If Kalista is ever going to be worth picking she needs a new Passive

Rebonack··55 votes·2,664 views

Simply put, the passive she has now makes her a hard-counter champion. Any time a hard-counter champion has any degree of generalist power (and Kalista has a ton of that in her kit, just watered down from nerfs) they completely invalidate whole sections of the roster when they're a viable pick, let alone a contested one.

Giving Kalista a new passive (maybe some kind of buff when her spear-buddy dies? Gotta get her some vengeance) would allow the parts of her kit that are actually compelling (THE neutral objective control Marksmen with a side of Initiator) to be buffed significantly.

I thought Kalista's core was the fact that she buddied up with someone to exact vengeance. The leap thing seems just tacked on to me.

Precisely.

Hopping around like an idiot has no connection what so ever to her theme as a champion. Her thing is making a pact with people to exact vengeance for them on those that wronged them.

That would work if she could only dash toward opponents. Then you might be able to argue she's using her forward moment to throw her spear harder.

ChaoticPinecone2 votes

Thats if she is using her body to work with the spear - meaning she is jumping forward, then adding the spears velocity to her current moving speed to get a faster-traveling spear.

What we are talking about is force. Every force has an equal and opposite force. When you throw something like a ball, your body receives the same amount of force that was applied to the ball - you dont move backwards because of the force you place on the ball isnt strong enough to offset your mass and friction. But youll notice this force if you reduce the friction - if you stand on a skateboard and put all your force into throwing a ball, youll notice that you roll backward. If you apply this to Kalista, she is using that backwards force instead of absorbing it. If you jump backwards at the moment you throw, your adding the equal-and-opposite force to your own.

Flawless Fetus3 votes

You're right, but her passive is what makes her her. Removing that would totally change the champ. Balancing around a champion's kit makes more sense than balancing around their lore. If the game was balanced around lore/theme sol would be instawin, aatrox would be a support, and you'd have "smokescreen vision" when playing Lee sin. Her passive is unrelated to her lore, but her passive is what's iconic about her

Felvyne1 votes

Not defending that her passive must stay, but come on, have you tried to launch a spear/javeline? Kalista's passive it's because combat style, the body's inertia when launching a proyectile. It's justified by that, not the theme as a champion.

Wimbledofy5 votes

but she pretty much jumps after throwing not during. And she can jump backwards so realistically that doesn't make much sense with what you said.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

Actually, realistically it makes perfect sense to jump backwards. Every force has an equal and opposite force. If she throws her spear with enough force, her body receives the same force in the direction opposite the spear.

Its the jumping side to side that doesnt make sense.

Wimbledofy3 votes

that's how it works if it's a gun that is shooting... have you never thrown anything before? If you jump backwards you are taking momentum away from what you are throwing. The equal and opposite reaction comes from you pushing your feet into the ground and moving your arm forward. Her body isn't receiving the force, it's making the force.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

Uh, have YOU thrown anything before? I feel like this is common sense.

Nobody said anything about "momentum when throwing" - that situation youre talking about is more about about the amount of force, and doesnt have anything to do with the force that exists. When you plant your feet, youre able to generate more power in the throw because the ground also excerpts a force. It doesnt mean that the pushing your feet into the ground the source of ALL force. People in frictionless, gravityless environments (like outer space) are still able to generate force - its just that without being grounded, they get pushed away when they push something forward.

Have you ever played on a trampoline? Or even thrown a ball in the middle of a jump? Youre still able to throw a something in that state, even if your body isnt touching the ground. In those situations, your body is both generating the force and receiving the force (Actually, in all situations your body is generating the force and receiving the force, but when youre on the ground friction stops you from moving).

Seriously - try it. Sit on a skateboard (or stand on roller skates, or do something similar). Get a heavy object and throw it forward. You will notice that you roll backward. This is that "backward" force that Kalista is using when she jumps.

Wimbledofy1 votes

that force is so small though that it is meaningless. The reason a skateboard would roll backwards is because you are or should be trying to push forward to increase the strength of your throw, if you leave your feet completely stationary you'll get a much weaker throw.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

The force to push a 200 pound man backwards on a skateboard isnt meaningless.

But more to the point - the physics make sense. During her Q she plants her feet, charges, and has a long followthrough; all these movements increases the strength of her throw. Her autoattacks are much weaker than her Q; instead of planting her feet, she uses the backward force applied from the throw to jump backwards, resulting in a weaker throw.

Felvyne1 votes

Tbh, I feel more awkard junping to the front than backwards. At least I try to compensate the inertia with an opposite force, not the same (I would fall, probly)

AlienPrimate1 votes

My suggestion is to swap her W and Passive. Have her passively do more damage to enemies her linked partner has damaged and make either her W be a toggle or an active. Then make some kind of mechanic that after so many minion kills, 1 champion kill, or 1 champion assist a sentinel is automatically created to scout nearby areas with an AI focusing on going into bushes.

Toggle - spend x mana per auto attack to dash active - activate to dash on auto attacks for a short duration then go to a cooldown

The leap frog thing is core to what she is, that's the issue with it. I can't see them feasibly getting rid of it, outside maybe windowed power like needing to stack something up or use some sort of skill to let you hop for a bit. Getting a buff from a team mate dying was actually one of Kayle's abilities once, Eye for an Eye :P

And it shouldn't have ever been core to what she is. It never should've existed.

Lucian is already the super-mobile Marksmen. That's his whole thing, dashing around whilst gunslinging.

The overall health of the game is far more important than Riot hanging onto bad mechanics.

A dash coupled to her Q would be fine. In either direction, yes, longer leap than her current one, yes. It wouldn't make much sense for her to go from massively mobile to totally immobile.

I agree - I'm so tired of the "core identities" of champions being used as an excuse for poor design and shit balancing. At some point, this game will be too overloaded with broken champions that it will collapse under its own imbalance. Agreed, core identities can be the main reason why a champion kit is disgusting.

Ekko 's identity is supposed to be a an skirmishing assassin with lots of utility. Honestly once i heard what his theme was supposed to be, it was only a matter of time before he was going to play as a hyper mobile tank with stupid amount of CC.

Camille 's theme is some fucking amalgamate of a assassin and a fighter, High mobile lockdown with an adapting shield depending on the damage. Yet they let her get through PBE with out any changes and are surprised when she's just down right broken. Again, who thought this would be a good idea?

No it's not. The leap frog thing is one designer going "hey I have this cool idea" and the team lead saying "well, we aren't going to save it for the next champion idea, just tack it onto the one we're making right now".

The Black Spear binding is her core. It's what powers her ult AND her W; those and her stacking damage mechanic are what define Kalista.

I think focusing on the themes of oathsworn and vengeance is the way to go, but not so much kiting.

Snowman Arc3 votes

I don't think it's that much of a problem. If you slowed her down, the dash speed decreases so much that it becomes insignificant. You want to talk about champions who can kite really well? What about Vayne becoming invisible every 2 seconds? Or Ezreal blinking every 3 seconds, while naturally building Iceborn Gaunlet? Lucian also has a dash on a very short cooldown. Kalista is fine, and don't forget, if all else fails, just throw some CC.

I don't think it's that much of a problem.

It is that much of a problem. So much of a problem that Riot had to nerf her into the gutter to the point that no one would ever consider picking her until she eventually gets a remake. That single mechanic, which has zero relevance to her theme as a champion, is the factor holding down what could be an otherwise great champion niche.

Photos of Ghosts2 votes

Talking out of our asses again, huh? Riot nerfed her for competitive, when she was already weak on live servers. They nerfed her for what matters in competitive: free vision and better smites than the jungler, as well as the ability to give any melee support an engage. Nowhere in there is her passive

Prolly going to get some hate for this, but, despite it not being core to her theme, it is kind of core to her identity. And actually the reason I bought her/got decent with her when she 1st came out. My thought was 'oh cool an orbwalker' (Later learned that's not even the correct word for it..but..eh) Built in AA animation canceling, or a champ with different form of animation canceling (kalista is actually the only champ in game that you can't animation cancel her AA's) was kind of a cool idea. It just played out horribly in the LoL world.

So it both sucks that I bought into/spent time getting good with a fairly hard mechanic to master, and I can't play that champ because she's either banned or nerf batted till she's not worth a ban ever.

I feel like..they should get rid of the W active, or passive(s), or both. That whole button is just the definition of 'overloaded.' Free proc damage, free attack speed, free wards. I mean what is any of that mess and what the fuck does any of that have to do with her? Possibly save the proc damage with the soul bound, and move that as her passive. Always found it a little weird that doing the soul binding at the beginning of the game doesn't really do anything anyway. Isn't till level 2 or 3 that it actually does something. (Unless there are people who start W?) Then give her W something of her old passive/orbwalker hop thing in the form of an active.

I have a feeling this would fail too. Would be something like the KogMaw 5.0 attack speed shit all over again. Sucks horribly when it's off, WAY too stupid strong when it's on/works as planned. Also feel like Kindred basically got what Kalista should have got. The W/Q,Q,Q combo that lets her hop around a lot, as long as you follow a couple requirements. But still feel they should at least try it. Give her the Mordekaiser treatment. She's so unpopular right now. Just go ahead and fuck with shit. If it breaks her, oh well, she's already broken. Then just try something without the orbwalk. But feel like they should at least try and save the uniqueness of it. Other than just leaving it in the 'Olafed' zone forever.

EvilMerodach1 votes

Also I remember a Rioter saying at some point in her development, she had a mechanic where if she jumped forward, she got a slight bonus to attack damage, and if she jumped backwards she got a slight penalty to attack damage. I never understood why they didn't keep that. I mean it sounds great. Play aggressive, get rewarded. Play hit and run/safe, get penalty for it. Risk/reward. Plus it just makes sense as far as physics go. Throw a spear so hard you throw yourself forward with it, it's going to throw harder. Throw a spear and push yourself back with the force, part of the force is going back into yourself, so less force in the spear. Not going to hit as hard.

It could totally go the other way. She could keep the level of mobility she has in her passive, but she would have to lose basically all of her generalist power in order for it to work. You can't be a hard-counter and a generalist pick. I just figure the things I find more compelling about her (link mechanic, spear stacking, unique Ult) also happen to be the things she's valued for as a pick and as such are the things that should be focused on. On the other hand, the thing that she's hated for (the hopping) could get the axe.

How would you feel about her losing the passive hop but instead gets a charge system on her Q? Power of a single Q goes down and the distance of its free hop goes up. Stacks up to some number of uses and refills pretty quickly. That would still provide her with mobility, but it would be gated.

Personally I'd rather shift all the power in the hops. Just cause I found it fun/unique. It felt like a whole fresh new game when playing Kalista when she 1st came out.

But in general, it's probably less healthy. And makes summoner 6 item 3742 item 3009 Rammus sad AF when he can't even catch the b*tch. She can be such a hard melee counter. Like make them literally useless.

Shifting hops into Q is just turning her into slightly different Kindred Almost feel like Kindred was just like....the healthier version of Kalista So they can't even modify Kalista's hops much anymore cause they've already made a newer champ to replace what she should have been.

But, yeh, I kinda lost all will to play kalista cause nerf or ban broken kit. And even if they change her, it'll have to be sion style (just kill off the old champ and make a new one with roughly same lore) or if they use anything from kit it'll be all the stuff I didn't find that 'fun.' So she was just a waste of 6300ip for me.

But they probably should just hurry up and axe her. Leaving her around is just a noob trap/bait for me to get tempted to play her when I get autofilled to adc, even though I know she's basically troll status.

Kalista was literally gutted because of her passive alone. Her passive is not fine. If Riot just changed her passive and rebuffed her she would be a decent adc and wouldn't require being gutted just to be a "balanced" champion.

I personally feel that her passive should be removed, a hop mechanic as it is now added to her use of Q (as in, when she Q's, she can hop, it gives it a CD and mana cost), and then she get a new passive.

Photos of Ghosts2 votes

You are lying and you know it. She was gutted for competitive, while she was already underperforming in soloq including challenger. That's NOT the passive making the difference there. It's the vision, infinite stacking on epic monsters and the free gapcloser for Braums and Threshes.

MagikarpIsBoss2 votes

The passive is one of the main reasons why she was broken in competitive. I know her kit was really strong for competitive, but this was one thing that just made her insane.

Fondling Gems3 votes

I can agree with that but I think there would have to be a different champion that gets the leap mechanic. Personally it is the reason I play Kalista. The spears are fun, the buddy system is annoying whenever you get someone who doesn't know how it works or is just bad in general because you aren't even playing a full champion without your oathsworn there.

Too many of us really enjoy the leaping mechanic and it is a really cool and interesting mechanic that adds a fun element to the game. Plus it isn't inherently unhealthy, it is just a better form of orbwalking at it's core with some slow dodging abilities. It just was an issue when tacked on to everything else kalista does. I would have 0 complaints about her getting changes so long as we kept that passive somewhere in LoL.

As a side note I don't agree with that passive unless her whole kit got some reworks going on. Her ult is used to save your oathsworn half the time and suddenly you lose out on a buff for that? It boosts the engage element but at the same time if your oathsworn dies you lose out on your W AS too which doesn't make sense. If anything her W should give her a boost of AS when her oathsworn dies considering it already has an oathsworn oriented AS boost in it.

Her passive is absolute nonsense on her. It didn't need to exist in the first place. No champion should have that much free mobility.

Fondling Gems2 votes

First of all lets get a couple things straight. I agreed that the passive didn't make sense on her. I do not agree that it doesn't need to exist. More importantly it is NOT free mobility.

In fact nothing champion's get in LoL is "free" Kalista payed for her mobility in power budgeting. Go ahead, show me one other champion that does less than 100% AA damage.

The point is that champion's give up power in some areas for power in other areas and champions can be balanced around it. It is a fun and interesting mechanic that adds a lot of outplay and counterplay potential.

Outplay > Duh, you can dodge shit with it.

Counterplay > AS slows (which you can buy) reduce the rate at which she can jump, Movespeed slows (which anyone can buy) reduce how quickly she jumps. Her jump is delayed so she has trouble dodging very fast skillshots and dodging on kalista becomes a matter of prediction over reaction. She needs targets to AA, she only has one jump in her kit without it. The jumps are also quite short range, with tier two boots there are still only a few walls in LoL that she can jump over and she needs to stand right next to them so you know exactly where she is on the other side and her jump is highly telegraphed.

There is a lot of counterplay options to the ability and at the same time it adds fun rewarding gameplay that can express mastery of a champion, everything that a unique mechanic strives for in LoL.

Kled does 80% damage when dismounted

Fondling Gems2 votes

No, he doesn't get free crit chance. He pays for it in 10% less crit damage, does he pay enough? Probably not, but they did take power from other parts of his kit to compensate. There is a reason that at lv 18 he only has 650 base damage in his entire kit rotation, far below any other champion that fulfills a similar role in LoL. Compare that to someone like Wukong who fulfills a similar role: 1440 base damage across his kit.

Sad Tyrant1 votes

ok then, what does Darius pay for his free shit,

Fondling Gems2 votes

Are you going to walk me through every champion with a stat boost? It is like saying "What does Soraka pay for her healing?"

Oh IDK, her own health, mana, and the ability to do any real damage after 10 minutes.

Every champion's kit has strengths and weaknesses. Darius is gated behind having to stay in combat and stack his passive up, he also can get kited heavily and doesn't deal with objectives all that well.

Your issue is that you think of it as free power. No, it is power that was put in his kit because he is meant to be a sustained fighter, so his passive helps him do that. In return he isn't a great burst champion and he doesn't have any range along with a ton of other things.

Sad Tyrant1 votes

ah but if you have little Armour, he is great at burst :P

and to answer your question in the beginning, no, just those 2

Fondling Gems1 votes

Even then he isn't exactly bursty, he has to E > aa > W > Q > R while being very ahead vs squishy target to really burst them unless maybe they are the support. That is still a 2.5-3 second long combo almost all of which can be avoided or at least partially negated.

That doesn't even proc his passive, if you want to do that you have to get another 2 aa's in before ulting so I definitely wouldn't call him a burst champion compared to actual burst champions. Even a J4 will burst far harder than that is far less time with more mobility.

And the powerful initiation.

Spears don't stack beyond one on non-champions. No active on her W. No knockup on her Ult.

Either those all eat it or her hop does. If she's going to keep her hard-counter niche, then her hard-counter niche is all she gets. Because, again, when a hard-counter champ is anything other than a niche pick they invalidate whole classes of champions.

OR!

We could remove a supremely frustrating mechanic from the game and focus on the parts of Kalista's kit that are actually a valuable asset to a team.

This is exactly like people bitching about old Poppy's Ult being 'core to her identity'. It wasn't. It was a horrifically designed ability that was rightfully removed from the game.

If Riot were to ever use something like Kalista's passive on a Marksmen again, it should be the feature they're built around.
