Idea for an extra passive to add on to Ezreal's W

GuileRaven··3 votes·2,228 views

Basically allow his W to mark minions that it passes through. Auto attacking a minion will pop the mark (like Lux passive) and deal a percentage of AP in magic damage. This would give AP Ezreal some decent farming ability, without impacting AD Ezreal or harming his ability to poke without pushing. Popping minion marks should add stacks to his main passive.

Up the thread if you agree.

For those of you who say you don't "see the point", something tells me you don't main AP Ezreal or play him particularly often.

Why? I don't really see why he needs this. If you are dealing % damage its still %. It would directly buff both and I really don't understand what point it has to him?

AP Ezreal is not used in competitive play because his CS farming is complete crap. You can do well with him, but you will always fall behind in CS if your overall team doesn't completely dominate the map, and even then your CS will be lower than the rest of your team minus the support.

It will not "directly buff both". AD Ezreal will have 30 AP at most, and the mark only works on minions not champions.

Thats the trade off of playing ezreal. He has terrible wave clear. Not sure why he needs to have better wave clear or why AP ez being a thing is so important. Its not the optimal build for him, but it doesn't mean its bad.

"Not sure why he needs to have better wave clear"

It's not about waveclear, it's about general ability to keep up in cs with other champions during late game.

"why AP ez being a thing is so important."

People enjoy playing it, therefore it is important.

"Its not the optimal build for him, but it doesn't mean its bad."

The fact that it's not an optimal build is the important part. I don't understand why this needs to be disputed, if people want to play a champion a certain way they should be able too without handicapping themselves. Besides, mage fits his lore better. Also, I find it rather ironic that the "explorer" can't jungle for shit. Similar issues with Teemo.

You show little knowledge in this area and only pose a "because its fun" reasoning. First its all about waveclear. What you describe only boosts his wave clear. An Ez should be able to keep up in CS with just his Q and last hitting under tower. Its an unnecessary mechanic that would only overload his kit in meaningless ways and bring nerfs in areas that are fine.

Just because people enjoy it doesn't make it important to push AP ez when more people enjoy AD ez. Adding this unecessary mechanic would bring in nerfs.

No one is stopping you from playing AP ez by saying its not the optimal build. First you need to understand what optimal means here in that its the build that brings out the most of a champions kit. You may be able to burst more with an AP ez, but it leaves a chunk of Ez's kit and ignores it.

Actually there shouldn't be a way to play a champ a certain way without handicapping themselves. So then I should be able to play full AP Darius and be effective? Its not how balancing works at all. It shows a clear lack of understanding of how balancing even works. Each champion has a power budget and when you add something 9/10 you have to take something in return of "equal" power.

Lore doesn't matter especially after riot did their retcon. They said that gameplay is not guaranteed to match lore.

Yea, right up until the late game phase where all your CS is stolen by teammates or giant minion waves.

No one is stopping you from playing AP ez by saying its not the optimal build. First you need to understand what optimal means here in that its the build that brings out the most of a champions kit. You may be able to burst more with an AP ez, but it leaves a chunk of Ez's kit and ignores it.

It also falls short in comparison to other AP champions that have similar strengths and none of the weaknesses. Lets take Ziggs for example, his range is longer than Ezreal, he has a comparable burst, and a global ult. He has an ability that can either be used for mobility or damage. He has tons of crowed clear.

Actually there shouldn't be a way to play a champ a certain way without handicapping themselves. So then I should be able to play full AP Darius and be effective? Its not how balancing works at all. Handicapping in comparison to another build... AP Darius is incomparable, he is a warrior through and through. There is no thematic reason for an AP secondary build and it wouldn't play any differently anyways because he is already an ability reliant champion.

Lore doesn't matter especially after riot did their retcon. They said that gameplay is not guaranteed to match lore.

Well this is a problem.

It used to heal champions, maybe bring that back instead? Though, I really don't think Ezreal needs buffs right now.

As for helping AP Ezreal's waveclear, you'd be taking away one of the weaknesses he has that make him balanced.

I was not a player back then, but as far as I can tell; everyone hated that...

This is not wave clear, it's not a single attack that wipes out a wave, it's something lets him cs more effectively. You are still using your auto attacks and Q to CS, this just gives you a better window of opportunity. He can be played effectively in the hands of a skilled player, but that same skilled player can use a different champion better. That is not balance. Ahri is very similar but she does not fall behind in CS.

You're missing the point. By having a weak wave clear (Another example Leblanc ) he is allowed to have more power.

Are you saying we should remove her wave clear?

That's not at all what I'm saying. Ezreal has a cheap poke, Leblanc has expensive poke. So if she wants to burn 100 mane for a minion wave so be it. But if you want to burn 50 mane for a clear, then no.

I do quite well as AP ezreal. It's just other champs can do what AP ezreal does better. It is 100% impossible to keep up with CSing in late game as AP ezreal. Once the minion waves start pushing, the enemy minions will die too quickly to get a finishing auto attack in.

I was actually talking about the reverse, but that too. If you are winning and shoving into your enemy; your teammates will take all of the cs, unless you are shoving by yourself; in which case your own massive minion wave will be stealing it.

If you were to ask me though, unlike other midlaners AP Ezreal's strengths nowhere near make up for AP Ezreal's weaknesses. Having no waveclear already makes for a poor midlaner. Having no CC makes it worse. And to top it all off his damage, while significant is rather inconsistent

You cannot say that ezreal wasn't designed to be played as an APC because no one know except for the reds who designed them and I don't think they've told us. But at the very least what we do know is that thematically, his kit and original lore strongly suggests mage and that most people played him as a mage before his heal got removed.

To the first thing, you are the one constantly referring to his lore. To the 2nd one, there really isn't many people who plays him "regularly". But both of my friends who DO play him, sure not 1000 games a season, but have been playing him since release, think he is just fine and they both do just fine with him. No, see... You are pointing out a champion that needs fixing. I am pointing out a champion that needs fixing and giving a pretty simple suggestion on how to fix it. Fixing an issue is NEVER a waste of time, and in this case does not need any sort of major rework but rather a simple change to his W.

None of those examples give a contradiction between lore and gameplay. Obviously Xerath doesn't get to obliterate everyone just by blinking, but the lore says that he is a being of energy and that's reflected in the game with him flinging out bolts of energy. It's pretty hard to mistake "This permitted Ezreal to tap into his latent magical abilities without having to put any serious effort into it" for the description of an ADC. In any-case the rest of my points stand. Ezreal was clearly designed more with a mage in mind, or at the very least as a champion with dual ap/ad builds.

Here's my question to you though. All typical midlaners, past or present have had a way to deal with creep waves that wasn't attached to their ult. You've admitted that AP ezreal's strengths do not make up for his weaknesses. Given that this buff will not make ap ezreal overpowered and nor will it affect ad ezreal in any way or form, Why are you against this buff?

Okay, mobile isn't the best word. Sticky is what I mean. Xin sticks to a single target like glue, and blows away everyone else. Darius is the reverse, he doesn't stick to a single target he locks a whole bunch of them down and makes it hard for them to escape. It's a different mindset, and thus attracts different types of players.

Vlad has no CC other than his pool...if you really want to count that...

Vlad is AP but he is not really a midlaner. He is a top laner. Mid lane is for champs that like quick fights. Vlad is all about extended trading. He is tanky, something that most AP carries are not.

Vlad is AP but he is not really a midlaner. He is a top laner. Mid lane is for champs that like quick fights. Vlad is all about extended trading. He is tanky, something that most AP carries are not.

But Vlad was designed for mid lane. And he is an APC regardless of what you want to say. Secondly, I'm done with this thread. You refuse to listen to anyone else. Others have given good points, but you just refute it because it is your fav champion. So w/e. This thread is a waste of time.

But I HAVE been listening, and I have been explaining why I disagree. Wait, your angry because I can refute your points? What kind of logic is that? If they can be refuted then they are not "good points". Vlad is "still an APC" but he is an APC that plays different from other APCs and has completely different strengths and different weaknesses than other APCs.

The main issue here is that there are a number of AP champions that also excel at the things AP Ezreal is good at but are not handicapped.

Adding stacks to his main passive would be a little too strong becuase he'd get his passive up far too quickly that way, and get a lot of early game waveclear that other common adc's cant contend with. Ganks would do nothing to him because of his double flash capability, so he would be next to untouchable with that much waveclear.

However, the passive idea itself isn't bad. Maybe if it did 0 dmg and only % of AP, it would definitely provide useful for wave clearing as an AP/Mid ezreal. I like it! The passive stack thing is a nono though.

I disagree. We would have to see some testing to know for sure, it's definitely worth exploring. If it's OP then it remover it before applying the buff to the game.

As for other ADCs not being able to contend with it; I think you underestimate what they are capable of. Lucian has his double shot and 2 csing abilities (one of which is AOE, the other also hits 2 things). Tristana has a much more powerful attack speed steroid and AOE. Jinx has attack speed steroids and AOE (probably the best CSer for ADCs). Ashe has AOE. Varus has a similar attack speed passive, and AOE. Kalista can just stack her E on all the minions and nuke them.

Ezreal is the only ADC that is limited to 1 reliable but single target cs ability (his E is his escape, his ult is well. His ult, it also loses all it's damage when fired into a crowed; and won't get you much CS) , and has the only attack attack speed steroid that is mediocre late game and practically a non-factor in the early game.

However, the passive idea itself isn't bad. Maybe if it did 0 dmg and only % of AP, it would definitely provide useful for wave clearing as an AP/Mid ezreal.

Yes it should be % of AP only. No base damage.

Vayne has no waveclear, and her 'auto attack reset' actually makes her lose DPS when she has bought her attack speed items. Ashe's 'wave clear' is almost worthless for clearing waves until it's maxed for the low cd and even then you need to spam it. Kog'Maw has to choose between skilling up abilities that actually make him a threat and a waveclear ability - which is also his only 'escape' so he has to use it sparingly even if he maxes it for waveclear.

You get the idea. Some adc's have waveclear as a feature of their kit that they pay for in other ways (cait is an example), and some have other strengths (like vayne's dueling and chasing).

i never have much trouble csing as ap ezreal, i always go even with the enemy mid, just run ad reds and its easy you can farm with q or your ult and spam q to get your low cd ult off cooldown when its time to use it.

Yes, if you are good player you can keep it pretty even during the laning phase. It's after the laning phase that you will very quickly fall behind. Competing in CS with your opponet as AP Ezreal isn't that hard. It's competing with your own allies (including the minions waves) that is challenging.
