You know melee top lane is bad when "Why pick X melee over pick Ryze or Gnar" comes up every game

from my understanding Fiora if played correctly destroys both ryze and Gnar... though she has to be played correctly for that so guess you cant count her

If it's a champion with limited mobility like Garen, I honestly say you'd be hard pressed to find good situations to use said champion regardless except for their specific niche.

Honestly though, the funny thing about Ryze and Gnar is that if you have a champion with a significantly quick gap closer, it's actually somewhat easy to deal with the match up in at least some way.

The only melees who are still seeing consistent success in my games are irelia and maokai, because they both have the sustain to deal with ranged harass, and they both have point and click dashes and CC, which lets them actually trade with ranged champs.

Or Yorick or Pantheon or Riven.... There's lots of bruisers that have either a ranged poke or a gap closer + CC. Garen just has the sustain to lose trades but not have to b like everyone else. Darius matches up well with Ryze.

Is gnar really that good? Thought he was trash so haven't used him since I took a break after he was released.and came back.

maybe some people can't play ryze or gnar
