Who would you say is a good champion for teaching basic skills?

And I don't just mean a simple champion. Warwick for example is a really simple champion, but other than maybe drilling you on who to or who not to target in a fight (something all champions naturally should be doing anyway), he doesn't really teach you any significant skills that you can build a foundation out of. On the other hand, Ashe too is a really simple champion, but her slows on attack and low base movement speed demands that if you want to get good at Ashe, you need to get good at kiting, a fantastic foundational skill for virtually every ranged champion. Her E and ultimate respectively emphasize non combat and combat based utility, not to mention it gets people to actually look at the map and be aware of it. She's a simple champ that drills good foundational skills that a player can carry elsewhere.

What champions do you think are good at teaching the basics of the game and providing a foundation of skills that you can carry over to other champions?

Lux gives pretty much everything but tank help.

You have to learn to work around long CDs (ult not withstanding). Skillshots. No mobility. Somewhat gated early mana. The risk/reward balance between just staying at range, or making use of her passive. You have to learn to last hit, because you can't one shot waves during the early game. Her ult is another thing that both requires you to both pay attention to the map, and incentivizes roaming.
Her shield and ability to provide vision should help with the concept of helping allies, not just yourself.

She is however a fairly basic champion, and not hard to understand as a concept.

Malphite or Amumu might be a good tank archetypes.

pick something with skill shots and multiple moving parts for instance Ahri, Zed, Elise, or Lucian.

Annie's a simple champion and her Q is good to teaching you last hitting

Ezreal is the best champion to learn on. He's got skillshots that are pretty easy to land and not super punishing if you don't hit every single one, free escapes, multiple build paths depending on where you wanna go and what the enemy team has, and is an all around great beginner champion.

I've played probably a couple hundred games of Ez myself, and I must say that I generally endorse this opinion. Not only is he decently easy to pick up and do well with, he is capable of doing a lot more when you're competent with him and it's particularly easy to tell the difference between a mediocre one and an ez--perienced Ezreal ;)

  • Jhin: His 4 shot kit makes last hitting minions very important and even though he can spam abilities like his q, you learn mana management since you run out fast if you use too much. Downside is that his damage is unrealistic for many other champions.
  • Vayne: kiting. kiting. and more kiting. (ashe and kalista also are good for this)
  • Garen: He teaches the fundamentals of knowing your limits. His passive restores health so if you go in too deep and get chunked in lane, just back off, let yourself regen, then try again.
  • Shen and Soraka: Since their ults are champ reliant you tend to get into the habit of knowing your teammates very well and checking the map often becomes second nature.
  • LeBlanc or Zed: combos are key to these champs, as well as knowing when and which place to be in at the right time.
  • Leona: for tanky support
  • Thresh: utility kit based champion who has a hook, but is not too punishing if you wiff it and is fairly easy to learn.

It appears someone down voted everyone. I ran through with upvotes, though I am sad to see no one coming out with it.

Pantheon is great for teaching CSing.

Depends on what kind of skills you're looking to teach. I agree with the Lux suggestion for dealing with skillshots, and mana gating, but I think Ezreal is better in that regard since his Q is on such a low cooldown and is fairly un-punishing to miss.

I'd also suggest Caitlyn for last-hitting and autoattack mechanics, since that's basically all she does.

For something more advanced, like map awareness, try Soraka or Karthus. They're both fairly simple champions, but an inability to pay attention to other lanes will negate a lot of the impact of their ults.
