Im kind of serious when i say this, I think that i have a point and i would like your opinion about it.

i feel that there isnt much counterplay against him. I dont mean that it cant be beaten, cause it can, its just that i feel that you are always at a disadvantage because there is little counterplay due to his q reset. And his q reset itself is not the problem, its the reset no matter what you do.

"But ryze has mana problems" All champs do. "But ryze is squishy" Most ap are. "The q damage isnt that high" But it is damage.

The thing is that you always have free poke with q, so he can zone you with the treat of a q (and w). But lets focus on q. As ryze, you lose nothing by starting your combo with q, even if you miss, at least after you get tear. If you are facing ryze, you have to stay away or try to dodge, if you go back, he succeeds, he has effectively zoned you. If you dodge, except for avoiding the poke, you accomplished nothing, you still are zoned (wq threat), if you try to punish him, he will still has his q since it resets with any other ability. There is no way you can punish that missed q.

I mean, sure, he is vulnerable once he trows all of his combo, but again, every champion is. But he is the only one who doesnt gets punished for missing an important spell. If he misses and you turn back, he can still hit you with q as much as 2 times. ----> No counterplay, no punish.

And there is no problem really with the resets, but i feel that his q reset needs to be tied with a confirmed hit, either with a minion, monster or champion. His main damage source is basically always available.

What im trying to say is that ryze has no real weakness as a champion, sure, the player controlling it may play bad, but hypothetically, in lane and when not in combat, he always has his q available, even if he is farming hard with it since you normally hold w for champions.

And the other problem is that the q is the detonator of the marks, so even if you initiate and you miss, you can always e and try again for the extra damage on detonation.

My proposal is to condition ryze q's cooldown on hit (if he misses the first one he dont get the cooldown reset on his first extra ability, though he gets it on the second, forcing him to ewq instead of eqwq). So you force him to wait for his normal cd or you can force a trade when he has to choose the lesser combo.

I think this minor change will not hurt his laning phase if he is good (hits his q's) and the zoning potential will be untouched, but it will give some breathing room for opponents and will reward you with a chance of a decent trade if you dodge, or at the very end, you will be able to recover some ground if you were zoned. And his q cooldown isnt that high to begin with, so rito plz. Take this suggestion into consideration.

Opinions?

It's already easy to dodge his Q's projectile, with the exception of every 13 seconds where you may be rooted down for .75 - 2 seconds.

If you play poke mages, such as Ziggs or Lux. You can simply zone Ryze away from farm. Harass from afar with little retaliation. Never go in to autoattack range, unless you are ready to commit.

If you play burst mages, like Annie, go for short trades. You will most likely go even with Ryze. Remember to keep your head cool, and dodge his Q's. Make sure to stay away from fluxed minions.

If you play a battle mage, you should have an easy time out-sustaining him. Ryze has no innate way of recovering health, while most other battle mages do. If playing Karthus, poke him with Q's.
