Does Flat Magic Pen. and Flat Armor Pen. basically add to your AP or AD stat or is it percentage

wise damage depending on your opponent's resistances? I feel like it explains this nowhere so it's kind of hard to know what it actually does. Can someone care to explain?

Flat removes a "Set amount".

For instance you have 100 MR Target. You have Void staff and Sorc boots

Your effective Pen becomes 100 - 35% = 65 - 15 = 50.

50 Total Magic Pen. Also percent occurs first in the calculation always.

Best explanation right here.

Thank you!

However to elaborate reducing the MR or Armor of the enemy effectively INCREASES your damage by a percentage. But I thought the OP was looking for more of a generalization of how the Pen works...but others provided more context for OP.

It's effectively a % increase to DPS that is dependent on their total armor/mr value.

If they have 50 armor, and you have 10 armor pen, it's an increase of ~7.14%. If they have 100 armor, that 10 armor pen is an increase of ~5.26%

The lower the target's armor value, the more it increases your damage.

% pen is a % increase to damage that increases as the target's armor/MR is increased.

There are 4 types of armor/magic reduction. They are calculated in a specific order.

First the items that work for everyone. Items/skills like item 3001 and Kayle passive, work first where they cause a flat number off their specific stat like a debuff everyone benefits from Next are items/skills like item 3071 Wukong Q and j4 E which causes a % reduction off the specific stat like a debuff everyone benefits from

After on enemy reductions are calculated next are personal ones Third is items/skills like item 3036 item 3033 item 3035 item 3135 Battering Blows/Piercing Thoughts mastery and Darius e which reduce % of what remains after the first 2 are calculated like a bonus to your damage only you benefit from And 4th are items/skills like item 3020 item 3136 item 3151 item 3147 item 3142 item 3134 and Precision mastery that take a flat number off what remains like a bonus to your damage only you benefit from

What confuses people most is they think these are calculated all at once when really it is in this order. So if you were to say go up against a 400 armor Ammumu with maxed E Darius for 25% and had item 3036 item 3071 item 3142 and Battering Blows mastery for 7%. You wouldn't actually have a 102% armor reduction because item 3071 is calculated separately first. It would be 400-25% for 300 armor then 300-77% from the passives and item 3036 for 69. Then flat for -20 from Youmuu for 49 armor left.
