Today I rage quit for the first time in three years of playing this game.
I'll start by saying that I'm quite your average league player. I never care about ranked except to get to gold for the end of season rewards, so I mostly play normals with a friend. I have average mechanics, CS, and probably medicore decision-making skills. I enjoy playing off meta picks like top lane ADC's and I main Teemo. I have spent approx. 400 Euros on the game.
League's biggest demographic consists of people like me. We are not great at the game, we just wanna have some damn fun. But how could you have fun with:
-
Towers melting after one back/death: Towers were already in a pathetic state and they decided to nerf them some more because "We want to give defenders something to feel good about when they do hold off a push on their base, while also giving sieging teams meaningful milestones other than just 'tower destroyed.'" This shift in focus takes the gameplay from being player-based to team-based, and I do realize that League is ultimately a team game but in solo queue or normals we are not 5-man coordinated SKT gods, hell most players don't even pay attention to pings unless you ping straight on them.
-
Laning phase is too short: It seems to me that they are trying to split the game into three sections, 1st 10 mins is the early/laning phase, 2nd 10 mins is mid/skirmishes phase, and everything after that is team-fights and late game. This kind of gameplay simply doesn't suit most people, especially with the vast differences between all of the champions, combs, and players. You have to make the game more dynamic to see the best of every player, not just the best player of each team or the best team of each game.
-
Jungle and bot lane have too much impact: Bot lane lost their lane? tough luck trying to win back the match. The enemy jungler ganked and you died because of your ward had just expired and it's still on cooldown so you didn't get the chance to ward the bushes? There goes half the towers HP. Oh and be prepared for another gank as soon as you return to lane and losing your tower. Fuck you. Oh btw their jungler 1 manned the herald. Guess there goes top inhib.
-
HP, Armor, and Magic resistance are either useless or OP: Try playing in a team without % health damage or true damage against some tanks and enjoy that -18LP. OR play a tank against any champion post-S6 and enjoy experiencing league in black and white.
-
Everything must be UNIQUE: Sigh this is like trying to convince a 13 year old self proclaimed "meme-lord" that random =/= funny. Just because something is unique it doesn't mean that it's fun to play against.
-
Rito's communication problem: Look man, League's community is passionate about this game. We love this game. Yeah the balance is bad, Riot's decision-making is questionable, disregard to players' requests, and overall degradation in game quality, but we love the game. Now you only see rioters commenting on Art threads and that's about it. I understand how negative feedback hurts one's feelings, boy do I know that, and many players are simply hard to communicate with, but my dudes, and dudettes, you don't even seem to listen. We complain and complain about things for months and then one day you'll be like "Oh, we think Ardent censer is unhealthy in the game."
-
Fuck Yasuo: There's nothing wrong with this champ I just hate him lol.
Now with all that out of the way, and if you have continued reading until now, i would like to shed some light on why bad ideas seem to get into the game and no one understands how they were allowed to get there: Riot's internal work culture.
You see Riot is one of the places that I wanted to work at, being a computer engineering major and all, so I decided to look into the working environment. If you check Employee reviews on Glassdoor You'll see that most of the negative complaints have some things in common: incompetent management, Rito going more and more corporate and less player oriented, problems with internal communication, incompetent management, focus on meaningless details rather on big picture changes, incompetent management.
So you can't assume that the game will get any better unless Riot itself gets better. If Riot continues in going in this direction of being a money focused corporation instead of player focused one, they will, ultimately, kill themselves. Players will spend money on this game IF it's fun. But in this current state it's not fun at all.
And I guess that's why I rage quit today.
