Toplane help

I used to be a support main but recently I've decided to get back into top lane. Unfortunately I havent played top in a long LONG time so I have no real feel for the matchups and always end up losing lane and having to play uber defensively. Is there a recommended top champ that I can play nice and safe while getting a feel for Top again?

Poppy. She's cheap, gives your team utility, and counters most fighters since most fighters have some dash
