why does velkoz ult slow?

IMelchorI··13 votes·2,860 views

the entire reason it can deal 2k aoe true damage, is that it has a slow turn speed and you should be able to dodge it. so why when you are not playing a champion who is overloaded with mobility like LeeSin , is it impossible to escape and it oneshots you when you touch it?

Yeah, lets go nerf one of the champion that has caused of the least balances issues ever.

Good idea.

If you remove the slow his ult is basically useless, since it'd be simple to just walk out of it like its nothing.

well, to be fair. thats the entire idea. its why it deals so much damage.

think about it. a juggernaut like darius is fine dealing a shitton of damage because his damage is avoidable. its kindof a balancing act between counterplay and payoff when you hit a fully channeled ult. vk ult damage is absurd because it should be equally easy to counterplay by walking out of it.

so it deals a fuckton of damage because it has a slow turn speed and is easy to counter. which means you need teamplay to set him up to hit a good ult. but when you hit one, it annihilates entire teams.

lets say a Sejuani stuns the entire enemy team, allowing the Velkoz to follow up with a full channel of the ult on multiple opponents, then the (more like ~ 1k true damage with 3 passve procs) is well deserved.

but its true that since it has a slow attached, it automatically removes its own counterplay for champions who arent exceptionally mobile.

due to geometry, especially at long distance it becomes easier to hit and harder to dodge out of.

That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard. By that argument mf ult should slow too and even tho it doesn't it feels ridiculously unfair to play against.

I mean, it's a giant body decaying laser beam designed to literally dematerialize anyone that touches it. I'm surprised anything is even able to move while that thing is destroying you.

So why doesn't Taliyah's ultimate kill any human-like champion? Getting hit by a solid wall of rock moving at the speed of a train seems like it'd be lethal.

Oh right, logic doesn't matter as opposed to gameplay balance.

exactly
Brand dies to summoner 14 and Annie

Technically, Taliyah's ultimate isn't a single rock wall moving across the map. It's made of many different chunks of rock pulled up out of the ground and mended together in rapid succession.

The only rock that moves from Point A (cast point) to Point B (end of the wall) is Taliyah turfboard.

That said, getting smacked in the face by Taliyah's turfboard would be worthy of total annihilation, and be logically sound.

that is not a valid explanation.

the ability deals stupid damage because it should be easy to dodge. the massive damage is supposed to be balanced because it is easy to doge. like Mordekaiser deals stupid damage when he is close, but it is difficult for him to get close. but since Velkoz ult slows, it removes its own counterplay for anyone who is not mobile like lee sin. it touches you and you can not get out of it anymore.

because item 3116 is bought regardless

so even if the slow was removed he still slows anyway so why bother

Fuh Queue3 votes

It wasn't meant to be a valid response.

Velzard of Koz3 votes

Let's ignore the stupid damage is dealt over time? No, the ult on its own even against researched targets doesn't deal stupid damage within single tick compared to others. And should it not slow, then you'd walk out of it with just that one tick.

Limmie6 votes

Because then people would just walk out of it.

A FLUFFY BUNNY 15 votes

I would assume because the ult itself moves side to side slow and it would be too hard to maintain the Ray on a moving champ otherwise.

Raven Redeemed5 votes

For him to use the ult safely he has to be far back which means people would just run out of the remaining ult range if it did not slow. In addition, if people get too close not only will he take damage because he is channeling, but he will also be unable to deal damage with his ult because the turn speed is not nearly fast enough for close range combat.

I'd also note that his ult doesn't deal true damage until 3 passive stacks which requires about 80% of the ult duration to achieve and is highly telegraphed if stacked by abilities.

Velzard of Koz4 votes

If it deals 2k true damage you were already half-dead anyways, since he had to trigger Research with three damage waves plus passive and then you would have to eat entire duration of that while he'd have to be extremly fed and full AP squishy.

The real question is why Illaoi's doesn't?

WhiperSnapers2 votes

When did illaoi get a laser beam?

[slayer-pantheon-popcorn]

Trenitaliyah1 votes

She doesn't and that's the point. One with a larger aoe laser beam slows you, and forces you to stay in range of it, the other just smashes around you, with a small range ult and you can just flash away from it 'cause you're not even slowed or anything.

WhiperSnapers1 votes

it was a joke, hence the amused pantheon eating popcorn

True but just nerf his passiv.

Critmaster Garen1 votes

basically a good analogy would be, if garens spin would slow people who get hit by a single tick.

how would you feel about that if you werent playing a hypermobile champion who can just dash out of it?

Teridax681 votes

I think it's a more general issue where a lot of abilities are given some slow just so that they're not just pure damage, and in cases like Vel and Jhin's ults it kind of messes up their counterplay. I also agree that gratuitious CC like this tends to impact low-mobility champions severely more than champions with gapclosers, so it might be better to just wipe off a lot of slows on abilities where they're not all that essential.

this is actually what i hate about this idea to attach slows to champion abilities to counter mobility.

it doesnt fucking work. the champions who are hypermobile are less affected by slows than champions who arent very mobile in the first place. youre not going to stop a Riven from dashing out of a Velkoz ult by slowing her, but youre completely fucking over anyone with low mobility and force them to take the entire remaining ult damage when they get hit by a single tick.

the same champions who are already easier to hit in the first place get hit even harder.

if you wanted to give velkoz a tool to deal with mobility, then add a goddamn grounded debuff instead of a slow. otherwise youre only accomplishing the opposite.

because if it didn't it'd be a straight worse version of MFs ult

DunkinNoobs1 votes

Real talk? It's so it applies Liandries for the entire duration. The slow is small enough to not make a huge difference mobility wise but combining it with Liandries leads to a significant increase in overall damage, especially in teamfights.

Xilixer1 votes

liandries really isn't an optimal pick for vel'koz. sure it brings the dot damage and health but the ap is lackluster and the magic pen is kinda mute when his main damage is true damage.

Oh how little you know. Vel's rework shifted into making him a lot more true damage oriented compared to before and yet he still does around 70% magic damage. The only 2 items that give Vel more damage than Liandries are Luden's and Deathcap. Last I checked, you get 6 items. It'd certainly be better than getting garbage Rylais on Vel'koz. Or worse, Void Staff, lul.

Xilixer1 votes

as a vel'koz main i do understand where you are coming from but the slow honestly to me is insignificant. i mean.....you can remove the slow if you'd like but chances are your still gonna die from my ult. although i believe the balancing for such a thing is basically if he ults and it doesnt slow you could then easily just walk left or right and avoid it completely effectively wasting his ult. now the thing with MissFortune is that she can literally crit off the ult so her just casting it has a chance to gib you to death. the damage is far more instant whereas the damage from vel'kozs ult isnt so mcuh unless you sit in there the entire time and if you do eat a full ult from vel chances are you put yourself there. although this is just my guess.

i can't stress enough how easy it is to counter the ult simply by applying any form of cc on him. most champs that vel faces in lane has some form of cc that can easily ruin vel'koz's day.

And A Real Hiero1 votes

The only people that get oneshot by Vel Koz are getting full combo'd and have tiny hp pools. That or Vel is fed and has a level advantage.
