I don't know if it's been properly said yet, so thank you Riot for Runes Reforged

Runes have historically been one of the most embarrassingly grindy parts of the game. They punished new players for not being around long enough, and they indirectly broke the timeless f2p game rule of not letting people buy game power (even if you couldn't spend RP on them, they made it really hard to progress without spending rp on champions.

You've successfully eliminated one of the last truly difficult to rebut arguments about how greedy you are. You've made it easier for people to level, lowered the power curve as you level (by eliminating tiers of runes, and the slow unlock of rune and mastery slots, and the need to buy runes) and you've done it in a way that directly sacrifices your potential revenue in favor of making the game more fair for everyone.

Not only did you do that, but you're providing unique rewards for those who have historically spent a lot on runes. I know the rates aren't too impressive, and people are grumbling, but when most games make grindy content less grindy they tell those that did the grind to suck it up and appreciate that it makes the game better, and I think that's fully justified. You went a step further and sacrificed more of your potential revenue to make a good-faith effort to be nice those you knew you would never be able to fully satisfy, and I think that shows a genuine desire to make your playerbase happy.

Runes Reforged hasn't shipped yet, and yes, I am fully convinced it will destabilize the balance of the game for months. And yes, it's been a long time coming. I've been playing this game (poorly) since Season 2, and people have been asking for runes to be eliminated/cheapened/made free since before I joined, because it was honestly an antiquated, unfair system that really dragged down the game as a whole, and specifically the new player experience. But you finally fixed it!

So again, thank you so much for all the efforts you've made to improve he game for everyone. Not just the vets, not just the noobs, not just the pros or the high elo solo queue or the duo queues or the 5-man parties, not just the Lee Sin or the Yasuo or the Sejuani players, the Anivia or the Morgana players, the....the....sighs the Zed...players....Not just the tanks or the supports or even the adcs... that's one of the better aspects of your company and approach to this game. You may stumble and fumble and make mistakes, but your ultimate goal is to make a game that's playable and enjoyable for everyone, even baddies like me who just need to get good and stop whining about pubstomp champions. And I think that's beautiful.

Now make a single player/co-op campaign so I can teach people the game without thrusting them face-first into the horrors of low-level norms!

You mean custom games?

No, that's why I specified a campaign. Mobas share more with RTS games than their roots, they also share a high skill floor for micro, strategy, and game knowledge. RTS games typically offset this with a robust single-player campaign, sometimes with co-op available. Even though anyone used to playing against people will wipe the floor with anyone that's only played a campaign, it's still a massive first step in teaching people the basics of a game.

Bot games aren't structured enough to actually teach people anything, actual tutorials aren't fun enough or extensive enough, and playing against other people teaches you nothing but how to lose for a very long time. A campaign would help fill in the gaps.

Maybe like arcade type 1v1 midlane no jungle creeps beating bots. Get some Exposition after the winning a fight and they get progressively harder.

I'm super depressed they are taking runes away. Making them free is great, sure, I don't think anyone is arguing that. Being able to change your early game stats for laning phase was a lot of fun to mess around with. Hopefully runes reforged will still keep the same feel of customization you get. Only time will tell.

I feel you. Personally, I'm unconvinced that the new system will be superior for customization and for gameplay, but I honestly don't care. Anything is better than runes that cost IP.

I will say that historically junglers have been locked into specific rune pages to allow them to clear, and the fact that you had to choose between a base level of armor/mr to not be deleted by a mage/assassin/diver's qwe or the utility granted by mana regen/hp regen/CDR was a little wonky.

I mean mid mages in particular had to choose between AP (which let them waveclear on top of the fighting power) CDR (which allowed them to scrap in a combat-heavy early game) or Mr (which let them not get insta deleted at level 6 by Syndra/lux/Orianna) always felt poorly designed.

But seriously, making them finally free is such a huge step, I can't overstate it.
