Most good Lee Sins use their Q after the rest of their kit because Q2 scales with the damage you've already done.

No, he said most good lee sins, so he was never saying a large group of players do, cuz most Lee sins are trash

I upvoted you because I agree with your premise, so don't hate me.

This is a TERRIBLE way to phrase this argument. What's much, much more important are all the reasons why he should have it taken away. Even as a steadfast proponent of the "stop the ward hopping, stop the madness," movement, I can think of good reasons why Lee should have this.

  1. He's currently balanced around it. You may hate it, but he isn't crazy OP.
  2. It's a great point of mastery for the champion. He has to manage his wards well to be able to use this ability when it counts, and there IS some mechanical skill involved in pulling a good ward hop move off.
  3. Lee Sin's mobility is a hallmark of the champ. He can hop to enemies and allies even without this, so it fits with his current style and vibe.

There are more arguments, many of which are spin-offs of this one, but you get the idea. It doesn't help to ask questions like this, imo. The ward hop is frustrating to play against, and I think it's worth the cost involved to remove it. That's the most important thing to keep saying.

NiceTryVi8 votes

Even is he isn't crazy op, he is definitely too strong right now. He has a 50% winrate, which seems fine, until you realize he has a 41.6% playrate. The main reason people want him nerfed is because of this. He defines the meta, and when he is in nearly half the games, he still pulls an even winrate, somehow. Imagine if a champ that was actually mechanically difficult, like Vayne, or as much as I hate to say it, Yasuo, was played that much? They would have winrates in the 30s. Lee has too much damage, has the wardhop as a free reposition, and can build warrior BC and then tank to become a huge meatsheild that can still ruin any squishies day in a blink of the eye lategame. When riot "nerfed" him, they should have reduced his ratio from 200% BAD to 150%, and that would have been fine. Removing the wardhop and making it allied champs or minions only would bring him off his "safe and deleting you at the same time" pedestal, and down to where he should be.

ModKnightsKemplar5 votes

I don't think he's too strong.

Just because someone has a high playrate doesn't mean that they are too strong. It's erroneous to compare to a champ like Yasuo; people have had a MUCH longer time to master Lee Sin, and it's completely POSSIBLE that all those people playing him have a TON of games on him. That's why people try to compare to play rate; it has to do with how much mastery they have on the champion.

In Lee Sin's case, though, he can have a high playrate without having a bunch of noobs playing him. Don't be deceived by the armchair statisticians; it's more complicated than they would have you believe.

I'm not saying I KNOW they are wrong, but I AM saying they don't have all the info. Riot does have that info, and we do not. That's important to understand.

Sun Wu Ryuumoku2 votes

Isnt op... but he's too strong atm. 50% winrate for 40 playrate on a champ whose require (in theory) a relative high skill.

But riot shouldn't nerf him anymore (except his ms), because lee is great thanks to the duration of most games (<30min and already decided in ten first min most of time). And most of jungler are weak atm ( cf last nerf on camp xp).

ModKnightsKemplar5 votes

Again, 50% win rate for 40% play rate doesn't mean much. That's statistically irrelevant.

You wouldn't want your favorite champ nerfed even though they were balanced just because people liked playing them, would you? That may or may not be the situation, but those two stats alone won't tell us. It is logically incorrect to connect that reality with those two stats.

Sun Wu Ryuumoku7 votes

winrate without playrate is irrevelant and reverse, but its statisticaly revelant if u use both.

You wouldn't want your favorite champ nerfed even though they were balanced just because people liked playing them, would you?

if my champ is balanced and many people play him :

  • his wr will fall... unless he's broken
  • i won't be able to play him if many pick him btw

I already explain why he's strong atm (i mean more than usual).

Not a Lee Sin defender most of the time, but today I guess I am.

I think it is mostly for the use of his ult. Let's compare it to Alistar's Headbutt, an ability with similar functionality. I am going to ignore the Pulverize-Headbutt combo for now since Lee doesn't have a comparable move involving his ult and it allows us to compare the abilities more effectively in the terms of how it relates to their mobility and CC. I will also ignore flash tricks for this since those aren't intrinsic to the kits and both have access to them equally.

Alistar can almost only use Headbutt defensively since it doesn't actually close the gap between him and his target. The exceptions to defensive use are hitting them into a wall or using a flanking maneuver to get around behind the enemy team (I don't count kicking a tank into the enemy team since that is primarily a peel thing). While Lee Sin could do both of these things without his ward hop, it is substantially harder for him to do so than it is for Alistar.

For the first case it is about the short term relative mobility, as in the relation of mobility between the aggressor and the victim. For both Alistar and Lee the only way they could control which side of an opponent they are on is by walking around them. While Lee is faster than Alistar, Alistar has an AoE hard CC that makes it impossible for the enemy to counter-maneuver. All Lee has is a decaying slow, which makes him unable to handle other mobile champions and makes it difficult to position around the enemy in a short time frame since they are still moving, albeit slowly.

The second case is more complicated because the mechanics are a little more messy. Lee Sin has longer range and a greater reward for pulling this off, but Alistar is more reliable. Lee has to hit a Q on the correct target and then go in and ult (assuming the enemy wouldn't let him walk up to their back line), but while doing this there is substantially more time to react than when Alistar does it. As soon as the Q hits the enemy should be aware of what Lee is trying to do, and if they are on top of things, they should then have a decent chance to stop him from doing it. Even if he pulls off the move, he is sacrificing himself for this and is likely dead almost immediately. Lee might build tank, but he usually needs a damage item or two to snowball his early game and even tanks can get shredded if they jump into an enemy team by themselves with no hard CC. Lee won't be able to dash to an ally to get out because the range on that just isn't that high, unless an ally is going in at the same time Lee is pulling his stunt. Alistar can survive doing this because he is ridiculously tanky and will then continue to contribute to the fight.

You might think, so what? What if Lee can't use his ult for offense? The thing is, Lee is an offensive champion. His only defensive tools he currently has in his kit are his ult, his W and Cripple. If you got rid of his offensive uses of his ult he is relegated to sit next to his carries to peel with his ult and provide a shield to them. He couldn't be an effective offense champion in the late game without the ward hop.

I don't like removing entire play styles from the game and Lee's current pattern of late game play is unique. While I am not a fan of Lee Sin in any stage of the game, I think that such a change would significantly change him to the point that he is not really the same champion anymore. As someone who played AD Sion, Mordekaiser and jungle Malzahar, I do not believe that effectively removing a champion/play style is a desirable outcome in all but the most offensive of cases.

TL;DR/Summary: Without his ward hop, Lee Sin's ult becomes very difficult to use as an offensive tool. This relegates Lee Sin to being a defensive champion later in the game, which changes the identity of the champion to the point of removal of the previous play style. Removing a play style is generally bad.

Rouwhorst2 votes

Good point, but I'd like to point out that the picture you create of alistar's combo is a bit on the bright side.

Alistar has an AoE hard CC that makes it impossible for the enemy to counter-maneuver.

You picture it as if his combo is as clean as Lee's, even with more reliability. You make the fair assumption the enemy wouldn't let you walk into the backline, yet that (or burning flash) is the only way Alistar can pull off a similar combo as Lee's. Initially you do point out that Alistar can almost only use headbutt defensively, but it is as if you ignore this later in your post.

As soon as the Q hits the enemy should be aware of what Lee is trying to do, and if they are on top of things, they should then have a decent chance to stop him from doing it.

Alistar suffers even more so of this problem, because his gapcloser (without flash) is even more telegraphed, which is just walking up to the target. And even though he is tanky, he generally does not want to face tank for that long to come into range of the enemy backline, which by the way probably moves quicker than he does.

Lee sin's ult indeed becomes a lot harder to use offensively, but it will surely still be used offensively in conjunction with Q and flash. But this makes him rely on flash which solidifies flash again, but this was already this case so... yeh

Putting his combo on a 3-minute cooldown might actually relieve some of people's frustration, because he legitimately burns something major. You picture solely a team fight situation, but I think most of people's problems come from situations where they are in a lane situation and they get ganked. in such situations lee sin can cover quite a large distance with his W, position behind you and kick you into the enemy laner, which of course ends fatal. But again in such situations Lee sin already uses flash so it is actually no too useful to restrict his offensive use of his ult to flash.

My proposition would be to lower the knock-up duration, so he will not be able to free hit his Q after his ult. Another thing to adjust could be the range on the knock-back, let it scale with something that allows him to do the same late game, but be less oppressive early game, scaling per ultimate level for example.

Name One good reason why X champion should have X ability: ------

Is kind of a stupid question to ask; He has the ability because it: 1: Synergizes with his kit really well 2: It makes for awesome Lee Sin insec plays, which feel fantastic. 3: Gives him mobility for escapes (He's a diver, he goes, and he bails) 4: It just goes along with his gameplay of being a mobile diver.

He has it cause it works well with his kit, makes for cools plays, and is a fun ability to use.

Thats why any champion has any of their abilitys, because it works well with their kit, it makes sense in their kit, and its fun to use.

You can't just name X reason for having X ability, there are many, Riot when making champions (At least now, Lee Sin has aged MUCH better then every single other champion of his time), doesn't just go okay "Lets put X, X, X, and X into this kit", not they go "Lets put X in cause, works well with X, which makes X even better".

I think the concern is he can hop to many things already without the need for wards. He can hop to teammates and I believe he can still hop to minions(?) i may be wrong on that one. Why should he be able to be so safe in 1v1's or small skirmishes? Take solo Lee 1v1 for example.. Losing health? Can shield AND life steal. Still losing? Can kick them the fuck away AND deal a good amount of damage. Did you start winning? Q>Q to come back in and deal another good amount of damage. Oh wait, still losing? Ward hop out.

He's insanely safe. Can pick and chose his fights easily. Winning? Engage more, slow them, flash in front of the and kick back to keep them from safety. Losing? See above. Has many options to get out of dodge.

Side note, I'm not a Lee hater. But at my elo; most Lee's are shit and occasionally i see the smurf or OTP. At higher elo? I can see him being a big problem if he knows what he's doing.

Guy Fox Teemo1 votes

"Why should he be able to be so safe in 1v1's or small skirmishes?"

Because thats what his kit is made for, he is an early game jungler who absolute shits on people if they fuck with him early, and falls off and just becomes a teamplayer late game with little damage

Yes, Lee does a lot, early on in the game, he's strong, he has a lot of options , but he falls off, and he falls off HARD, now this is a fact, not a hyperbole, or exaggeration, it is a hard set fact that Lee falls off incredibly late game.

He gets incredible early game potential, for a sub-par mid game, and a shit late game. THose are his trade offs for having one of the best early games in the game.

Aren't divers supposed to be a class of champions that can engage really well, but have to fight their way out, like Vi?

Lee sin just q's, e, r, then w's to safety.

WinTheWarOnPants5 votes

1: Synergizes with his kit really well

I Synergies with damn near every champs kit... I know i sure as fuk would like a ward hop on Evelynn

2: It makes for awesome Lee Sin insec plays, which feel fantastic.

Being cool isn't a valid reason when talking about game/champ health

3: Gives him mobility for escapes (He's a diver, he goes, and he bails)

This is a reason why he shouldn't have it. Divers don't get escapes Vi, Xin Zhao,Nocturne, Pantheon, Jarvan, Wukong, Warwick, Renekton,Elise, Hecarim, Lee Sin, Irelia, Aatrox, Evelynn, Diana(list courtesy of riot statikk). Notice anything in common with these champs? Literally none of them have escapes except lee... Unless you count incidental escapes like Heca ult and WW ult(which you shouldn't).

4: It just goes along with his gameplay of being a mobile diver.

Redundant. This is just a vaguer way of sating points 1 and 3.

Guy Fox Teemo3 votes

1: No it doesn't synergize well with eve, it in no way has anything to do with eve's kit in terms of her thematic and the way she plays. Shes not meant to be mobile, and shes not balanced around mobility.

2: Yes it is a very valid reason, they make champions to be fun, and interesting and fun ability that makes his kit feel fantastic, thematically and gameplay wise, is dam good reason to have it on his kit.

3: Pantheon, has the ability to tanks shots, Wukong bursts, and bails, quite easily, with the movespeed his ult gives him, or jumps to wave with e(Which there almost always is one if its an early game dive), Renekton... wtf are you talking about he has 2 dashes, Elise has cocoon in the air to immediately dodge tower shots, Irelia Q's to an enemy minon, Aatrox Passive, Evelynn is an old and wonky kit theres a reason she slated for a rework, Hecarims also really fast, Diana is an oddball in that she just gets out with being tanky, (Riots stated before they dont like this playstyle on her), and Warwick is kind of the same case as Diana, except thats what his kit is meant to do.

So out of the several divers you pointed out, 2 of them do have escapes (Renekton and Elise), Divers aren't meant to have an escape, they just need mobility to get out, which all of them do.

WinTheWarOnPants3 votes
  1. You really gonna tell an Eve main what would work on her? I'm not gonna take the time to make a case for her and every other champ in this game and how "wardhopping" would help them. just trust me when i say Eve would very much like to have a wardhop. "it in no way has anything to do with eve's kit in terms of her thematic and the way she plays." No shit? I don't remember anything about "the mistic magnetic power of wards that lee channels through his butthole" in his lore either... and if it wasn't in his kit right now it wouldn't be a part of the way her plays either.

  2. No it's not. If something is broken or unhealthy it doesn't matter if "it's fun to use". machine gun RekSai(urf mode) is fun as shit to play, but that doesn't mean shit about it being in the normal game because it's broken and toxic AF.(this is an exaggerated case to make a point*).

  3. Renekton "situationally"(very important) has 2 dashes, in order to get the second dash he has to hit an enemy with the first. It is most certainly not intended as an escape(hench why i said "incidental") though it is definitely the closest to acting as one(in very limited circumstances). Elise E is not an escape... it's a defensive/offensive tool used either to gap close for engage or dodge dmg. It's no more an escape than Lee's Q, panths dash, diana's ult, akali's ult, amumus Q, etc. Tl;dr "if you need an enemy to use your mobility, it's not an escape"

Let's not forget that removing his ability to wardhop WILL NOT remove his ability to use his W as an escape or engage for that matter. Since, being a jg he will much more often than not have an ally that he can use to engage or disengage with (champions OR minions).

Guy Fox Teemo3 votes

1: Yes I am, Eve may also want the ability to stun with AA's like braum, or be able do dodge abilities when she q's like master yi, or anything. But they don't make fucking sense on her kit at all.

2: it's not broken or unhealthy, that's your opinion. And your point of view. Just because YOU think something is bullshit doesn't mean everyone else thinks it is. Why should I be inclined to listen to you over someone lose when you give no reasons as to why it is bullshit other then hyperbolic statements and comparisons?

3: I very much do think it's an escape, in almost every case unless your balls deep diving from the back of your lane and waste the two dashes in just minions. And yes Elise's IS an escape , you jump dodge a lot of potential damage from tower and then run, you may get hit by 1 tower shot BUT SO WOULD LEE, except he doesn't have the option to dodge any of them.

Let's also not forget that Lees entire kit is balanced around him ward hopping and removing it would effectively force Riot to buff the SHIT out of him in damage and other areas. I would much rather have an interesting ability to make plays then too just get more bullshit damage that are just numbers on screen.

WinTheWarOnPants1 votes

This is pointless if you're just gonna ignore all the points i make, and argue with a straw man...

Guy Fox Teemo3 votes

Because your points are just biased hyperbolic statements.

"No its broken", why is it broken? You gave no reason as to why it's broken, or why it should be removed. You have zero valid arguments, and just go with "I think its broken, don't like it."

If you can come up with some valid points and reasoning as to why, its broken, other then "Cause bullshit", i'll be inclined to listen. I'm of the opinion that it promotes, fun and interesting gameplay, allows for cools plays on Lee Sins part, is fairly manageable by the enemy team, since you can see the where he places the ward and him jumping to it (So its quite telegraphed), it also has an incredibly long CD for an escape ability if you don't use it on champions (Double).

Lee Sin's kit is also balanced around ward hopping, which takes a huge chunk of his power budget, (without it , he couldn't do shit late game, as the rest of his abilites fall off besides E). Removing it would require a ton of work on Lee, which doesn't seem really worth the benefit, since the ability doesn't really cause any problems with his kit (People just find it annoying is about it)

WinTheWarOnPants1 votes

at least you're consistent lol I never said anything was broken...

and where does it say that lee is broken? since, you probably still won't get it i'll go ahead and tell you. It doesn't. "_**If **_something is broken or unhealthy..." is not a statement that anything specific is broken. It has not been determined either way. The case is being made, and IF it is broken then "being fun to use" is irrelevant.

but you would much rather twist my words in your head to mean what you want them too rather than have a discussion.

and heres what you said in REPLY: >No it's not. If something is broken or unhealthy it doesn't matter if "it's fun to use".

So yes, you implied that the ability was broken, after I implied that the ability was healthy, I'm not twisting your words, your just trying to come up with bullshit. If your going to say something, at least fking believe it, instead of acting as if you never said what you said.

Not using his W on a champ (that isn't himself) should put its CD at 20s, destroy the target if it's a ward, and lock Lee out of Iron Will.

Tik1154 votes

thing is, removing a broken mechanic which a champion is balanced around isn't a bad thing

Zed was balanced around the QSS cleanse because it use to kill his ult Vlad was balanced around Will of the Ancients And Riven became balanced around her animation canceling

removing those issues means Riot are not longer shoehorned into balancing around something other then a champions kit, so thats why should Lee have his Ward hop removed so that his kit can be balanced AROUND HIS KIT as opposed to balanced around a mechanic which arguably is uneeded given his kit as is

TotalJerk3 votes

It's not "broken". You can say it's unhealthy, overpowered, frustrating, or unfair, but it's not like ward hopping fundamentally breaks how the entire game is played in his favor.

MorgManBasher7 votes

Personally am fine with it, what I am not fine with is him being so disgustingly overpowered early game with his insta kills while also having insane utility on top of that.

He really just needs his numbers toned down and given more sustain damage in replace for his 100 to 0 burst so I don't want to shoot myself the first 20-30 minutes of the game.

I feel like ward hopping is a neat mechanic though, personally. Though it's kinda insane that he has ward hopping and his Q to get around AND a insanely low cooldown ult to knock people away making him the safest jungle in the game.

Yeah Riot refused to give "Stand Behind Me" a wardhop earlier when requested by a couple players, saying that it doesn't make sense to jump to the aid of a ward or something, but apparently it's perfectly okay for "Safeguard" to do it.

still there are other ways to nerf him than taking away his wardhop that can be used for playmaking.

imo his movement speed is the biggest problem. by lowering that he wouldn't be able to simply walk up to you easily and would be more reliant on his mobility spells, including Q.

the only reason why he can actually easily simply ward hop to you in the first place is because of his stupid base movement speed.

so much power of him actually comes from his high base movement speed that i simply think -5 on that would do the job.
