If you can't cs early, doesn't that mean you're being zoned to the point where you wouldn't be able to pick up the coin drops?

Not really. You can pick up coins when enemy champion risks getting minion aggro. Or you can place barrel on coin and approach. And you dont have to step on coin to get it, u just need to approach it.
