Let's talk about Magic Resist
As a tank enthusiast, I have been frustrated with the stare of Magic Resist on the rift recently.
So lets look at our MR options:
is my go to tanky MR item. It is very good
is another good option, but only on sustain heavy/reliant champions. Bascially, on those it works with, it is a must have, on those it doesn't, its nearly useless
/
are only viable options if you have heavy mana problems. And they are more likely bought for the mana font passive
, another solid option, but the MR is kinda low, and it needs to be paired with another MR item unless you are up agaisnt a magic damage low team. and if so, the issues with MR item choices don't matter anyway
: ADC item only, and bought more for the active than the MR.
: a good option only against burst magic damage, and only on those who benefit sufficiently from attackspeed, lifesteal, and spellvamp all at once.
Notice im leaving a decent amount of MR granting items off of this list. These are merely the items that grant a large quantitiy of MR, and I was stretching it on a few of those. Conversely, every item below grants a butt-tonne of armor...
Compare this to Armor items:
: good against ADCs and a massive boost to effective health. comparable strength to B-viel, the ONE SOLID MR ITEM!
: good for direct and follow-up initators, or conversly for those who struggle to get into postion during teamfights. Effective tankiness again on par with B-veil
: good for mage tanks, with a solid amount of CDR and mana. Not quite the amount of effective health as above options, but stil helps a ton agaisnt AS reliant damage sources. Similar to Spirit visage, in that it works wonders on some, and is nearly useless on others. But again, Spirit visage is one of the best MR options
: see above points. It is niche, much like Spirit visage, and very good on those who can utilize it. But again, a 'meh' armor item comparable to one of the top MR items
: a massive boost to effective HP and a decent damage boost. Good for those not running cinderhulk.
: Not as good in terms of effective HP compared to some others, but can occupy an offensive item slot on tanks, especially when up against a fed ADC
: you're not picking this up for the armor.
So, in terms of quality, armor items take the cake. They provide massive amounts of HP AND Armor. In terms of quantity, armor wins again, with many more options and more importantly enemy specific options.
The reason I think this is true is due to the nature of the armor items: most grant large quantities of health in addition to armor. Because of this, a tank building even 2 armor items is gaining so much HP that mages have no chance to burst them. Therefore the small amount of MR provided by things like Merc treads goes a long way. This is a good thing.
My issue is that I don't have very many options in terms of my dedicated MR item slot. B-Veil is pretty much the only MR tank item I can get.
Its really dumb.
