 getting mid to about 2/5 getting mid when I queue up as Mid/Support. I really like what they did with that.

Yes but it should be 4/5 getting mid when you queue as mid/support.
Just like it would be if you had queued as mid/jungle, mid/top, or mid/adc instead. Why STILL shaft "support as a secondary role" players after supposedly "fixing" the system?
If jungle/mid gives me jungle 85% of the time, jungle/support should also give me jungle 85% of the time.
Well, I guess we do have different ideas on what fix means. But remember, every team needs a support. Support is the least popular role in league. What I think Riot needs to do is add more supports who can directly influence the game, rather than supports who have to hope that their team does their job. You can peel, set up teamfights and protect your team all you want. The rest of your team has to do their part in order to win games. And relying on randoms in your ranked games is a huge mistake.
Thats why I play so much Zyra :3 I can compensate for the vegetables.

It's least popular role because no one is putting it as their secondary. Because it unfairly throws them into the role too often if they do.
I was jungle/support last season. I'm jungle/mid this season. Why? Dynamic queue/new champion select. Absolutely no other reason.
Well, people not putting support as their secondary is the reason people are being unfairly put into it lol.

And that was supposedly "fixed" - the system is supposed to prioritize primary roles now.
Except it doesn't. It still fucks you over if you put support as your secondary role.
If it can find me jungle games 85% of the time, it shouldn't matter what my secondary role is - I should still get jungle games 85% of the time.
It shouldn't just go "oh, you're a support secondary? Sorry, fuck you, we're only giving you jungle 50% of the time now, because we need more supports."
That's a broken system. And that's a system where people won't pick support at all.

If there were more supports, yea, that'd happen. If there isn't? Stop complaining. You can't fault the system for not giving you what isn't there.

If I queue as jungle/mid and it can find me jungle games 85% of the time, then it sure as fuck should be able to find me jungle games 85% of the time when I queue as jungle/support. It shouldn't just go "Oh you picked support? We need more of those, so we're not actually going to prioritize your primary role now, sorry!"
That's a broken system. Especially after they "fixed" it to prioritize primary roles more often.
from 1/70 to 2/5
how did you feed so badly in your main role? kappa
Results may be skewed, I logged into the Korean server to get these statistics.
This is why people are so vehemently opposed to the auto fill feature - none of them play or want to play support. It's their own problem, because it's why they have massive queue times, yet no one is willing to compromise.
I'm not a dedicated support by any means. But, I still enjoy playing the traditional support champs every now and then. I actually can't stand the role half the time, but I have rank 5 on Bard, Soraka, Alistair and rank 6 on Blitz and Tahm, as well as many others.
I'm just fill main. I enjoy all roles.
I mean, if you call for your main role, you will get it almost all the time. So in the end, why not "abuse" this privilege and always get what you want?
:^)
i mean as a support main i'm not complaining about getting my role almost 100% of the time :) rarnk 6 braum rank 7 sona and rank 5 nami and thresh but i can jungle and adc and kinda mid/top
If you have just mained support all the time you probably are less experienced at getting CS and knowing the windows of attack for solo laners. Support is generally the easiest position to play so it is harder to jump to other spots.
Support it not the easiest to play if you're doing it correctly. It's literally babysitting your team. You have to manage your roam time so you dont fall behind in XP. You have to make sure your ADC can get kills that you set up and doesnt die trying to get them. You have to ward and counter ward. Support is far from easy. Jungle is easier because you don't have to worry about nearly as much.
It is great to have a skilled support and they can carry your team to victory with smart play. However, if you had to hide the worst person on your team at a certain position, most people would just play a passive support like Janna and let them hide there as to not negatively affect the game too much. AFK jungling isn't difficult either, I agree.
It's exactly why we should never have had dynamic queue.
I've seen a plethora of "support mains" who played support like 40%-50% of the time, and other roles for the rest, turn in to people that never play support. Even to the extent that the challenger/master level ones now DODGE when they get auto-filled support even though that was their main prior to dynamic queue.
I mean, seriously, you know the idea is broken when you take people who mained the least popular role, and make them hate it so much that they dodge the game when they're assigned that role through auto-fill.
We said off of the start that anyone who played support but wasn't a "support-only" player would learn to hate the role and stop queuing for it. That's really been the case. If you wanted mid 60% and support 40%, you either queued mid-supp and got mid 5% and support 95%, or you queued mid with top/jg and got mid 60% and top/jg 40%. The latter sounds much more appealing to people in that case, and so you just lost 40% of a support player. We couldn't afford to lose all of those support players.
Further, making us more likely to get our primary role... maybe that would have helped at the start because these support players wouldn't have left their role, but it's too late now and only makes it even worse. I actually enjoyed playing multiple roles. I didn't even mind getting support 5%-10% of the time. Dynamic queue came and I reduced myself to 2 roles to be efficient. Now I seem to get whichever one I put as my primary 90% of the time - so it only makes sense to really practice one role only. That's not cool - it's a great way to get people to be bored of your game. Why should the most efficient way to play be to be a OTP?
Riot really NEEDS to implement two things:
In both cases, the incentive should be real. I'm talking more IP in normals and more LP in ranked. If I'm able to play at X level in 3 roles, whereas another player is only at that level in 1 role, I'm the better player and should rank up faster, so there really should be no issue with the extra LP gains.
As a support main, I love how the new Champ Select gives me my role all the time. It makes support the easiest role to practice in ranked when I can literally play it every game with low queue times.
Yeah, I play jungle/supp. I normally get 30% jg which isnt too bad since I enjoy support. And queue times are like 30 seconds. When I played jg/mid, they were like 8 mins.
I find support fun, but it really depends on who is my ADC. Can't support randoms in low elo, it's painful.
If I'm supporting a half-decent adc, then I find the role enjoyable.
I primarily play support, though I seem to suck at it. I can mid if needed. I can adc if needed. I totally blow at jungle and I am pretty bad at top lane.
I am a pretty good support (90% of the people I play with say so because they go for the kills I set up). I can mid if needed and jungle if needed. I don't want to ever step into top lane (because every thing that rito doesnt wanna balance gets shoved there) and I am an appauling ADC.
I am tilted because when I setup a kill, me and my adc seem to get them down to a sliver of health and the kill just doesn't come. It seems to happen over and over again. I don't take the kill because I want my adc to get fed. I am having and issue with being able to tell when I should just take the kill and leave it for the adc.
Generally, if they get low, i use one auto attack just in case. Worst case I flash (insert ability) to secure the kill and prevent XP gain.
I just hate it when the ADC acts like a snail with their target prioritization. It's worse than a minion sometimes.
Or I don't hold back and get the kill and then the adc rages. Just kill the damn thing!!!
Generally if the ADC rages at me, I just reply with "What? You weren't eating that" then continue.
eh its because they find support generally a boring role the whole support role imo needs to be somewhat reworked again....while they also introduce more support items like crucible and all of that
Pretty sure It's because support secondary means you're support 95% of the time.
A lot of players do like to occasionally support. but most of those players got really irritated they were stuck supporting the vast majority of the time.
They fixed that on either the PBE or last patch. People put up posts about being able to que secondary support and only get it about 20% of the time.
Well, taking on the support role is fun and challenging. Although the feeling of helplessness surfaces when the team is feeding the enemy champions.
Main champions I play, on my other account, no this one, are two support/mage champions and a mage/support champion. So that is 3 slots out of the 8 champions slots on the client profile. That leaves me 5 champions slots remaining for jungle/mid/top lanes.
Players from the other roles, in my opinion, likes to see that KDA stat on their summoner profile.
the most helpless feeling I get when playing support is that most adc's play with people who are forced to support and are bad at support so they expect you to be bad and don't know how to capitalize on good plays or exert lane pressure because there supports almost never exert lane pressure and thus can almost never make plays that can lead to kills unless they play blitzcrank or thresh and get lucky hooks.
Hi Everyone,
I have been playing this game for 3 years, and I have mostly played support, and I enjoy playing the support role the most out of all the positions. In saying that, it has made it extremely difficult to progress. (As other people have said, the role does require other players on your team to be at least half decent in the other roles).
As I am bronze I have been in games where the adc cannot even cs (and more than once I have topped the cs scores as support in a game due to this), and I have found that with some champions
,
,
for instance you can stay in the game and sometimes even win.
However if you are
,
for isntance, (with no damage and very little wave clear) it is impossible to compete.
I have just recently started learning
, and after about 10 practice games went into ranked only for the team to complain about picking me wanting to pick her.
I think at lower levels at least you need to have a backup strategy. So these days i always try to pick a support that could fill another role. just in case.
This is true. I personally like
for support, since she can make people stop moving with her q, w, or r, and even a doofusy adc can realize that now would be a good time to hit them a little bit
I'm still waiting for the ADCs to learn I need to roam as Bard...as well as picking up my shrines when they are getting low..
I always let my bards roam, but I just have issues when they don't leave shrines behind (honestly, how hard is it to drop a couple shrines, especially when your chimes fill up your mana), or when they roam, come die, and roam again. The second one isnt their fault, but its still irritating.
I can understand that too...
When I play Bard, I always start with my Shrines and will lay 1 near jg (if they start krug/red) and the rest by tower for when my adc needs a pick me up...
If I'm about to roam for chimes, I make sure there are 3 shrines by the tower and a ward in river before I go off to get my bells and come back in time to journey into a hopeful double stun XD
Its the snowball effect of letting us choose our roles before we queue and the fact that support's role in the game is less impact.
Before the support mains jump me, let me be clear. A good support is as much godly as a good jungle and a good mid, and can carry just the same by literally spoon feeding their teammates kills. When I say less impact I mean that there is less immediate response to a good support.
Case and point: Any other role that's doing well is getting kills, cs, and objectives with visible consequences like more items, more damage, and more lane pressure. Meanwhile a good support is getting none of those things. They just make it easier for their teammates to do these things. The only visual indications of a good support is map awareness and ward placement. Things that are both immensely important, but not immediately so.
Its kinda the reason supports like thresh and blitz are popular since they have the most immediate indications of skill and thus feel much more impact compared to the likes of say janna and soraka which are equally useful, but no where near as flashy or a visual indication of skill.
To put it bluntly, support is a boring role to a majority of the community.
