Captain (Boot Enchant)

In 4.20, the boost to minions was removed from captain. In some regards this makes sense, with elixir of ruin gaining a similar effect, but this is problematic.

Elixirs are expensive, and champions who relied on the speed boost from captain would be stuck spending thousands of gold on the same effect that previously could be bought for 800 down to 600 one time only.

They aren't even available on all maps because of the secondary effect relating to towers.

Without the boost, these champions can perform poorly, and there was no reason for a nerf to begin with.

The solution is simple: Give Captain back a 20% movement aura for pets only. You can even exclude pets from ruin and make THAT one minions only, or just have only the higher bonus apply so ruined pets get their 15% tower damage still.

Otherwise, pets all need an innate movespeed buff to compensate. That means Tibbers, voidlings, ghouls and revenants, Morde's ghosts, and spiderlings.

Please, Riot. Avoid collateral damage in your nerfs. Rebuff Captain for pets.

Also, guys, please post. This new board is terrible about burying important threads under a bunch of nonsense.

Can please I get a red response as to whether or not the change was meant to hurt pet champions in this way? Thanks.

This has been brought up several times already.

Someone else pointed out that Captains got their effect nerfed and got no compensation at all for doing so. It's really a shame.

I'll throw my hat in with Khold, give Captain's the pet movement speed aura back so that Tibbers can move faster than a slug. It was a fun itemization option.

I'm still waiting on that explanation myself. Crystal Scepter/Captain's Annie was a ton of fun as an alternative to the DFG burst nonsense.

A really good point, actually, and one I'm not sure they considered.

I'm not sure how important that extra movement speed is, though. I rarely see Annie / Shaco / Mordekaiser / Malzahar / etc. actually buy Captain boots, and I'm not sure pet movement is ever a really big concern when a team buys Captain boots. Still, adding that back would make the Elises of the world happier, and I don't think it would have any huge balance ramifications.

Ultimately, however, Captain is an under-purchased and relatively low-power option compared to the others. I'd rather see it phased out entirely in favor of something with a bit more strategic utility.

It's just about 100% mandatory on AD Malz, and I've seen many Yoricks buy it as well. With the new Malz skin, it just rubs salt in the wound. I would buy it, but I'm hesitant to do so if they're going to trash him the way they did AP Trist.

The problem is some champions (AD Malzahar, Yorick) relied on Captain to have their pets actually get in range to do anything; a lot of the time champions can simply outrun the pets, making them mana intensive but still poor zoning tools instead of an actual useful pet.

It's entirely possible they might: Riot has a history of stomping down off-builds that completely change the manner in which a champion plays. Opinions on this vary, but I, for one, consider it a good thing: going into a game not knowing what your opponent/teammate is going to be doing is bad for clarity in a game that already suffers from some clarity issues and has a HUGE burden of knowledge even just remembering a champion's NORMAL damage threats.

But yeah...that's one champion it's mandatory on, out of...well, a lot. I think the pet movement system in general needs an update (I'd have them inherit your movement speed items, personally...so they can always keep up with you), and Captain boots need to disappear entirely.

Captain is so expensive, and it doesn't live up to the price since they removed the boost. The enchantment gave Yorick ghouls an extra attack on a fleeing target. An Annie with captain and a item 3116 had a Tibbers that actually got to auto attack things. AD Malzahar loved having his voidlings get around the battlefield quicker.

I would love compensation buffs for pet movement speeds.

I've been playing AD Malz on LotPK. He's not HORRIBLE but he needs the compensation buff or Captain rebuff to really shine. For now it's just funny to watch the tiny purple Poro 1v1 the King and win.

This could really use a red post.

Moving into season 5 and still no response. Can we PLEASE get some information on the thought behind flat nerfing pet champions? Or better, a simple rebuff as stated above to allow pets to keep the passive aura.

Kholdstare131 votes

Reminder to everyone that this is STILL an issue.

S5: The problem lives.

AD Malz is getting impatient.

URF exacerbates the problem. Champions move so fast. Pet champions either need inherent flat buffs to compensate for this, or for you to add the pet speed aura back onto these boots.
