What is wrong with surrendering?

I just had a bad game where myself (Top) and bot lane weren't preforming well at all, and my jungler and midlaner wouldn't surrender? I understand instances where surrendering isn't a good option (having late game carries, down by few kills, having a decent split-pusher.. etc) but we were down by 20-something kills, lost most of the lane turrets and no proper late game champs. Why waste everyone's time and get them to tilt if you're just going to lose anyway? Why isn't surrendering encouraged when you're obviously not going to win?

Well not everyone's French.

In all seriousness though, some people would rather take the <1% chance of winning than just give up.

Usually out of spite. I noticed that laners will feed and go 0/8 and then call for surrender. I hit no and wont surrender just because you wasted my time by feeding horribly completely losing us the game and then you want to quit. Why shouldn't I waste your time? That's the basic mentality of it I believe. I notice it a lot too.

If it is ranked, I'm not going to surrender. I've already invested 20 minutes (plus queue and champion select) into this game, so I'm just going to play it out.

No point accepting a guaranteed lose when there is the possibility we can come back.

If it is a normal game, I'm far more open to surrendering if the game is unenjoyable (i.e. teammates trolling/raging, enemy team has won and just has to close the game out, etc).

You wanna know why I really surrender?

Actually, there's 2 reasons. My team has shown that they don't have the skills to turn the game around (at least in the first 20 minutes I've seen them). This is seriously important and I think people don't see this. If my team just sits there whilst I'm trying to force them to compete for vision, advantageous skirmishes and objectives, I'm going to lose hope very fast. Overly passive play doesn't win games, and if you're behind, it only slows down the snowball, it doesn't actually stop it.

The second reason is because I'd rather go into a new game, and learn how to stop a Katarina from going 15/0 when she's 2/0 rather than trying to learn how to shutdown a 15/0 Katarina in the first place.

Basically, I'd rather use the time (5-15 extra mins) in a new game learning how to snowball rather than trying to play against an opponent I have a 5% chance of beating.

Edit: Honorable mention is because higher elo players close out games MUCH cleaner than low elo players do. Bronze to Gold players are quite lazy with their roaming, vision and objective control, Plat players are too arrogant but get much better in this aspect. But once you hit Diamond, you're gonna be dragging out a lot of lost games.

The only problem is that I quit 2 seasons ago so I'm still learning the ropes again.

I myself never surrender due to my unreasonable stubbornness. I'm very uncomfortable with the notion of quitting. Not always logical, as in the case you outlined above, but the idea of walking out before a final result is reached is alien to me.

I will never forget.... A game I played over 2 years ago... a stomp by all accounts, and an adc who never connected even 40 mins in.

We were down ALL of the objectives, 40+ deaths, and Lord only knows how much gold...

However... A duo kept blocking the ff vote and spamming "GOKU SAID NEVER SURRENDER" in chat...

These are the "NEVER SURRENDER!!!!" kids who have some sort of misplaced honor and morality tied to their "attendance"...

It also never cesses to amaze me how often they will type something like "It's just a game! LOL!!!!", and then turn around and beg the enemy team to report you for giving up 5 mins later.... Apparently it's THIER game to play how they want and NO ONE else is allowed to have any say.... Toxicity at it's finest...

I don't like surrendering because it makes it harder to gain experience in handling late-game tactics and strategies (dragon, Baron, or knock down a couple inhibs?).

Partholonian7/9/2017, 12:54:00 PM4 votes

Has it not occurred to you that people can honestly disagree about whether there is a chance for a comeback? One or two players having a bad game isn't actually game over.

Sure, a pro team that is up 20 kills is not going to throw (if another pro team would ever have that many deaths in the first place). My opponents are not pros and can totally still throw that (even without a DC). Getting a pick on the one fed guy can turn around a lot of things.

Anyway, some people enjoy the game even when they're losing, so they're not wasting time by playing it out.

P.S. Refusing to surrender can never get someone to tilt; if they proposed a surrender (let alone more than once) they are already tilted.

I got no problem with surrendering. My problem is with the people that die once and spam gg game over in the chat 15 times

You literally signed up to play a video game for X amount of time where it's explicit that you, yourself, may not be able to leave when you want to.

I'm going to reiterate that. You SIGNED UP to possibly have to play a game that you might regret queueing up for in the end. Such is the nature of competitive multiplayer games. You DON'T get to decide when the game ends, and by spamming surrender votes like a child instead of committing when OTHER people have feelings and want to play, you exacerbate an already bad situation. YOU might not enjoy trying to win a losing game, but there ARE people that like it.

You are TOTALLY free to afk, btw. You might get slapped with a penalty, sure, but you shouldn't be giving up on enough games to get a real punishment (unless you're a real fun-hating downer). Besides, if you give up that much, you might as well not even play this game in general, so afking won't matter to you.

I had a losing jungler + mid + adc in my last game, they also got my enemy fed so it turned into a losing top lane for a while. ADC and jg tried to surrender, I said no with the mid and supp.

We three-manned it from then on out, pushing towers, teamfights, everything we could to make things go OUR way. Went from being down 25 kills to taking over the game. Down by six turrets to crushing the enemy's nexus because we started coordinating. I even got our 1/15 Twitch to 14/15 by the end.

Things can turn around.

Mostly cause ppl are a**holes.

From what i've seen in the last 2 weeks its mostly cause they want to make you sit through a long bad game. Leaving isnt an Option as the Leaver Buster would trigger the Honor de-rank and you can say "byebye" to any chest or key fragments.

Im Glad that in somewhat around 2 weeks Diablo 3 Season 11 starts

Everyone has their voting rights. Nothing you can do.

With Korea being quite liberal with surrendering and opening a lane, you'd think NA would actually learn a thing or two in that subject, instead of constantly copying OP builds.

yamees7/9/2017, 6:14:03 AM2 votes

There is always a possibility of winning even if it is very slim.

What is wrong with surrendering? It's bad strategy. You will lose 100% of the games you think are lost if you surrender. If you do not surrender, you will lose less than 100% of the games you think are lost. So not surrendering is ALWAYS the better strategy. I won a game where we were totally dumpstered. The other team decided to die in our fountain in order to be disrespectful. Long story short, I came out of the fountain and saved the nexus with about 5 hp left on it. The rest of my team came out and we were able to run it down mid and win the game due to their long death timers. That was a game where two of us kept voting not to surrender. There is always a chance, however slight it is, you will win the game no matter how bad it looks if you do not surrender. If you surrender, that chance is zero.

Drugoth8/11/2017, 6:58:23 PM2 votes

I never surrender because there is always that slim chance you can claw your way back up to a win. If you surrender, you'll never know if that game could have been won or not.

This is a old game I was in a long time ago and it's one of the reasons why I don't really Spam surrender unless i'm 99.9% sure

The enemy team played around for so long we eventually came back to win.

Kloqdq8/17/2017, 7:17:59 PM1 votes

I try not to surrender but something I will just throw it out there and state some reasons. At least saying well we are down in every aspect and we have zero team work, maybe we should just call it and move on. I don't like losing and playing a game from completely behind can just be far too tiring to even be worth it. The fear of getting just destroyed and having a single mistake completely control your win or lose is kind of just too much to deal with sometimes.

Of course some people just throw the surrender vote out there because of tilt. Like x person has been stomped and is 0/10 because of a camp so they just want to give up. That shit does happen and they will want to stop playing because they aren't having fun anymore. It's really hard to say and a toss up for everyone. Sometimes people will want to surrender and sometimes they don't want too. It just depends on the game.
