Morellonomican and its lost Identity

JainaProudgurl··31 votes·3,485 views

I'm writing this post cause I'm feeling a little weird about the new Morellonomican (Well relatively new, I guess :P)

So as we know, every item in-game is built to have its own uses and appeal. You build Infinity Edge to get that extra 50% Crit Damage, and you build Mercurial Scimitar if your an AD having problem with CC. Do you see where this is going?

With the mid season mage update, they changed A LOT of items and added a few more. With this, they changed something drastic: Mana. It used to be where if you have mana problems, Athene's or Tear was what you were to lean to, but now with the changes to Athene's, with an exception of a few mid laners, its useless to buy for your normal common mid laners such as Ahri or Annie. So now your left with two items at your disposal: Morellonomicon or Archangels. The alure of Archangels is a mana based build. Because of this, most characters do not fit this archetype because they don't spam abilities enough, however there IS another reason. So now we look at Morellonomicon. Morellonomicons "Unique" identity is supposed to be an item that you build if the enemy is sustaining using heals. However, its stats make it lose its identity. At 100 AP, 400 Mana, 20% CDR, Grievious Wounds, and then its "restore 20% of your mana per kill or assist" it makes it a great item.

So lets do a quick analysis, starting with gold efficiency. Gold Efficiency is a term used to describe how much your paying for each stat using the base values provided from simple items that provide that single stat. So for example, to calculate the base cost of AP, we would take amplifying tomb and take its 20 AP and divide it by its cost, 435g. this makes each point of ap roughly worth 21.75g. We can then plug in these values in other items to find roughly what the cost of CDR, Mana, and other stats are.

So after you do all this, you come with a gold efficiency for Morellonomicon roughly 113% WITHOUT the passives. In comparison, Athene's Unholy Grail is at 99% gold efficiency, while Archangels is only 73% Gold Efficient unless you stack mana items, finally reaching 100% efficiency at 1300 mana from items.

And this is WITHOUT the passive. Archangels automatically loses because its gold efficiency was calculated WITH the passives. And if we included Athene's passives, the efficiency goes up to 121%, but because of its new unique identity, its useless on most normal mid laners.

In conclusion, what I'm saying is that Morellonomicon has lost its identity as a item solely built to counter people with high sustain, now its used as an item solely for its mana, many people forgetting its intended use. Now this doesn't seem like a problem, but being a support main for close to two years now, I prefer supports where I can actively sustain my team through a teamfight, such as Janna, Nami, or Soraka. But with Morellonomican being built on EVERY mid laner, it makes it hard for me to do so. And it would be one thing if I KNEW they built it because of sustain, but I guarantee that is not the case in 90% of the games (seeing as i'm only in silver, most people (no offense!) do not have the smarts to counter build against a support). Also, proof of this can be seen whenever you play a game without any sustain characters at all. I know for a fact that whenever I play a game, the first item I see mid laners rush is Morello, it being used as a font for mana, high AP, and quite a bit of CDR.

So what is everyone elses thoughts on this? Place it in the comments below! =D

Actually, Morellonomicon was at no point in the past THE item that you get vs healing, it always was mostly a good agresive option for cdr while solveing some mana issues. The GW always just was iceing on the cake and only sometimes the reason to pick it up. When it first got introduced, it was about the only AP+cdr option asides from dfg, which had it's focus on the active, and nashors, which focused on AS. Actually, morellos being the go to cdr option for mages is back to it's roots, as it was about the only real choice befor athene's came in. And even after athene's, it was usually either athene's or morellos depending on what was stronger at the time as go to rush item on nearly any mid. Also, there are plenty items that are generally strong and thus core to specific classes rather than beeing niche. Complayning about just morellos is kinda wiered, the entire item system would need to be reworked if we truely want all niche items, which would come at a price though.

JainaProudgurl3 votes

JosephAngelo explained it better than I did.

The problem with Morello's is it has the stats of a general item but included in this item is grevious wounds which gives it a characteristic of a niche item. I believe what is being argued here is Morello's should be designed as a niche item that is built specifically because the enemy's healing is an issue that needs to be addressed and the player is willing to sacrifice some base stats for a passive that justifies the trade-off; this trade off happens between mortal reminder and Lord Dominik's Regards. This trade off does not happen with Morello's. The stats are so good that many mid laner build it and when the enemy is healing enough to make it an issue, there is rarely a dicision to make because most of the time every builds Morello's anyway, even if the enemy was not healing. And for this point I agree.

Vistha Kai2 votes

Well, they brought it on themselves continously nerfing item 3174.

So it was a problem they created and instead of fixing it, they nerfed Athene's one last time and then created an even bigger problem.

DraygenBiscuit7 votes

Morello can also be used to stop healers.

JainaProudgurl10 votes

Yeah, but what im saying is that its not being used to stop healers. Yes, thats the intended purpose, but 90% of people build it just for mana.

Spoofghoul5 votes

not really surprising with it being the only true mana option for most champions It gives everything and none of the other options can really compete 100!! ap 20%!! cdr and mana sustain in 1 item, athenes used to be the tanky more sustainy competitor but its gone now. So yea 1 option left so i guess we buy that first as mage

Athenes used to be more efficient for mana sustain by a huge margin. In fact, mid laners used to either go Athenes or Tear + RoA and you only build morello if you needed 40% cdr or the grevious wounds for someone like Mundo. However RIot decided that no item should give infinite mana and solid damage and nobody has built Athenes since, that was the onset of double morello meta for mid lane.

Phoenix Kotori 1 votes

Here's the thing, it wasn't original a niche anti-heal item it was a general AP/CDR/Mana regen aside from changing to Mana it still fills the original role it was designed for.

It didn't get GW until late 2012.

morellonomicon has basically always been a first item for anyone who wants CDR, vs rod of ages for people who don't care about CDR, and then a few weird exceptions here or there. that hasn't changed at all. it had mana regen before now it just has mana, that's not really a big shift. and while it has a grievous wounds effect, that was very very rarely why people picked it over another item, and that also hasn't changed.

you could argue that maybe the grievous wounds effect should've never been on this particular item?

JainaProudgurl2 votes

Okay, history lesson for people.

On May 1st 2012, a grievous wounds passive was added to Morellonomicon. These were the days of DFG ruling the rift, but it was also a time when sustain champs were so powerful that they needed some uniform way to counter them for mages, cause tanks could get to the point where a Leblanc would burst them and they'd return to full health in seconds, or heal up using one of the many healing supports, sustain ults, and other things.

Back then, if you wanted CDR, you built Athene's and Ionian Boots over Morello, cause together they gave way more CDR and mana regen, so the only reason was to buy Morello was to counter sustain.

Proof can even be seen if you look at statistics. Before patch 6.9, Morello was only used in 0.12% of all matches, meaning that Morellonomicon was only bought in certain circumstances. After however, this changed. Morellonomicon is now built on AP mid laners 83% of the time, and almost always as the first item, because its new mana passive restores a ludicrous amount of mana.

EROTIC RAID BOSS5 votes

lol what, I'm pretty damn sure I saw Morello way more than athenes even before 6.9. I don't know about back in the day, but I know last year Morello was very very common

Perfectly written. Well done.

Kuiper Cliff3 votes

It seems as though you are deciding the identity of Morello based on your own personal experience and then cherry picking scenarios and parts of the item's history in order to validate your opinion. I've only been playing since season five, but from what I have gathered, the item has been the central hub of early offense given it's access to cdr/mana/ap stats with an added GW passive just to give a bone to mages (who don't even need the passive).

Seeing as the massive majority of mages inherently are built towards burst as opposed to long drawn out combat I don't really see the GW passive making a massive difference in fights anyway, which is probably why GW doesn't receive its' own niche item. Such a creation would probably be pushed aside with ohmwrecker due to how rarely it would actually be useful, so I understand why it is slapped onto a core item.

As far as using gold efficiency to argue why Morello is taken so often I think it is actually a moot argument at this point given the way that Mage itemization was reworked so as to unify and eliminate redundency across the AP items. Seraphs/Morello/Athene's were molded to specifically fit wildly different kinds of mages and should not be considered interchangeable in my opinion. (really, the mages who benefit from seraphs are the ones who would even need the GW passive. You could make an argument for the passive in that regard, but you opted to simply slam Morello because you simply don't like the identity that Riot created the item to fill).

Just a few thoughts :P

You buy Morrelo for mana sustain. The 20% mana restore lets you be out on the field for a lot longer than otherwise.

JainaProudgurl2 votes

That's exactly my point: Your buying it for the mana sustain, not its intended purpose, to counter healers.

It Hertz When IP4 votes

Sounds like the solution is to straight-up remove the GW passive and put it on a whole new item.

NineTailedMystic4 votes

Except unlike Executioner's it has the requirement of getting the target down to 40% or less HP.

From the 6.9 notes: "Morellonomicon is fully embracing its identity as an aggressive mage item..." That is its identity. Not to counter healers like your supports, or Vlad and Mundo because they aren't the intended recipients of the Grievous Wounds since most mages won't get them to 40% to proc the effect anyways compared to Executioner's where it applies on any physical damage and at any health threshold. In order to be aggressive they can't have their damage just healed off by Heal or Soraka.

item 3003 isn't all that gold efficient yes... however that's because its a stacking item... when it is stacked item 3040 it is quite efficient

http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Seraph's_Embrace Seraph's Embrace is 122.34% gold efficient, without the active. Seraph's Embrace gold efficiency is further increased by 2.1% for every 100 mana obtained (excluding its own mana).

at level 18 max mana is between 750 - 1500 which increases the gold efficiency by 15.75% - 31.5% So at most (with no other mana items) Seraph's Embrace is 153.84% gold efficient

(and it also has the active which gives up to 650 shield more if other mana items are built)

GerAvos2 votes

What do you mean by lost identity? Morello's identity is to give a lot of AP and CDR.

XxxLumberJackxxX2 votes

Yes. Morellonomicon does way too much and is a very lazy item. I've hated it since the mage update. Its mandatory on half of all aps for the wrong reasons

All Skillzz2 votes

old moreelo was 80 ap 20% cdr 100% mana regen for 2200g i think it was before the change. i rushed it on ap ezreal everytime an just spam W people for 350 hp by lvl 9 lol. back then sheen gave 25 ap and was better than it was now. so sheen + morello rush on ap ez was pretty devastating.

Who wants a can of Morello's?

arrowhead21k2 votes

Nobody ever used Morellonomicon for the grievous wounds. Since it only worked when the enemy was low, it's too unreliable. It wouldn't make much of a difference if RIOT got rid of the grievous wounds passive. RIOT made it pretty clear that Morello is not a niche item.

Vistha Kai2 votes

I always considered Athene vs Morello a balanced argument.

Morello was the item you got cheaper, with better combat stats. Then Athene was the more expensive item, trading AP for MR and a better mana regen.

To this day I can't wrap my head around this idiotic idea of, basically, removing Athene's from the game and making Morello the only choice for APs using mana.

Well, for that matter the whole MYMU was a complete disaster for me. For example slapping CDR on Abyssal Scepter. Why? It used to be a defensive/aggressive option against other APs, but it was just the raw stats. Now you lose exactly nothing getting it, even gaining, because the other guy who is most likely more mana-reliant can't get any MR, so you are dealing true damage to them.

AP itemization went to complete shit. If choices before were bad, now there are none.

VoraciousX2 votes

I miss old Athenes.....It was such a good item to defend against AP burst and keep your mana up at the same time. Now it's only for heal bots >>;

archangels is incredibly efficient. it costs 3100 gold. gives you 150 ish ap fully stacked and 1000 mana. and a shield active and a passive the refunds your mana cost on abilities by 25%.

on champs who have HIGH mana cost abilities (like lux) this item is very underrated. (it effectively educes her E mana cost from 130 > 100 which is huge.

It's build path is nice with a NLR and tear as well. I mean. the item is so good.

and uh nomicon has not lost its identity as a grievous wounds item for mages. most good players will still build this vs vlad/swain/volibear/mundo type champions.

Nomicon honestly got a lot better. it doesn't feel bad to rush. before Nomicon would basically make you a bit weaker earlier for the sake of mana regen/cdr. now you get ap, mana, and cdr. its the perfect rush item. lost chapter is also an amazing early item as it gives you plenty of sustain in lane.

I love what they did with the mana items. before it was Athenes or nomicon and mostly whichever one was more efficient now you have meaningful choices.

Tear to play the long game, Nomicon for early pressure, and Catalyst for sustain/scrappy trading with an eye towards being a bit tankier. The items are all around better. You can go Tear alone now and build other items because cdr is everywhere as well. you arent pigeonholed into athenes or nomicon anymore if you want cdr. the mage update missed out a lot on the mages themselves, but the item side of it was perfect.

EROTIC RAID BOSS3 votes

you don't need more than the mana Morello offers on lux, its not worth sacrificing early game damage or wave clear unless you have sky high mana costs like cass or anivia

Vallalan2 votes

nomicon in my experience of playing lux just isnt enough to spam in a siege which is what a poke mage wants to do. the mana refund from archangels combined with nomcion gives lux lower mana cost a big mana pool.

Alistair341 votes

I main her and from my experience Morellonomicon definitely provides enough Mana for the laning phase and afterwards (especially since you get Mana back on Assists/Kills).

I tried the Tear build but it felt horrible because I sacrificed both my early game damage (which enabled my opponent to pressure me a lot) and my CDR. Lux has very high cooldowns on her basic abilities and since Q is basically your only tool to escape you really want it to be up as much as possible.

When sieging it's important to make each spell count. Don't just mindlessly throw out Q's and E's. There's no use throwing your spells onto their tank when there's their ADC or their Midlaner right next to him. If you use your spells correctly you can kill one of their squishies when sieging and get Mana back from Morello's passive.

TL;DR: You sacrifice too much (= Early Game Damage + CDR) when building a tear. When sieging, target squishies and get Mana back from Morello's passive.

Vallalan1 votes

i dont build tear early. i dont b uild nomicon either. I go double dorans > luden's echo for early game pressure.

from there I go tear > seraphs. I go tear solely for mana refund passive. don't even care if it stacks. the mana refund passive is insane value on lux. and the double dorans is enough mana regen to get you through lane phase.

Luden's is too good as a rush item imo.

I undertsand why people rush nomicon. its teh perfect item for lux, but I like to get kills early.

Alistair341 votes

I agree that Luden's is a pretty good item to rush. Flat 100 magic damage (+ AP scaling) is quite powerful early. I sometimes rush it first too (even if that means I have to manage my Mana better until I get Morello).

I do think Tear is viable. It's just different. I guess it really depends on your playstyle. I can get early kills with Morello as well.

Lux cant build tear because she would be losing cdr and miss her powerspike at 6. She also desperately needs cdr, which she cant get from any core item except zhonyas. tldr dont buy tear on lux

Evewynn1 votes

I'd build it even if it didn't give mana. It's 100 AP and 20% CDR, there is no other item that gives those stats. The mana and regen passive just make it too good to pass up.

The fact that it applies grievous wounds essentially does not matter to me. Of course I get it more often if the enemy team has a swain or Mundo or something, but it's a crazy item even if it doesn't counter anyone.

Also, why can't you get it if mid already does? That's just more opportunity to apply it, and the stats alone warrant a purchase.

JainaProudgurl2 votes

The fact that it applies grievous wounds essentially does not matter to me.

That's what I'm trying to say. When a niche item isn't being used because of its niche, it now becomes a mainstream item that lost its niche. Such was the thought of the old sidekick super duo, Malady and Nashor's Tooth. The Malady + Nashor's Tooth combo was SO good, that most ADCs that had ANY ap scaling built it. AP Ashe and Varus were both incredibly viable back then, and could be seen in matches far and wide because it went from being niche items, that were supposed to be used on like Teemo and Kayle, to mainstream items that everyone used. It got so bad, that they actually REMOVED Malady from the game and reworked Nashor's Tooth so that it became a niche item again.

Blue Moon Wolf1 votes

Okay, something I just noticed about item 3165 that I need cleared up. the passive says "magic damage" applies GW, so does that just mean ability damage only or does the magic damage from aa's count as well?

Julanus2 votes

When dealing magic damage, it applies Grievous Wounds. This means Grievous Wounds will apply for each tick of damage Teemo deals through his poison, as well as through auto-attacks with item 3115 or item 3091.

Contrast this to item 3151 or item 3116, both of which apply their effects through casting spells.

Though the burn from Liandry's can also trigger Morellonomicon's Grievous Wounds.

Dengeden1 votes

Morellonomicons "Unique" identity is supposed to be an item that you build if the enemy is sustaining using heals.

Which was lost right around the time Athene's was no longer the go-to 20% cdr item. Preseason 5, iirc. Before that it was never built and laughably useless as an anti-sustain item too. It certainly didn't work against solo lane Raka.

Now this doesn't seem like a problem, but being a support main for close to two years now, I prefer supports where I can actively sustain my team through a teamfight

Sustain is toxic. Riot doesn't like you.

Gold efficiency is more of a general stat that doesn't take into account how well the champions' kit meshes with the stats given.

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

More of double standards; marksmen sustain all the time.

Dengeden1 votes

Before that, they need to finish their double full damage combos or be called Vayne. Furthermore, they're underleveled which makes them more squishy aaaaaand they can't build defensive stats.

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

Not really, once one gets a lead they don't require much more damage to keep instakilling their opponent. Go ahead and tell me how a bloodthrister's shield makes them weaker.

Dengeden1 votes

It doesn't Crit and has no Ar Pen. Duh. Go ahead and build BT before finishing IE/ER/BC, have fun doing negative damage and getting either ignored or blown up regardless of your paltry 100 HP shield.

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

So you admit to being a liar; you said before they can't build defensive stats, but show you know they can get items with shields. They get plenty of damage & defence, try it out since you're such a fan of critical hits. item 3139 item 3156 item 3812 item 3046

Dengeden1 votes

I meant Ar/MR. Kinda forgot about the MR/AD items. My point stands though, you can buy one of those after getting 2 pure damage items, never before that and buying a 2nd one after that is incredibly risky because, again, you'll do no damage.

That's a Graves build at best and a terrible one at that. I'm not bad enough to rely on nothing but PD for crits and not amplifying it with ER or IE.

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

No damage? Just between these four items, you'd have an extra 270 attack damage. item 3072 +75AD item 3139 +65AD item 3156 +55AD item 3812 +75AD

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

Doesn't help that nomicon's grievous wounds requires their enemy to be below 40%hp, which thanks tall the buffs marksmen got, makes that incredibly unlikely unless against another mage; but then what's the point? Riot removed nearly all spellvamp from the game, so most mages can't can't even heal up like the marksmen.

CoolKnightST1 votes

It might have lost it's identity. Ballance wise it's actually still in a pretty healthy spot. You still have reasons to go item 3003, item 3027. Hell even the new item 3174 can be usefull in certain situational moments.

Having the GW on item 3165 is actually not that bad. However what worries me more is that it's the only item to get access to these type of stats. This makes me question the fact of having GW on the item in the first place. I have seen a lot of lategame scenario's where people struggle against healing champions where we just didn't have a champions that could build item 3165.

This creates the question why riot simply didn't create dubble items from the same componements like they did with the marksmen update with item 3087 & item 3094.

Overal I have the feeling item 3165 more functions as a core item right now. And I think it's hard to judge if this should be changed now mages are in the position they are now.
