Ranks don't go by strength of the material it goes by rarity. Gold isn't stronger than bronze, its rarer. Copper (the main ingredient in bronze) is rarer than Iron, ergo, bronze is rarer than iron. Just like a gold player is rarer than a silver player, a diamond player is rarer than a plat, etc.
