A reason why most hate Damage Meta over Tank Meta

WARNING: This is my opinion and I had to get it out. You are free to agree or disagree with me, so read on.

A lot more people on these forums talk about being one-shotted these days; and that might be the biggest problem about Season 8’s design philosophy. However, I do have worse nightmares about the Tank Meta: how new Chogath, Braum and new Maokai were the best of the best a season ago. I do remember struggling against those three in an in-game tournament last year, and it was no fun at all.

But from what I have seen and analyzed, people hate damage more than tank. The reason: more damage, in Riot’s eyes, might bring more satisfaction, yet instead, the ones on the receiving end bring more frustration, enough to vent and express it towards others on a stream or a forum. And with new Dark Harvest fueling the fire, it was only a matter of time.

However, I will always fear the tank Meta over the damage Meta. The damage Meta is something that, in my personal experience, can either be outplayed your opponent, or fought back with fighting fire with fire. And if my skills are unfortunately not enough, then it frustrates me, but it also teaches me to formulate plans and adapt to the opponent’s gameplay, like Street Fighter laning phase style. Yes, there are bad sides, like the bounty system for one and dying more due to the increased damage means that you can’t play the game more often. Plus, I thought the fights were more exciting and skill-based, and the pressure was enough to make me excited.

Tank Metas on the other hand, feel like a slow-moving, unstoppable glacier. Not only does the game move so much slower, the fights and pace also feel drawn out. Assassins barely had ways to stop the unnerfed carries (‘‘twas the time of neutered Rengar and unremarkable Leblanc) and peelers were all the rage. But what kills me most is the fact that comebacks were almost impossible to pull off, and when one side has the gold advantage for tanky items, it is almost a guaranteed loss. So not only do I feel frustrated, I also lose any sense of hope of winning as the game drags on.

The reason why Riot wanted to walk the damage Meta route was because 2017’s World’s was so agonizingly boring. Players rarely got kills, tanks just slapped each other in top lane, and peeler supports and junglers stopped any sort of skirmishes and team fights, until someone makes a mistake. Essentially put, EVERYBODY played safe.

And there’s the key word: safe. Playing safe means that you won’t have to die often. Thereby not dying means not giving the enemy the advantage and not trading with the enemy means not getting killed yourself, thereby letting you play the game for a longer amount of time. If that is what most people want from League of Legends, then I seriously hope you’re ready for long drawn out games.

TL;DR: Sure, damage metas are terrible, but in my honest opinion, tank metas are worse. Everyone hates the damage Meta because fucking up means dying and not playing while dead sucks. But I will always abhor tank metas for making the game so slow paced and safe through peeling just makes me lose energy and hope for winning a game. Riot made a good decision for bidding damage in the game. It’s just the other decisions like gutting ADC items and making mobility so plentiful that also make me sometimes dislike the game.

But what do you guys prefer? A damage Meta? Or a tank Meta?

I like Tank Meta. You can outplay stuff, it takes time, doesn't feel as frustrating as Talon or Akali.

See, I'm biased as fuck. I prefer tank metas on the basis that I generally play tanks.

This is the worst ADC meta I've ever seen. You say "damage meta can be outplayed", but I see shit like Irelia suicide-dive the ADC and even in a 1v5 situation she can pretty reliably kill them. I frequently see bottom lanes that are what we used to call "cheese," like Lux/Veigar or Yasuo/Thresh, and then they win because ADC are so incredibly undertuned.

I think the Tank meta had one issue: tanks did too much damage. Instead of making tanks in league of legends tank damage while barely dealing nay, like in most other games, they decided to remove tankiness altogether, turning tanks into sub-par assassins. I would prefer if they reverted most changes since the tank meta, and simply nerf tank champions' damage output.

Yeah, because that’s fun, every fight sixty seconds long and every game an absolute drag out slog, yup, so much fun man.

If they actually nerfed tank's damage that would not be the case whatsoever (As, as with any other game, you can just ignore the tank for the msot part, it then requires skill from the tank to try tog et you to attack them and/or to block skillshots)

Yeah that is the problem, tanks had too much damage and was why the tank meta was so strong. Riot has a damage first mentality than that is something that they need to get rid off.

Thumbs up for good argument despite my own disagreement. I think that a tank meta allows you to play with more skill because you don't have a lot of damage and an easy means to snowball. Once you have the right damage comp, you can open up the enemy team like a starfish eating a clam. Tank meta's give people more defensive and those allows only tank busters to have the real damage in the game alongside assassins and ADC. The problem is that the damage meta has invalidated tanks and forces people to mindlessly deal damage while also adding more and more snowball mechanics in the game. People want to have a longer but good game than a succession of quick frustrating game that makes you more and more mad.

Now you can only climb if you become and even worse meta slave.

I believe the main problem is, like you described, that one-shots are frustrating on a fundamental level. You can say "git gud" all you want but at the end of the day, it is still important how the gameplay feels and that the players feel like they have at least some agency. And if that environment is balanced or not is not even the important question when it´s straight up not fun.

So I would boldly claim that most people would describe a fight against an unbeatable tank as more enjoyable than a fight against an unbeatable assassin/bruiser etc even if it´s just a little bit because even though these fights are just as hopeless you at least get to do something before you die. And it´s funny that you mention these high dmg oneshot fiestas as something you can look back and learn from when I have observed the exact opposite.

longer time to kill: more interaction is needed positioning mistakes can happen more often abilities can be missed/dodged

shorter time to kill: basically the opposite. You can have intense fights, but usually only between two highly mobile champions. Everything else boils usually down to flashing away or hitting hard cc in a split second, or just don´t be there and it´s all pretty binary.

From my personal experience, I have never sat there after getting dived behind two towers or next to my teammates and dying in less than a second thinking "yeah I could have played that better, maybe I should have stayed at the fountain." On the other hand on the rare occasions I do play one of these highly mobile high dmg champs myself I never encounter a situation where I don´t believe I could have done something better. I just have that many tools at my disposal. The clear difference in player agency is so blatant and I think it contributes a lot to the fact that these playstyles are so popular by those who play them while being so despised by those that have to be on the receiving end.

Summary: I would take a tank meta over a dmg meta, a longer ttk is usually more skill expressive than one-shots, post has gone on for way to long and I don´t even have started how the obsession with mechanical outplays which mostly require quick reflexes fuck over older people.

I'll second that, tried a few of the more mobile & dangerous champions myself and while it's exciting for the moment, that's all it lasts for; it ends up with a dull and sour aftertaste, because I had such an advantage it became obvious they couldn't fight back.

Though to sum up the game feels like a third person CoD knock-off in technicolor lol.

  1. The only thing I had to say to people complaint about the tank meta was. Then why aren’t you playing Vayne Fiora Velkoz KogMaw Shyvana Varus __

You know. Champions specifically made to hard counter tanks. And do and did hard counter tanks
