Easy tips for managing Cho'Gath

A lot of people seem to be having a hard time with Cho'Gath right now. I'm not gonna say that he isn't hilariously overtuned, but there are some things that will always make him sad regardless of how high his numbers are.

In terms of champ picks, obviously percentage hp damage is good game him, but skillshot mages and zone controllers are ridiculous. People like Morg, Lux, Brand, Xerath, Vel, etc, they obviously can't burst him down once he has his items, but he gets top big to dodge their skillshots, making it trivial for them to control him in teamfights-as long as you keep aware of his flash-ult and his q, he can't do anything. Morg also has her e which helps manage his q, brand passive helps wear him down, and vel can poke him repeatedly and wear through his house with his passive.

People like Vel, Anivia, Heim, Malz, and Zyra are also quite effective against him. Their zone control helps keep his team at bay while he gets stick in their dps abilities, and their repeated cc helps keep him from closing the gap as long as they don't eat a Q. Slows also make it pretty easy to keep away from him even if he lands a q, as his base movespeed is so low. Terrain is also especially strong again him, as he has to slowly waddle all the way around it.

Vayne is, for obvious reasons, his hardest counter. If you haven't played Cho vs Vanyne you don't know the meaning of suffering. Exacerbated when she buys qss.

Melees that I have found effective for controlling him include Jarvan, Zac, and anyone that can kill him early and snowball the game out of control.

Non champion specific advice:

  • Keep track of his ulti, his melee dueling is pretty trash without it up and he's heavily incentivised to use it on minions.

  • It's pretty standard to lead his Q by putting it slightly behind your target so that they walk into it, you'll have a lot of success sidestepping it. It's also pretty easy to anticipate, he basically has to use it to fight people that don't jump on him and to peel those that do.

  • His W no longer follows you so a well timed dash or even melee-range sidestep can avoid it.

  • A big part of his new power is that his e slows and helps him land qs, be ready for that.

  • Stoneplate-Ult combo is devastating but telegraphed, if you aren't cc'ed you can usually just walk out of range while the Stoneplate-Ult animation goes off

  • Repeated slows make it really hard for him to do anything other than q, consider buying Rylais and cdr or frozen mallet. Liandries and botrk are other obvious pickups

  • His lane sustain is crazy, but he gets much more hp than Mana. If you can force him to use abilities to farm early, he will run oom.

Anyway, hope this helps out a little bit against Cho, feel free to add anything I missed.

Cho can e Vayne once amd eat her......

They should of never removed the ability to reduce his stacks on death.

The only counter is to kite back and poke.

How does he get in melee range of her? He can't actually flash-w-e-ult smoothly enough to prevent retaliation, and her e has a much shorter cd than his flash, on top of which her ulti prevents him targeting her with ult, and her q can easily dodge his q, and, these days, his w. Cho literally can't touch Vayne without outside help unless she seriously misplays.
