I mean sure he's a tank but he doesn't do as much damage as Amumu or Nautilus.
Or tank harder than Malphite or Alistar.
Or am I building him wrong? I just tend to feel like a W Q bot. If I wanted that, i'd play Alistar.

RogueWill2 votesHis ult is a min Alistar Ult for everyone on your team (that is inside) so damage dealers become more tanky without needing to sink gold in defensive items. His CC is on a fairly short CD (unlike Allistar which are rather high) which lets him do several rotations in a single teamfight while still having ammount of cc cmparable to nautilius (and way more than amumu) so he might not be as tanky himself but on effective value since he makes his team tankier as well woudl be comparabel to Naut or amumu

Basically, he's extremely good at protecting his team from enemies and enabling them to survive and deal their damage. His lockdown is very reliable and his utility (from vision and damage reduction) massive.
In addition, Maokai is a relatively strong laner and rather safe against most match-ups. His WQ are strong tools for assisting ganks or when performing teleport-ganks, which make him a great match with damage-oriented junglers (i.e. Elise, Lee Sin, Kindred, etc).
