I mean we have champion shards, so why not skin shards? I mostly ask because if u get legendary (and above) skin shards, it's quite difficult to unlock them, since there is no reliable way to get Orange essence (unless I missed sth).
I'd like a more convincing argument (if possible please) than, Riot would lose money if they did.

I mean that was kind of the point. They are giving you a means in which to unlock free content that normally costs $$$. Why would you expect them to make it easy? People are always up in arms about a company wanting to make money, but rejoining reality for a second, there are very practical reasons for that. Riot has costs in infrastructure, salaries, benefits, etc in order to produce this game. There needs to be an income stream, or we can try to convince everyone that they should do work with 0 compensation. I know that I like getting paid for my services or any good that I produce.
