Will there ever be improvements to the hidden MMR calculation process?
Old topic, but I don't agree with a ranked system in which rank is determined solely by win-loss record for a 5v5 game. Measurements of skill other than W-L are available and are being used to determine champion mastery grades and to detect and group smurfs in sub-level 30 games so that smurfs don't compete with new players. Why not implement metrics that are known to be strong indicators of skill level to determine MMR gained or lost in ranked matches?
I think it's problematic that players are very likely to accumulate hundreds of games before reaching their true rating and finally being able to compete with 9 other players of the same skill level. Allowing for matchmaking luck to play such a large role in determining MMR also leads to large skill variance between players that are supposedly of the same rank. I've participated in so many games in which I've found I was significantly worse (better) than players ranked below (above) me.
The system is imperfect, so why not overhaul it for a chance to make ranked play more fair and more enjoyable (and possibly even establish a new standard for all MOBAs to follow)?
