Want support to be more fun?
Adjust the role to make roaming more engaging and appropriate. That way when you get ahead as a support in bot lane you could run up to mid to gank instead of babysitting your ADC.
Make the role truly about helping the whole team instead of being a slave to your ADC. Change it into a more proactive role.
This would also help differentiate champions within the class. Such as, are you the type of support who wants to roam in the first place or are you going to stay in lane?
So, if you play Soraka you get your heals and what not, but you don't have as much roaming potential. Then you are making an actual trade off for better in lane sustain vs map pressure elsewhere (potentially).
We see this already with some champions like Bard, but there is not a lot of game design focused around it.
How to encourage this? Increase the movement speed on explorer and make it "Out of Combat" instead of river only. Maybe even add a mastery for increased movement speed near your allies (on top of other bonuses). Add items like the Staff of Flowing Water and Trickster's Glass from Black Market Brawlers.
Support would feel pretty great if you could jump to a nearby mid laner and help gank that lane. The least fun support play is when you have to baby sit a bad ADC. At least this way if your ADC is bad then you have other things to do on the map besides popping plants and placing wards (mad respect to those good ADC's out there though, tough role to play).
