What champions benefit well from AS runes?

Final Remnant ··4 votes·4,171 views

I wanted to try some AS runes and I bought 3 quints but I wasn't sure what champions would get the most benefit from them. I figured maybe someone like Tryndamere/Volibear/Gangplank/Master Yi/Yasuo ...etc just people you usually would build AS items on.

I don't see hardly anyone use AS runes on ADC champions but I suppose they would work on them even though you are sacrificing damage.

I am aware there are tons of champions that benefit from AS items but I'm focusing mostly on champions that would benefit from AS "RUNES"

AS quints are actually pretty common on many ADC runepages from what I've seen. Certainly a viable use if you run them with AD reds.

I know some tank junglers take them to help w/ early clears. You also see them on certain top lane fighters, particularly those that care about on-hit effects. Irelia and Fizz are two that jump to mind. And then if you don't have AD quints, other AA-heavy fighters (Aatrox, Jax, Trundle) can make use of them as well.

Maybe champs with stacking mechanisms, like Twitch, Vayne, Varus, or Gnar? I really have no idea, these just seemed like some champs that might make some use of them

I plan to buy some for Lulu jungle.

But as was already mentioned, AP junglers.

I run AS quints (usually with AD reds) on the following champs: Volibear Warwick Vayne Vi Rengar RekSai Lucian Ashe Caitlyn Evelynn Garen Kayle KogMaw Khazix MasterYi Pantheon Poppy Shaco Shyvana Sivir Trundle Tryndamere Udyr Urgot. I find it dramatically increases clear speed in the jungle, and a little bit of AS really helps with farming in lane.

Anyone with an on-hit based playstyle.

Vi Vayne KogMaw MasterYi Twitch and maybe some off-builds like Lulu and Thresh

The general rule is that they are good on champions whose abilities amplify their auto attacks rather than being nukes themselves. For instance, darius probably scales better off of armor pen or AD because his abilities scale with it in addition to his auto attacks. Someone like tryndamere or vayne, however, are based almost entirely off their auto attacks, and so derive maximum benefit from it.

AP junglers take AS runes for clearing because the autos do more than their abilities that early

i heard its good on reksai

i actualy bought them for gnar but i dont think they really help him much

TL;DR: For your adc list. Try out MissFortune Varus Vayne Twitch

Aatrox Ashe Caitlyn Chogath Darius Fizz Maokai MasterYi MissFortune Pantheon Shyvana Teemo Twitch Varus Vayne Vi XinZhao Irelia Tryndamere/Volibear/Yasuo I'm unsure if that would be optimal. Trynd I'm almost sure you're better off with AD or armor pen, he gets nothing extra from attack speed. So you're better off hitting less times, but just hitting harder when you do hit. Yasuo, maybe, cause of Q cooldown? Though with his passive, crit's probably going to win out, or just flat AD still and just hit harder when you do hit. If you wanna spam them whirlwinds and zone with it, it might be worthwhile.

Which lane are you talking about for this? Cause that does change a lot. Junglers in general favor attack speed over damage, cause they'll almost always be attacking at max speed while farming. While laners will generally not get to attack at max speeds, more poke and last hit, so AS is mostly going to be wasted in the laning phase (which is generally what runes are for anyway.) Unless you can get a quick triple hit off with Vayne/Varus for some heavy poke.

I put Maokai in there as kind of a special case. His passive only requires a single auto, but I remember Phreak running AS red's on him because when you need to get that auto off to get some health back, you want to do it as fast as possible so you have less time to take return damage/wasting the point of triggering passive to get health back, I tried it, and really like it. Just makes the auto timing feel so much better. ~disclaimer, unsure if Phreak or anyone 'pro' still considers that a good/viable option. I still like it though.

Some I listed simply because they do have a scaling with attack speed like Caitlyn (with her headshot,) though her AD scaling is so high, I can't see it winning out unless you're brush hugging a -lot- and getting headshots pokes on enemy adc continually (unlikely to do that and not miss out on some CS)

Smaller list to work with Chogath Darius MasterYi MissFortune Pantheon Shyvana Teemo Twitch Varus Vayne

Another thing to think about, especially bot lane, is who you're laning against. If you outrange them, you can sometimes get free hits without them even getting reply damage off. So AS could win out. Where if they have a ranged support/their adc outranges you, sustain (lifesteal) or ar.pen/flat AD probably win out cause it'll make your trades hit harder, and you'll be forced to trade damage mostly and not get free/unreplied damage. Also, if you have support Braum AS suddenly gains utility(yay free stuns,) even on adcs that have no AS utility, so makes it viable on some champs that might not normally run it. Draven

Just curious, why him? Wouldn't more ad be better since he axes have a "cooldown" of while they're in the air? Or is it more for the early game?

EvilMerodach1 votes

I'd only go AS on him with Braum support. He's good at all-in's, and Braum getting his passive to connect could mean a real fast kill if Draven does AA+E+AAx2 on them, knock aside, then stun. There's a good chance they'll die before they could even flash out. AS quints just makes it more likely you'll land the stun before they react. And yeh, it's pretty much all for the 1st blood potential. Get that and you can go buy an early pickaxe to make up for less AD on runes. I'd say AS quints on any adc with a good level 1-3 all-in would be worthwhile with Braum. Even if you fail the 1st blood, you have a lot of potential to force them to b early and kinda auto-win lane by being a level up/bully them out of farming.

The 'cooldown' for his axes is relative to his attack speed, he more attack speed you have the less time they spend in the air.

Draven needs a good balance between attack damage and attack speed, but I tend to lean more towards damage.

WTF!?!?!?!? HOLY SHIT!!! Well then, I honestly did not know that. I only played him twice, didn't really like him and just didn't end up looking at him more in-depth. Thank you for this information :)

Yay! I love it when people learn things here :D

Side note, does anyone else find high AS kalista hard to play? It might be that I don't have the timing down pat yet, but I find it really hard to jump between autos when you have like 1.50-2.00 AS.

Hoffmisc1 votes

It was easier when the passive had that indicator line that would tell you when you could jump and how far you would jump but for some reason it seems to have vanished.

It was there when she was released on the PBE but I've never seen it on the live servers.

Hoffmisc2 votes

You're welcome. I don't think that many people have played Draven enough to know this. Draven mains probably do.

With only one axe, and if you catch it very time, every other auto attack is empowered. So with two every attack is empowered.

I really like Draven but I don't play him that often. I main adc, not that many people do now, in season 2-4 adc and mid were the two most popular roles. Mid is still popular but adc seems to have fallen out of favor.

  • Vayne could use some (maybe like a quint and 2 reds or something like that) for more true damage procs (I actually prefer full attack speed reds and quints and pretty much ony use her ult for the invis. ((I usually forget about the chasing aspect as well))
  • Jax more ult procs and getting his passive stacked up faster
  • Kalista/Twitch more spear/poison procs (and in Kalista 's case more jumping)
  • Vi slightly more passive procs but might not be noticable and ad would be better
  • ANYBODY who's core item is item 3153
  • ANYBODY who has natural on hit effects that don't have a duration/non stacking effect (so maybe not Ashe as her arrows don't get better via stacking)

EDIT: FORGOT SOME

  • Caitlyn for early game headshot harass but might prefer more AD/Lifesteal
  • Jinx terrible AS without powpow stacks

anyone who DPS type maybe...

most of ADC too...

and maybe Warwick (proc Wit End faster) or Shyvana (so can get Dragon quicker and can be forever since her Fury always regenerate through autoattck in both form) too... Jax, Irelia, Kayle, Udyr and Master Yi in lesser extent...

for jungler maybe anyone who go Devourer...

Only Play Darius1 votes

MasterYi for more double-strikes and shorter cooldowns on alpha strike.

XinZhao for more healing.

Diana for more frequent cleaves.

Nocturne for obvious reasons.

Volibear since he scales nicely with attack speed.

Warwick for improved sustain.

Zed to revert the nerfs to his attack speed growth.

Kayle AS marks more than quints.

Duke Anax1 votes

You want AS on anyone that has high base AD or on hit effects, that is true for both runes and items.

However AS quints aren't that effective, though they are still better than AD or penetration quints.

But I usually go with AS marks and use some defensive quints. (AS marks are better than AS quints and Armor quits are better than armor seals)

On ADC I run AS quints with AD reds.

Ok, I have a question to add onto op's question. When do you take scaling IAS vs flat IAS?

Haha...trolling right? AS is always scaling. There is no flat, cause, it's % based, always scales with the whole game/champ level cause of passive AS gains.

windwolf7771 votes

Actually, I meant runes. I didn't know there weren't any scaling as runes until I looked

Udyr right?

Only if you go Phoenix Udyr. Q scales much better with AD (it does a 2nd DoT based on your AD, but ignores your AS for that effect, and each auto adds a % of your AD to it) So much so that if, despite AS being better for most junglers, you start Q on Udyr, flat AD gives you a faster clear speed. Also Tiger buff at rank 5+3 stacks of passive = 100% bonus AS, running AS quints on him, plus any kind of attack speed items, you're running the risk of maxing at 2.5 and wasting some AS.
