To all the summoners who complain about their rank...

I have heard so many people complain about the LoL Elo Ranking system, and to be honest, it has aggravated me to the point there I feel I should use some of my invaluable time to write about it (Up vote if you agree).

  1. Why do you even complain? Telling the world that the ranking system sucks doesn't change your status on the ladder at all. Winning games does. And why do you complain about "Elo Hell". (Honestly they should really get the Myth Busters for this one cus I mean come on)

  2. I myself am in Bronze 1. But I don't complain about Elo hell because I know that I need to work on pretty much everything in the game. Part of understanding the ranking system is realizing your skill. I for example have average CSing, My warding is minimum, my team fighting is no where near great, I'm not great at ganking when I play jungle either. Half the reason I don't believe in Elo hell is because I know if I was any better I would be able to climb.

  3. Maybe you aren't meant to move higher on the ladder, ever think of that? If you cant do some of the basic things in league that I mentioned earlier, why should you move up? Here I go preaching about skill again, but its true! Pros deserve to in the LCS because the mistakes they make are very little. If you watch the games live on twitch.tv at all, you will know that many times first blood doesn't even go down until 10-15, even 20 minutes into the game! If you look at your last game where you tried to duel that Fiora before minions even spawned, leading to your long and pretentious death, please don't be surprised. (Sorry for salt, trying to make a point)

If you have read this far, thank you. Please, by all means, feel free to comment your opinions. Up vote if you agree. I will make edits if I find any other reason (Mostly coming from commenters) on why complaining about your rank is waste of time and doesn't make you a better player overall. Thanks :D

I agree that if you have higher skill than your current elo you will end up climbing. But I do believe that Elo Hell exists.

If you think about how the system for ranking up works it actually causes "Elo Hell".

To get into your promo's, most of the time you need to win 2-3 matchs in a row, then you need to win 2 of the next 3 matchs so 4-6 games winning at least 4 times. Most people climb with a win ratio of about 55%, People that have a skill set many tiers above their current tier have a win rate of +70% Lets say you won 2 games to get into your series and have 55% win rate, that means you will win 3.3 out of 6 games on average. Which leaves you with 1.3 out 3 which gives you less than a 50% chance of winning your series even though you have a 55% win rate.

Same senario but with a 70% win rate now you win 4.2 games out of 6 on average. Which leaves you with 2.2 out 3, which is pretty good odds of ranking up

Now the 3 win to promo's senario 55% win rate .3 out 3 games, you have almost no chance of ranking up. 70% win rate 1.2 out of 3 games a little less than 50% chance of ranking up.

Of course there are many other factor and this is just estimated values but you can see how people who are maybe in B2 and deserve S4 are going to have a very difficult time climbing.

My point is that while being skilled enough will eliminate "Elo hell" it does still exist.

1st off, thank you for the reply.

2nd off, you have a good point. I myself kind of see bronze and silver as the same thing, both have nearly the same amount of issues when it comes to player behavior. And with the difference between b2 and s4, I do not see a huge improvement in skill. A lot of the time I have friends who say that they really deserve silver after they get placed in bronze3 and below. Although there isn't much of a skill increase, I DO believe that it takes maturity and the ability to be a team player (which in most cases they don't have). This includes things like afk, mid or feed, etc. That is the difference for those 2 levels (bronze and silver) is how you act as a person in queue and in-game. I totally understand your reasoning though. Thanks so much for the reply, it is a good one at that.

It's a topic that frustrates me and I have put a lot of thought into why I don't like and ways to possibly fix it.

Personally I have gotten placed in bronze 3 or lower every season and these last two I have climbed up to s4, in truth I am probably only 1-2 ranks below where I should be considering that I am currently at a 55% win rate.

I feel the new ranked system should fix some of the problems you said. We will see.

It will make it a bit better in the sense that I'm with friends but it doesn't address the the main issue(that i see) of promo's being an arbitrary set of matchs that you are statistically more likely to lose because you have to win immediately before them.

I haven't read up on this "promo helper" that they are adding but I still want my solution:

  • Promo's start once you reach 70lp max of 110lp
  • any 2 out of 3 games you win while in promo's will cause you to rank up
  • any 3 out of 4 for going up big tiers(bronze-silver-gold-etc)

This means that as long as you stay in the promo range, every game you play counts towards ranking up, and the more games you play in your promo's the less effect luck has on you ranking up.

I would say that the reason im not climbing is because im where i am suppose to be but when my teammates go 0/12 before 10 minutes or we are already protecting our nexus turrets at 15min and the only thing that tells me is Riot thinks i should lose for no reason. All i learn is i can't carry my teammates, not so much that i suck or that i belong where i am. Its impossible to tell where i am suppose to be when i look up my fellow Silver I's on my team and see they consistently go 0/10 in all their games... So its hard to know if its you or if its bad Matchmaking, i say bad Matchmaking, its impossible that i am the same rank as some of these people... either rank me up or rank them down, i honestly dont care which but the inconsistency of skill levels in Silver elo needs to be fixed.
