Can I get some tips agaisnt Illaoi

For the past few weeks, I have been running up against an increasing number of Illaoi players in both ranked and normals, and each time I drift back and wish it was a Quinn pre nerf instead. Even when I win against her in a game it feels like a complete uphill slog, dependent on me to keep moving around to avoid her hentai while she wails on me, my vessal, or both. This past game I was a Malphite Rocking (heh heh) 300 armor and I got melted everytime i tried to cs or to trade. It took our whole team just to deal with her, not even Nasus Elicits that kind of hard work and labor to deal with. Can I please get some tips to deal with this POS? It feels like everytime I go agasint her, as a tank or early game bully or hypercarry I lose no matter what I pick into her.

She can't spam her abilities in early or she'll run out of mana quickly. She usually doesn't buy mana (read: IBG) items till later if at all.

Her Q and E are both slow telegraphed skillshots. Her E does not go through minions. She's incredibly weak pre-level 6 to ganks, pressure her as much as you can then. If you get your Spirit pulled out, pre-6, I'd just fight her and dodge her Q when she tries to hit you both. For each instance of damage she takes, the Spirit will be out one second shorter.

If she ults, just immediately back off. Don't fight her. Just leave. Unless you have some form of CC to stop her.

Few suggestions I can give:

  1. Illaoi does not have good mana regen, so she can't spam her abilities during early game. If you play a champion that doesn't need resources you'll be able to out trade her since her damage comes from her abilities and not her AAs. If she's low or OOM that would be a good time to go in and harass since she wont be able to respond well.
  2. Her Q and E are very slow moving abilities and easy to dodge. Especially her vessel. Think of it like a Blitz grab. Just stay behind minions and she'll have a difficult time doing easy damage. Her W is okay damage, but doesn't do much without the use of her tentacles.
  3. Speaking of tentacles. Always be aware of that shit. Never blindly engage her near a wall where he has some tentacles set up or you'll be asking for a bad time. When playing against her you really need to keep track of your positioning so you don't get caught between her and her wall of tentacles.
  4. Her only strength is during the laning phase. Outside of that Illaoi is VERY weak and struggles to keep up. She has no gap closer, no CC (other than a measly slow), and can't output damage unless she can set up a fight perfectly near her horde of tentacles. If you can bully her hard enough out of the laning phase, she'll fall off super quick and wont be able to make a comeback unless you keep fighting her in a small lane.
  5. If you become a vessel just focus on dodging her tentacles. They're very easy to dodge as long as you don't stand still or sit near walls. Remember, the tentacles can only spawn on objects like walls or towers, so as long as you stay aware of those you'll be safe.
  6. Which brings us to her ult. It will not work well unless you engage on her while she has tentacles nearby, or she uses it while you're both near a wall. Most of her damage comes from said tentacles, so avoiding those prevents her from dishing out damages or becoming a threat.

I hope that helps or makes sense. She's honestly not that OP or strong, she's just good against players who don't know her kit. Once you know how she works she's practically useless outside of lane. And the recent nerf to her vessel makes her damage output less and her threat even smaller (doesn't last as long as it used to and you can shorten the time by hitting her).

Trust me she's not that difficult to lane against. If anything Nasus is a natural counter to her because he can get Q stacks off of her tentacles. It's pretty crazy how easy he can shut down an Illaoi.

Good luck :)

If you want counters: heavy mobility champs like Irelia are great, ranged champions like Kennen do well, and other juggernauts like Darius can make it a close match up at least.

Odds are high she will max either Q or E, E means more vessel damage and Q means more overall damage.

E is highly telegraphed and actually fairly narrow, not too bad to dodge. If you can avoid being in a straight line with the vessel, you can fight her while she has it. She's forced to either: focus on you or the spirit, obviously if she ignores you, she loses the trade.

Clear tentacles. Enough said.

If she R's, run away. It's nearly impossible to fight an ulting Illaoi if she has death's dance, so just play it on the safe side and run.

Late game she's in the same boat with Darius: loves to 5v5, can't find an easy way in. That's your advantage. As long as you zone her and poke her down, it's hard for her to actually do anything. She can be a beast at sieges, so do your best to dodge E's during those.

Illaoi MOVE!

Pantheon goes well against her. Teemo if you play right. Lulu destroys her so hard it isn't funny.

I like to go Galio as you are always out ranging her and hardly need to use your melee to last hit. If you do you can force her away easy if you shield your self and just trade with her.

Anything with range tends to work, as long as you watch for the E's from her you should be good, early game getting hit by a Q doesn't give her back as much Health as she would want, and costs her more mana as @Nep2une said. So you can just force her to waste mana by dodging her moves.

Split pushing is another good way to wreck her day. If your team is coordinated you can ask them to push one lane as 4 and you just stay top and push it so hard she can't leave. Illaoi is good at 1v1 sure, but she really does best in team fights, so she wants to join her team as soon as possible. If you force her to stay in lane your team has a higher chance of winning the 4v4 trades compared to 5v5 with you and her there. Push so hard it makes 2 people come to you and then your team can win the other lane fight or push them self.

Most Illoai players will give up pretty quick when stuck in lane and will roam or try other things as they just get bored dealing with you over and over.

ALSO GET A FUCKING MORTAL REMINDER. Seriously people. This item destroys heal based champions, and she is one of them, she relies heavily on her tentacles landing on champions for health back, if you just half that amount she will die in more than 90% of her trades against team and solo. item 3123 item 3033 These items. Or Morello if you are a mage. This will shut her down early in any trade, so use it for crying out loud.
