Gotta love that matchmaking Riot

Feels good having to play a game where your mid laner just hit lvl 30 and is playing hes/hers first ranked games and at the end of the game ends with a score of 1/7/2 and 5k gold in a 24 minute game, even our support and the enemy support got 6k gold. This is the BS us low elo players have to put up, and unless your miles and miles better then these players you are NOT going to climb easly.

don't be bad enough to be in iron tier then. Get off your potato computer, and learn the game.

The odds are that you will have that against you more often than you have that on your team (5 of them vs 4 of your teammates). The fact that you low elo players do not understand that is probably a reason you are low elo.

I will ask, where do you want Riot to place these people? Just force everyone to start at Iron rank? People would simply complain that they are getting stomped by people who were forced to start too low then.

What else then? Force new level 30s to simply only be allowed to rank against other new level 30s? Seems unfair and could result in gigantic wait times for games. Not to mention, the skill ranking from this would be artificial due to not playing vs the normal population of players.

Only other idea would be to delay new level 30 accounts even longer, but then how many more games do they need to play before being allowed to play ranked? Level 40? 50?

Like it or not, there isn't one solution that will fit all and make everyone happy. Being around the rank that new accounts default on for level 30 is going to happen at some rank no matter what.

of course you wont climb easily if you are not far better then these ppl

if you are silver 4 but your skill is say silver 2 you should climb slowly then

We don't have time to work on matchmaking or balance, it's much more important to spam new champions and skins and make cinematics

Because you'll keep playing regardless

Tbh you shouldnt be having these problems since riot introduced iron rank, since new accounts always start in there (not in silver like it used to be).

That also means smurfs and many other things that have WAY more skill than the Iron's "supposed skill floor" are also placed in Iron. At the end of the day you have to beg not to get a smurf on their team. Even I hate having a smurf on MY team.

Same Shit last 8 games my tema always had at least 3 players lower than lvl 50 and 6 out of 8 found people who intentionally wanted to lose. The actual matchmaking is a total shame

PaffWasTaken1 votes

Well, new players being matched with low elo is kinda the ONLY possibility there is for them. There's barely any actualy new players now and its getting worse and worse, new players can't get matched with other new players if they don't exist. If they had to actually wait for matchmaking to match them into a balanced game, their queues would last almost as long as the 30+ minutes queues in very high elo, and thats the kind of thing that makes a player getting familiar with a new game to just quit to never come back.

The problem isn't matchmaking for this particular situation, the actual problem is ranked being availlable way too early as of today. Before the leveling expension, level 30 was an actual achievement and made you unlock runes/masteries along the way, but now it should be a tad higher to be able to play ranked to compensate this problematic rework who never got its flaws fixed.

What the fuck is this crap , you'd think in fking 4 years they would've fixed their fking matchmakiing

Raiyza1 votes

I agree. Why the fuck can't new players start at Bronze 5 like I did? Why do they get paired into Silver games?

Karunamon2 votes

Because a ladder, by definition, has to start players at the average skill level (which is mid silver) and they adjust up or down from there.

Iron is, and no offense if you or someone you know is in that rank, way below average skill. That's literally what it means.

Raiyza1 votes

I don't agree with that. New players should not be automatically assumed as average skill level. If the account is stepping into ranked for the first time, after only recently hitting level 30, it should be painfully obvious they are lacking in basic game skills. They should be placed into Bronze to start off so they can learn. Getting stomped on does not learn a damn thing.

You can't do that - not in this ladder, or not any other one. The safest assumption to make is that a new player is average skill, and then you adjust them up or down as they prove themselves. At best, someone who sucks with the game will quickly find themselves in iron as they get out of placements and they only got to impact 10, probably fewer games.

A level 30 has to play a decent amount of games to access ranked, and you're also assuming that new account == new player - remember that League is losing players overall, so most of the new accounts are probably smurfs or returning permabanned.

Raiyza2 votes

Lol, some smurfs then because they play horribly 9 times out of 10.

I mean, you're probably right. I don't have reason to doubt your explanation, but I don't think it's fair that my games should be a "testing" ground for newer ranked players. I can play to the best of my ability, and still lose the game because my jungler/mid lane are new to the ranked scene. That isn't fair to me, or to them.

Karunamon1 votes

This is going to sound like asshole flamebait, and I promise it isn't, but someone is going to be stuck being the testing ground for those new players, and if you're in mid silver, it's because your skill puts you there in the ladder. It isn't fair to put provisionals in gold because statistically, they'll get roflstomped. It isn't fair to put them in iron because statistically, they'll do the stomping (and get subjected to some of the worst behavior this game has to offer)

And the best way to avoid this problem is to get to silver 1. This puts you out of range of most of the newbies.

Look at it even from the standpoint of user experience. Someone who gets dumped into Iron even if they win all their placements is going to feel terrible, not just from a "what the f*ck did I just waste all that time for" standpoint, but also from the quality of teammates they're going to get. I placed into bronze 1 after a loss streak in placements one season - I didn't play after placements that season because the trolling, tox, and general sh*tassery in that elo is horrid. Nobody should be in that rank unless they suck enough to be forced there.

That's why I say put them in Bronze. If they really are smurfs, they'll climb out. If they are new players, they'll learn and climb on their own. You're right though, low elo is horrid. Even in mine, which I am silver1 in bot lane. Gold last season.

Nobody should be in that rank unless they suck enough to be forced there.

But that's the thing. Newer ranked players do suck enough. Not of any fault of their own, but just because they hit level 30, doesn't mean they are silver/gold material. Shit man, I remember when I first joined ranked. I barely warded. I didn't have map awareness. I couldn't last hit properly. I didn't own most champions. This is the problem. Bronze level players don't have the micro/macro skills necessary to carry a game. And they won't for a while. That's why I feel like solo queue is in a horrible state and that newer ranked players should start at the bottom, and work their way up.

Karunamon1 votes

Newer ranked players do suck enough

Again, not intented to sound dickish here, but that isn't an assumption you can make with the millions of people that play this game. Your entire play history across however long you've played is a drop in the bucket and isn't enough to be setting policy based on 20 million other people.

Silver is average skill. Middle of the road. That's what it means. Not good, not great, not trash, just merely okay. It's the skill level that most people who play this game are at - why would someone who's new be statistically worse than that when the numbers show they're more likely to be that?

Just look at the rank distribution - silver alone accounts for almost 40% of the player base worldwide. Bronze 25, and Iron a lowly 5%.

That's why I feel like solo queue is in a horrible state and that newer ranked players should start at the bottom, and work their way up.

I could only support this at all if Riot would get serious about tox - but they have shown absolutely zero movement on that front. If you're permabanned a new account ready to enter ranked is five minutes and $10 on eBay away. Bronze/Iron are absolute dumpster fires.

Don't worry, I'm not taking you as a dick. You're good man. I'm not trying to be one myself.

I should have clarified. Most new ranked players are bad enough. You can tell just by the way many of them play. No kiting, no warding, very poor CSing, etc etc. That is what makes it frustrating to climb.

But since most of those players wind up in Silver even after their provisionals, Silver is a reflection of that play style. That's what I mean by average. Not "average skill" as in halfway to mastery, but average skill as in "that's the skill level that most players of the game have by definition".

Most people objectively suck at league, and I definitely count myself in that number.

I know I'm not great at League, but it is incredibly maddening when my games are lost because players don't display basic skills. I absolutely hate it when I say "Bro, I have a 35 ward score. Why the fuck is yours at 8?!" at 26 minutes in. and I main ADC.

I guess I'm just salty, but jesus Christ I wish Riot would actually acknowledge that they want to improve this MMR system they have.

Same man.. I haven't played a game in months and probably won't until well after the regularly scheduled Spring random stat change f*ckfest keeping the game fresh upheavals are over with. I'm seeing very little positive feedback about the new ranked system, a lot of glaring omissions, and lots of old problems that are only becoming less and less tolerable as the years drag on.

I've heard it said that knowing how to ward and CS is the main difference between silver and gold - Don't know how true that is.

Raiyza1 votes

You wouldn't believe how true it is. It's really bad.

I really hope they do address toxicity, MMR, and game balance. It is true they are losing players, so let's hope. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Here is the thing. If you think that you should be higher than you actualy are. You need to play consistetly better than average in your rank.

Everyone is having bad games. I'll tell you, you will face 0/10 mid on your side even in higher plat/low Dia. However if you dont flame, do your best to carry those who are behind and punish enemy team mistakes. You will be climbing even with teammates you describes.

There is a lot of guides how to climb, best advice, imho, is that when you lose 1-2 games in row. Get a breake. Play normals, arams or go and do something productive. You will not play well if you are tilted by 2 lost games and that will cause more lost games and more tilted mind set. This will continue until you drop a lot and force you to write on boards (not trying to be dick)

tbh, flamming and chatting in games where you are behind is the reason why the game is lost.

When we are playing flex with premade of three and randoms are feeding. You can see the difference how they play if we start to flame. However if are quiet or typing something like "dont worry about score just farm we will try to carry it". Most of the times these players actualy come back to game and doing good.

Morale is a powerfull tool.

By what definition does a ranked ladder have to start you at average skill level? If anything, going by the term "ladder", it should have to start you at the very bottom since that is how ladders work...

Leetri1 votes

Skill ladders ALWAYS start you at the middle, otherwise they literally can't work. If you play chess you're not gonna start with 0 Elo, you start at the average (it was like 15 years since I last played, but I think it was around 1500 Elo?). If everyone starts at 0 Elo no one can gain nor lose any Elo since it's a zero-sum system. That means that if everyone started at the bottom literally no one would ever be able to climb a single rank, defeating the point of a ranked system. It's not a literal ladder, and calling it a ladder is a bit of a misnomer. No idea why it's called a ladder though, I guess it's cause you climb it?

Grokmir1 votes

I don't see how they "literally" can't work.

How does having people start at 0 elo stop them from gaining elo? The ones that win gain elo and the ones that don't won't get anything or lose anything if they are at the bottom. It actually CAN'T be a zero-sum system in that situation, since the losing side doesn't actually lose anything. And once you've gained ANY elo the system becomes exactly what we have now. Or at least it will as time passes and people settle into their skill brackets.

A real zero-sum system would be if everyone on the winning team gets +10 lp and everyone on the losing team gets -10 lp.

This all just sounds like a case of "this is how it has always been done so this is the only way it can be done".

And at this point it would be simple for riot to just move the starting line to the bottom of the ladder, especially since they already have a well developed ranked community. There's not really any excuse outside of them just not wanting to do it for whatever reason.

I am not going to pretend to be good at this fucking game..... but these fucking kids are so damn bad like wtf. You can't even do anything but play for yourself because team always going to let you down. But you keep forcing the game to 5v5 so we actually have to give a shit about our teammates.
