Poll: Wait 2-5 minutes in queue with a high chance of a filled player or 10-15 with no filled player

This doesn't count high elo like challenger, masters and diamond who have to wait long times due to small % of players

These votes are so stupid. It takes a few seconds for most people to realize, but with basic math it begins to makes sense.

Say 20 people queue up a minute for league and they follow a 3 Top/6 Jungle/6 Mid/4 Adc/1 Support distribution on average. Then sure, if you are the 5th person to queue up for mid in this new system everything is great. Then you would have to wait 5 mins for you to be put onto a team and another min for them to find the support to finish off the enemy team, but the problem is when the system has been used for 1 day (1440 Mins) then the new wait time becomes 1440 mins and this only becomes worse with time.

Now this assumes you chose one role. While this is true having a 2ndary does help even out the buckets it does not do it completely thus this will still happen.

This also assumes that players are "stubborn". This is to say they refuse to switch roles to any extreme point and are willing to sit in queue for X weeks waiting for a game. In reality a non-trivial minority of the player base would say screw it and autofill just to play after waiting a long time. This sucks for those players cause they had to wait so long AND don't get the role they want. This sucks as a business model as less games of league are played and thus less skins are sold and more people quit league for games with a faster queue.

The ONLY fixes to autofill are as follows:

  1. Play support or other unpopular roles.
  2. Riot making all roles equally desired to play in your elo at the time of day you play (GL with that)
  3. You could remove it and instead you rank all 5 roles in the order you prefer them (You choose 5 roles and still might get the 3-5 thus being "auto-filled")
  4. You could remove it in favor of call order. (Cause that is fun for us with Mac Clients that are slow af)
  5. You could remove it in favor of pick order. (Like what ranked use to be for role selection)

TL;DR If no autofill then there will be cascading effect making matches take longer and longer until players just don't want to play or say screw it and pick fill. Both of which are bad for Riot Games.

There are two major (and one minor) flaw in your model.

  1. players choose two roles and not one which significantly cuts down on time.

  2. players are placed back into the pool when their game finishes. This ensures wait times will never get to the 1440 minutes in your mode

  3. the distribution of players is far closer than your hypothetical model. The most popular role in mid which caps out at around 24% of players. The least popular roles are top, support, and jungle depending on your rank and server at around 18%

Realistically, solo queue does not need autofill outside of masters+ and the only reason autofill is even a thing is to prevent all solo players from leaving flex queue
