Skins are personalization, NOT achievement awards. (stop the "Refund ur skin" comments)

Damagefox··96 votes·4,612 views

Getting so sick of hearing this every single game. If I have a bad game, sooner or later I will hear this line (and the one saying it often thinks they are soooo clever) "OMG U suck so bad, Refund ur skin!" It seems to always happen, you can have a bad game and regardless of the reason people will tell you to refund your skin. Get it straight, Skins are in the store as CUSTOMIZATION/PERSONALIZATION They are -NOT- achievements. Buying a skin does not come with the magical condition that you must get a quadra/penta every game or your skin will instantly disappear. Skins are there to add a personal touch, they are a way of showing off a bit of who you are through the champ you use. They do not require you to complete some skill challenge or get 3 pentas without dying in order to purchase them. Maybe if you ask riot nicely, they will develop a special skin that comes with a free pair of USB hands to help you hold your nose in the air. Maybe some day they will come out with special skins that are unlocked with achievements, But for the rest of the skins, They are in the shop for a reason, TO BE SOLD. If I find a skin I like, I will buy it, I will wear it and I dont have to complete your 28/0 uber-pro, get-a-penta-5-times condition to use it. So once again, Knock it off with the "REFUND THAT SKIN, U dont deserve it" remarks. They are really old, really boring, and only make you look like a self-entitled "better than thou" quackhole than someone trying to make a witty remark.

When I see a pulsefire Ezreal on my team try to 2v1/turret dive the enemy botlane at level 2, then proceed to feed, then cry about his support being worthless, I tell him to refund his skin because I imagine him to be a bratty 12 year old who took his mom's credit card to buy a $40 skin for a champ he doesn't know how to use.

For whatever reason 90% of the spirit guard Udyr 's I have played with absolutely dominated the game, no complaints there.

I think it might be because little kids love the ADC role, and the junglers are a bit more venerated players. (Especially since the jg in season 5 hits so hard) ROLE holy shit not roll. I think my brain not good work.

Why is he a bratty "white" 12 year old... couldnt you have just said a bratty 12 year old?

The Ellimiist4 votes

You just blew my mind, I had to reread his post because I literally didn't read the "white" part. Hurray im not a racist biggot.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Honestly i only saw it after the second time i read it, i was going to comment but i forgot if he said 12 year old or 11 year old, then i saw it and decided it best to point it out.

Apologies, I realize now that was rather insensitive. I have edited the post.

Thank you for calling me out on my prejudices.

Because there's the stereotype of white people being middle class and much better off than darker-skinned people. It's just a funny stereotype and I seriously doubt anyone's ever been harmed by it since no-one takes it seriously.

Stephenizgod2 votes

I know i was half joking, joking in that i mentioned it but kind of serious in that just because its harmless doesn't mean it should be allowed. Racism is racism if we want it to go away completely we gotta all work towards it, and stereotypes are usually derogatory and meant to insult (even jokingly) so we dont really need them either.

Kobila20001 votes

I think the problem with stereotypes is in how they perpetuate old harmful views that are damaging to society, rather than technicalities like "if it insults race it's all equally bad". There are plenty of people for example who still believe stereotypes about black people, but no-one really believes any of the stereotypes about white people because there isn't a whole history behind us that's been busy perpetuating them.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Well they have negative connotations, true or not you never really hear much about "positive" or "good" stereotypes. The issue with racism against whites is it really isnt seen by the majority as racism, which is a problem (not just because im white). Whether they believe the stereotype of white kids being spoiled rich brats or not doesn't matter, its the fact that it is not seen as offensive that is causing a problem. There is a lot of history behind the white stereotype of arrogance, entitlement and snobby brattiness, this comes from when white people actually believed they were superior. Also, until recently although its still somewhat true, white males have the highest potential for being successful in life, so i dont think it is wrong of me to say that a lot of high class people tend to be white. I do think that recently times have changed and more and more people are given these chances to succeed. Doesn't mean all white people are rich bratty assholes though.

Man they only tell you to refund your skin??? I get told to uninstall league.... :(

junglerboy166 votes

No, what they mean when they say "refund your skin" is that they think you suck at that champion and you shouldn't play them, which in turn means you should refund your skin so as not to waste your RP. Whether it is a polite thing to say or not is irrelevant, that is just what they mean, not that they expect greatness because of a skin, but that you shouldn't waste getting a skin on a champion you are bad with (again, irrelevant, because I am 100% allowed to suck at a champ but still want a different skin because their base is ugly in my eyes).

Srugg5 votes

I very much doubt the majority of people who say such things think that far ahead...

junglerboy162 votes

It isn't that they think that out every time before saying refund your skin, it is just that everyone who says that knows that it is a way to say "you are bad enough at that champ that you should never play them again", and to them, it seems witty to them to throw in "refund your skin, it was a waste of money" as a final judgement that you must have only bought a skin because you like the champ (reasonable conclusion).

RoyaiChaos1 votes

Either way it's not something nice to say at all. You can't really judge whether someone is good or bad at a champion based on a single game and they might just have began learning that champion.

junglerboy161 votes

Hence why I said it was irrelevant that it was rude and impolite, my point was simply to clarify what they likely meant by their statement. I never say it, and don't think anyone else should either. I'm not defending this in any way.

Felvyne6 votes

I remember when I joined LoL. Me and my friends where always looking up to the ones wiith skins because we though they where pros at that champion and because that they bought the skin.

Then we played with and against people with skins who had bad games or played really bad. And we bought skins. And then, we realized that it was a construction of our own mind.

I guess that the ones you say haven't realized that yet. They just need to mature in this game.

It's a normal reflexion.

At the beggining, I thought someoneplaying with a 6300 IP cost champion, which was not in a free week, was a good player. (When i was level 10, most of the players had Ashe, or the free champs. Someone with a 6300 non-free champ was quite impressive to my eyes)

"Wow, he waited so long for this champ, he was probably really good with this champ in the free week" Some of them were good with him (Well, for my level, I had the luck to have nearly 0 smurfs in my LoL youth), others sucked, but those with the champ had more chances to be good then the others.

I think it's the same for the skins: People generally get a skin for a champion they like, and play well with. Sure, there are always noobs getting skins for Zed because FotM, but people with skins have a tendance to be a bit better.

Yeah the way I see it, If you buy a skin for a champion, It serves as putting a bit of your own personality into the champion. So you strive to do better with it. I have skins that i dont use for champions I do use. why? Because the look doesnt connect with who I am. I have skins that I do use and I try and work hard to be better at those champs. Yes I will screw up but I will try to improve. But there is like this...unspoken rule. Have a skin? Then you are not allowed to: A) Die or go 0/x, you must be pro at all times B) Have a bad game, its assumed everyone with skins must play at challenger level C) be in any way unfamiliar with any champ

People expect everyone with skins to automatically be a league god from the start. You could buy a new champion (the release bundles like the reksai/yasuo release bundle) and scream "First time >insert champion

RoyaiChaos2 votes

Same with rank, they see that Plat border and expect you to be god, then get angry when you aren't. Of course, rank is based on skill and such, but mostly skill in a specific role or even with a specific champion (like me). Give me Janna and I wreck, but give me someone like Wukong and I will probably get executed.

I have had so many people rage at me when I used my season 3 silver icon...DURING SEASON 4. And People would instantly rage at me in bronze about how I am not Playing at a quality worthy of a silver. So they trash me for being in bronze in season 4...while assuming I am actually in silver because I used LAST SEASON's Summoners Icon I got at end of season rewards. They didnt even look at what season the icon was for. they just assumed "he has a silver icon so he must be in silver THIS YEAR" and then rage at me when I dont play at a level 'worthy' of silver

RoyaiChaos1 votes

Even if there's logic behind, people should never assume things, and then blame others when their assumptions are wrong.

DisasterSola5 votes

Your rage is misplaced. People assume that if you have a skin, youre uber good because you spent money. Its something morons say to validate them not spending money.

Also; Personalized skins would be amazing. Having the option to pay 50$ for a specialized "champion editor" that allows you to literally create your own skin (out of existing skins as bases) would be amazing. Say you like braums default but want him to be red instead of blue? Pay 50$ and you can!

So they assume that me having a skin is because...pay to win? and who is a moron? sorry the response was just...a bit confusing. I get the part about people thinking "skins must = lcs super pro" I just get so annoyed by having one bad game and listening to people say "refund ur skin, you dont deserve it" I deserve it..because I liked it. Thats why I BOUGHT IT. headdesks >..

and who is a moron?

The people bitching that you're bad with a champion you own a skin for.

its an insult towards the person. its basically saying "why would you spend money on a champ if you're that bad with it"

im not justifying it, just saying why it's used.

The reason for trashtalking is to put you on edge and on tilt and if it gets to you, its job is done.

So when its your own teammates do it because you make a mistake and go 0/1. then thier intent is to put you on tilt and thus assist the enemy team? So next time someone on my team shines a spotlight on ONE mistake and picks away at it for the entire game while telling me to "Refund ur skin, u suc. U dont deserve that skin bro" Does that mean I can report them for assisting the enemy team? :P

Also, Mystery Box purchases means that someone with a skin may not have even intended to get it. I massively suck with Riven, but I have and use her Dragonblade skin that the RNG thought I needed whenever I roll her in ARAM.

I have TPA mundo and i'v never played a single game with him for that reason ^

There is also a very noticeable difference from a player having a bad game, and player who doesn't know what the hell they are doing at all.

IreScal3 votes

I have skins for two reasons:

  1. I like to get skins for my fave champs I play. This does rotate a bit, so I usually now only get for the ones I prefer to play regularly for each role

  2. and I like to collect. For instance, I hate that Kayle and Ashe have mostly recolors (and kayle's are all about the same...), but I must have them all. I even lucked into Silver Kayle via a collector's box at Target.

There are some champs I have skins for. Whether I had extra RP and was like "meh" or I just liked the skin. For instance, I have skins for Shaco, Amumu, and Garen, but never play em except in bots.

shadecrapper2 votes

You'd think someone would buy a skin on a champion they like and are good with, so when you see someone suck with a skin you think "wtf?" Now I dont care, infact skin's almost mean less skill in my opinion.

What's really annoying is when you have an ironic name like LowELO4, people immediately jump on your case if you have a bad day. I mean they can't even think of their own insults for me, which is why I changed my name with IP to George W Bash (but then democrats always threw a hissy fit in my games (even though I'm (D)). Eventually it led to me picking a boring reference to Tokyo Ghoul because no one in the NA servers can take a joke name like a joke.

WyvernEgg1 votes

It makes sense because they're saying that you wasted money on a champ you're not good with. I agree that this behavior is wrong, just pointing out that you misunderstood.

Mellori1 votes

I buy skins even for Champs I don't really play if I like the way it looks. That way if I decide to learn them or play an ARAM, I can still show off.
