My (Unpopular) Opinion on the state of Tanks

I am a top lane main that has been winning a lot of games primarily on Volibear , Chogath and sometimes Nasus .

I think that there is a lot of fuss about tanks not lasting longer than 2-3 seconds in teamfights, etc. and frankly I am confused.

I find that when I play a tank, it is important that I need to realize whether my team can 5v5 before I decide to throw my body into the fray, but before I rant about the importance of macro/coinflip fights, I want to explain something..

Top Lane Agency

wow is there even such a term... anyways. It does exist! (contrary to popular belief) Whether it is controlling your lane, killing your lane, not dying to your lane, getting herald, invading/scouting the enemy jgler, and even teleporting/ganking somewhere other than top lane! ( HUH?) Top lane agency does exist.

Now now, don't fuss at me about 3/15 bot lane and how top lane cant do anything about that (because to be honest, your mid lane doesn't want to do anything about that either). **Any Game where a part of the team has +10 deaths basically makes the game no longer competitive unless the enemy is stupid(which still isn't competitive by nature imo). **

Now I've been lucky Ive been gifted some competitive games.. and my goal as the top laner is this (atleast my goal as Volibear ) :

  1. Push lane for first 3 levels( If its Camille or twitch or shaco I usually don't push because of obvious cheese potential) . Scout enemy jungle, and see if I can solokill. If not, continue laning with knowledge of jgler's whereabouts.

  2. Exploit win conditions, get a solokill. As Volibear , I can go for trades and chunk with W. However if the enemy has a lot of kill pressure, I usually don't try to trade unless enemy cooldowns are down. If they are squishy bruisers, they are easy to chunk regardless if they have summoner 14 , unless you are renekton, renekton mains can f off. xD

  3. You can't get a solokill? Pay attention to where the jungler is, this will dictate whether you can shove and TP/roam for dragon. (assuming your jungler NEVER COMES.) Your TP can make coinflip engages more decided.

  4. Buy pink wards. (I buy at least 5 before laning phase is over, depending on how many go down)

  5. Go for plates. If your laner is elsewhere and you have ANY form of waveclear… use it... always shove lane for plates.

Sidenote: If your team is flaming you for being afk when you are shoving for plates, pls god realize you are making the right choice

  1. Shove shove shove, and soon enough! You have the inhib… rotate and repeat.

This is what top lane agency looks like. If you think it needs to be changed, youre on the wrong forum bc im not a dev (lul) ..

Anyways, if you're dying in less than 3 seconds as a Tank you're either in a few scenarios:

-You're in a coinflip engagement where the enemy backline has superior positioning and you're basically tanking damage for no good reason.

-You're 40 minutes into the game and they have Kaisa Lucian Kayle Vayne… you get the memo. (Usually paired with the first scenario)

-You're caught out and 5 champions are attacking you at the same time.

I think I make a point when I say:

You are not meaningfully tanky when you are not meaningfully tanking!

Anywho, I don't really run into these scenarios(Unless its the last one xD) in my wins, I either secure a kill so that when we siege the teamfight is not coinflip, or I splitpush and make the enemy lose a team member, TPing to engage or getting a solokill. (I am describing a scenario where the missions above have been completed.)

In a scenario where the missions are not complete, you just pray to god because that's when you know you really are at the mercy of your teammates.

TL;DR: Get solokills by identifying win conditions and exploit them. aka "How can I get a solokill here? " (Also ask yourself in champ select, because if your win condition is the jungler, you're playing SoloQ wrong. )

That's my ted talk, Im open to discuss whatever you boutta throw at me. (Even if its tomatoes)

Yeah but the tanks you post arent even true tanks, if that makes sense. They are all bruisers of a sort, that go in, do burst dmg, and then try to survive with their 'tanky' passives or skills. Maybe not nasus since nasus is stupid in terms of healing, but thats a topic for another time. I think when tank players, me being one every so often when i need to be, say that you cant tank, is more based on ACTUAL tanks such as DrMundo Maokai Malphite Ornn . The problem is tank items are really shit compared to how much dmg there is and how cost efficiant the dmg items are compared to tank items. Another fact is that most tanks are streamlined into tanking in one direction, and being countered by the rest unless they are fed to the point of becomming actually unkillable. Hell, even maokai which i put isnt even good anymore because his ult doesnt do much for the direction the game is going in. Malphite was saved a bit with the changes, but hes always been a solid (no pun intended) pick. TL:DR tanks arent as viable because they just sit there and do nothing while everyone rolls over them unless they get fed, while bruisers (like the ones you said) thrive more because they actually do things. Thats my thought anyways

There's just a big difference in defence items that you think will make you tankier but will just make you seem bulky

The best tank item in the game, for an engage tank at least, is item 3193. You will not die if you use this and have aftershock, that gives an idea of how high your resists need to be to mitigate the damage enemies will deal to you if you're solo tanking

I often go:

item 3401 item 3117 item 3050 item 3193

I saw CoreJJ build it on Leona in his EU SoloQ games and he was beasting, and he would rush it after mobies, then go item 3742 item 3190

It's so good on things like Nautilus/Alistar/Leona. It also allows you to take stopwatch so you can towerdive with pretty much 0 risk, and that rune reduces stoneplate cooldown too, and makes the item cheap enough for a support... lawd

You just need base hp, then a hp item and then stack resists and stoneplate on top, become actually indestructible

Edit: By stack resists I mean resist heavy items with low hp. These: item 3110 item 3075 item 3143 item 3190 item 3050 item 3512
