Smite on Krugs - BUG?

So when I've been jungling and tried to smite Krugs (after their initial breakup), is there a reason why smite doesn't work on them? I've tried it multiple times and it never goes through. Is this a bug or is this intentional?

Well,only the big krug is a 'large monster' and only large/epic monsters can be smited,its intentional

Smite only works on large/epic monsters and not small ones, and I'm pretty sure only the big krug pre-break counts as a large monster
