Constructive help with Riven!

I just wanted to know if there were some people who were good at riven that could help me with a few things I am struggling with.

1. Engaging early game

  • I have an issue with trading early game. I find myself, usually being picked into, and getting easily poked out even if I am being aggressive. I have her combo's down alright, but when I finish using my Q and W and I have my E off cd after using it to engage I still cant get away. Usually this is with people like Illaoi and Jax.

2. Defensive items

  • I hear that Black Cleaver is pretty important and ravenous is as well, but what items could you build to say shut out a Jax? Being able to hit someone 2-3 times and kill them with an empowered basic attack is retarded. In most cases is it simply avoiding and baiting out those abilities with you mobility? If so then what happens when everything is down? At what item should you start to feel safe?

3. Late game

  • Is Riven a splitpusher? I was watching something where someone said riven is for split pushing, but it seem like once you get good items, even if your not ahead per say, that you are really good in team fights. Even then I have the problem of just getting absolutely obliterated by whatever dps they have.

On a side note, I normally play people who are very safe like Lux and Ahri.

I am about the worst Riven player in existence but I do know of a group that might be able to help. Check out /r/RivenMains for some tips if you don't find what you are looking for here.

Best of luck!

If I'm honest, you can get information on what combos to use in what situations, but it's the actual act of using them that you have to get from just playing a lot of games. Eventually you'll know what spells to use when, and have innate knowledge of her cool downs to play around. Just play her a lot.

Depending on the matchup, you need to change your keystone masteries.

Fervor is for when you can trade hard with the opponent and is able to negate their damage

TLD is when you cannot trade for a long time and have to rely on short bursts of damage, or you can easily burst down the enemy.

Storm raider has a similar usage to TLD in the sense you can only trade in a short time, but I feel storm raider will be useful if you need to run away as soon as possible after trading.

Courage is when you're in a really bad matchup and is forced to play passive, depending on how hard to lane is, you might even need to buy doran's shield and blade.
