Honestly people who complain about havent even tried the role or tried it once and said boring. If you really want to play the role you should try one from each catagory

Tanky aggressive cc get in the enemys face and cc them. you want to engage and peel and make the enemy team hate you.(my personal favorite type)ex.Blitzcrank Braum Nautilus

Burst mages mid laners sent bot. build a sightstone and frost queens and ALL THE AP YOU CAN BUY. usually has some kind of cc to justify there supp role. exLux Annie Brand

Ultility mages mages with some kinda shield or healing or unusual mechanic to help out the team exTaric Soraka Sona ]

The real classifications are:

Utility Peel/CC Poke

All supports and any non-support taken bot lane qualify into these categories. This is important because your classifications don't take into account what the champs actually do. Lux is not taken bot lane for her burst - she's taken bot because she has snares and a big slow field, coupled with good poke. The same goes for Morgana, Annie, and Brand, who are taken bot due to their ability to CC and poke. Sona is also interesting in that she has aspects of poke, utility, and CC in her kit, making her a bit of a generalist. Using my categories, you can easily apply this to other laners if you want to try them support. Ashe can qualify as utility/CC; Teemo can be pure utility; Oriana also has tons of utility and minor CC in her kit. If any champ can properly utilize any of these categories, chances are you can make them work support - after all, that's why Blitz, Leona, Annie, Nautilus, Brand, and Vel'koz have been successful in the support role.

I kinda feel like this is a pretty good way to summarize Support roles, and you can probably apply a lot of what's said that I'm replying to to this.

Defensive

  • Vanguards (Champions who soak up damage for teammates, like Braum)
  • Engagers (Champions who dive in and also kind of fall into the Disruptor subclass, like Leona)
  • Disruptors (Champions who play around with CC and hamper enemies, like Thresh)

Offensive

  • Pokers (Champions with general poke spells, often falls into the other two categories, like Bard)
  • Burst-Mages (Champions who do large amounts of damage, dissuading the enemy from engaging or generally just playing carry, like Vel'Koz)
  • Burn-Mages (Champions who do DoT damage as their primary source, usually to weaken enemies or secure kills, like Brand)

Utility

  • Healers (Champions who specialize in healing allies, like Soraka)
  • Controllers (Champions who, at a range, excel in applying CC, like Janna)
  • Supplements (Champions who dip into multiple variations of utility, like Sona)

Although this is still a sort of broad way to look at them, but it does give a good outline for Supports. I hope that Oleandervine is okay with this being an attached response to their reply in particular. (I'm also hoping that this does well to reinforce their point, too.)

No love for Thresh or Zyra ? No love for the (arguably) easiest support to play, which is faceroll Morgana ?
