No, no one expects you to have Zhonya's or QSS in the laning phase. You can purchase these items at almost any point in the game and make it so that Deathmark is a worse version of Master Yi's Alpha Strike.

Deathmark is also his only point and click ability. Everything else is either a skillshot or point blank AoE.

Riven isn't countered particularly hard by either of those items.

Most people complain about Vayne on this part of the boards. It's hard to believe people complain about Zed so much with his high skillcap and being one of the only champions in the game who can have their ult countered by a single item.

The sad truth... I admit as Zed main myself, he does have a few things that they could work on but still the complaints never stop... I see at least 3 a week when I go to check the boards and I don't check them as often as I used to.

I'll admit I'm normally on the AP side of things, but you can most certainly QSS a Deathmark. According to the wiki, you have to wait until Zed re-appears to remove it, which might be what you're doing wrong.
