Out of all the things the "meta sheep" do why is warding never it?

xelaker··93 votes·3,444 views

seriously the pros ward out the ass 24/7 and when I ask my support if he can ward -literally anything- he tells me to do it myself... number of wards placed ought to factor into the champ ranking system or something geez. you want an S? 10 wards ain't gonna cut it.

I enjoy warding, it's lovely to see a gank coming a mile away or to see that little adc try and sneak your blue and the whole team is there to stomp on him. am I just some weirdo?

Don't ask a support who is out wards to ward. That's the only rule on asking supports to ward. Other than that, yes, people should ward more. I'm not gonna complain though because I rush sightstone and try to ward as much as I can, so I get the competitive edge.

i never mentioned being out of wards lol but yea, 2nd back is always sightstone unless its getting crazy weird out there lol

Are you sure? I've met people who were to stupid to know how to check the number of charges on a warding totem. I've been flamed by people who were too stupid to check the number of charges on a warding totem.

Warding does count towards champ mastery score.

Warlord Scrap12 votes

Why was this downvoted warding does count towards mastery just not enough to make it impossible to get an s without warding

MrHaZeYo5 votes

I wouldn't say that, I've seen people go 7 CS/Min 5+ KDA, 35% Damage Share and 60% KP with 2 wards get a A+ lol.

But thanks for sticking up for me :).

What really bugs me is when your team doesn't ward. I have all 4 possible wards up and our map only has 4 wards. (supp main)

It is getting crazy weird out there. I don't know why supports aren't building sightstone. Particularly on Zyra Brand and the less meta Lux. You do a ton of damage sure but you aren't there to do damage. You have plenty of base damage to dish out you don't need that item 1026 as much as your team needs item 2049

No sightstone No win.

I have had to tell so many supports they are missing an item.. then they counter back about doing more damage to win team fights or something... with wards you'll get better teamfights you wont get into fights you can't win.

it is so terrible out there :/.

As a Zyra main, rushing Blasting Wand for any reason is a mistake.

but what if you need to do all the damages??

Frightning5 votes

It's simple, you get item 2301 on mages (or item 2303 on tanky sups) and then build whatever else makes sense on that champion given the situation you are in. So if you want to do the damages on Zyra you build item 2301, then get the rest of your AP build (e.g. item 3165, item 3089, etc.) You still provide the easily rotated warding that the sup is supposed to provide (it's up to the rest of the team to keep total ward counts on the map up to par, but your wards can be moved to any current hot-spot at no significant opportunity cost, losing vision of some currently unimportant part of the map isn't a problem, and a trinket user would only have a fresh ward available if they hadn't already used their trinket, which shouldn't typically be the case if they are actually doing a good job warding). This also lets you get item 3341 to help deny enemy vision of important locations at key moments (sweeping dragon right before it spawns, or baron when you are in a position to threaten that you can take it if they don't show up to contest; yay baron baits, brought to you by destroyed enemy baron wards).

Thank you, if you're playing a mage support you're gimping yourself rushing a SS.

MrHaZeYo1 votes

Your a support though, by not rushing a SS, or at least getting it 2nd item (I don't count boots as a item, you get them as you see fit in most senerios) you gimp your ADC (Not warding to protect them, sure you can use Yellow but it's ward are significant shorter early game, and you can't get as many down), you gimp your jungler's dragon control (Warding next to enemy blue (when your blue side) or the Red buff bumper bush or by the jump plant (when your purple side) allows your jungler, your mid, and your bot lane to get a idea of where the jungler is. To some extent you can gimp your mid laner as well, because knowing where the jungler is, if they are in the river or bot side jungle enables them to safely play to the other side of the lane.

I understand if you get vastly ahead as a Mage Support, buying more AP could downright snowball your lane, and in that senerio I'm as a player, ok with you putting off buying SS for a bit, but to not get it eventually hurts your entire team as it's part of the supports responability.

I do think every lane should be warding as much as possible, but outside of Support and some Junglers who buy Trackers Knife, they just can't physically put down as many wards.

3TWarrior1 votes

ok, but what happens when champions such as Evelynn or Shaco or Rengar decide to make bottom lane into a picnic?

suddenly, damage can mean a lot more than extra wards when the base ward can cover the usual attack route

it's a case by case scenario but in most cases, Poke supports tend to favor damage over vision that does not provide utility to them

in addition, most poke supports come to bottom lane so that they can snowball from the multiple champions available should the ADC not manage to snag the kill. an extra 40 AP could mean the difference between an early snowball victory and defeat

factor in that you can only have 1 stealth ward active at a time and sightstone becomes far less valuable than it used to be

the only way you get 2 wards at the same time is when you hit level 9, by which point the team fighting stage is already beginning or has already begun

EDIT: I AM A LITTLE OUT OF DATE as I do not know the exact function of control wards and explorer wards

MrHaZeYo1 votes

Not always true, deeper wards will grant you better safety vs those champions. Warding Eve's camps will give you a idea of where she is and where she is headed. Shaco can be tricky, but warding by dragon and other optimal positions will show you him before he even thinks of going invis for the gank, so you'll know hes coming.

Rengar, like Noc, if you see the screen dim, just assume he's ganking you and back off.

it's a case by case scenario but in most cases, Poke supports tend to favor damage over vision that does not provide utility to them

Your job is to support the AD, keep them alive, in a world where item 3107 and item 3190 exsite., you should be rushing them with SS upgrade on every Enchantress, outside of maybe Sona.

Brand, Zyra, Malz are different stories but even so you should still be getting item 2301 before going full AP. Shit even they still build like Enchanters nowadays.

factor in that you can only have 1 stealth ward active at a time and sightstone becomes far less valuable than it used to be

Just a FYI, your yellow trinket is not even close equal to a Sightstone. Even at lvl 18, a Yellow ward will not stay out as long as a SS ward. The CD is even worse and you can only hold 2 at a time max. Plus if your not getting SS and hanging onto Yellow Trinkets you are not getting Red Trinkets to clear wards.

in addition, most poke supports come to bottom lane so that they can snowball from the multiple champions available should the ADC not manage to snag the kill. an extra 40 AP could mean the difference between an early snowball victory and defeat

The Idea of the 3 powerful Mage supps, was to just negate the ADC, but they still build SS, squishy immobile mages in a early game jungle meta will get them deleted and anti snowballed. They have high enough base damage and DoTs that they don't need a crap ton of AP as a Syndra would. All 3 of them really just need Sorc Pen Boots, Liandrys and Ryalis to be effective.

the only way you get 2 wards at the same time is when you hit level 9, by which point the team fighting stage is already beginning or has already begun

You should still be warding during mid to late game too, not just lane phase lol.

The strongest Supports right now are the peelers/anti divers.

Lulu, Nami, Thresh, Janna, and Karma.

SlashStriker10 votes

mid lane buys Control Wards top lane buys control Wards but almost adc never buys control wards?

You get all the gold and you cannot offer 75 gold for a fkin ward? If you never buy it why should your support buy it?

I personally think that both support and adc should have at least 1 control ward in their inventory just in case

ADC should also update their trinkets once they hit level 9 unless they plan to ward around with yellow trinket. Blue trinket makes it great scout on viable objectives or to prevent enemy from ganking you while you are farming a lane

Frightning1 votes

I usually stick w/ item 3340, even on ADCs, because I can have 2 wards up at once, whereas, with item 3363 I only get 1 up at once max. I can see the value on having someone on the team have a item 3363 for the option to 'spot check' objectives towards late game if you vision was cleared out or timed out and the enemy may be there. (You can also check a potentially deadly bush at a safe distance with it too).

Bodkins Odds4 votes

I feel like item 3363 is better on the mid laner most games, the extra ward from item 3340 is too good most of the time.

Warding doesn't make for #LCSBigPlays, warding doesn't contribute to mastery score, warding doesn't count toward your KDA. That's why the baddies don't do it.

JavelinJoe13 votes

Yet they do not realize the obvious irony here

Frightning13 votes

Indirectly, (and in a vital way), it contributes to all of those things.

DrCyanide3 votes

This is why I'm liking a lot of the EU LCS casters, they're putting a lot of emphasis on warding and vision.

They show vision toggles every game, point out the number of pink wards in a team's inventory, point out that where the wards are on the map shows you where the team is looking to make a play, etc.

(NA may do the same, I just don't watch it)

Frightning12 votes

They do talk about vision sometimes. I still remember the casters astonishment when a RekSai face checked in burrowed state 3 enemies and got deleted, and then the casters watching the replay finally figured out what happened: The RekSai couldn't see them with Tremor Sense because they all stood perfectly still because they knew the RekSai was coming thanks to a nearby ward on the river.

Zelorxon8 votes

Because people have been brainwashed by centuries of propaganda into thinking smart=beta, same reason why people don't read the instruction manuals or they don't squeeze the toothpaste tube from the bottom, it's the new century superstition.

Back when i played starcraft 1 the golden rule was "keep your numbers low" which means, always have your resources allocated and in action, which translates in league: don't sit on 2 wards, use them as much as possible and save just one if your team is garbage and you need to rotate to other parts of the map that aren't your responsibility or for personal use (autoing a target that is using the bush to avoid being clicked on).

People are so stupid that are deeply convinced that using wards= nerd loser, which is completely the opposite.

A pink ward costs 75g, killing a ward gives you 30g= WARDS COST TWO MINIONS IF YOU USE THEM AS VISION COVERAGE AND ONE MINION OR LESS IF YOU USE THEM AS WARD SWEEPERS.

Too hard to understand, you require to have done calculus to reach this levels of truth.

AdeBug5 votes

Cus... in low elo, games are rarely played around vision, and won due to vision. I am a heavy warder and I beg my team almost every game to help me out, no matter my role, and no matter if they troll and place 3 or 4 wards on top of each other near base. But we all know that low elo does not look at the mini map to properly use this vision advantage, nor tries to make plays around it. They also fail to ping missing, or fail to react when another lane pings missing and a ward in the river or a scuttle is also showing incoming danger... I disagree with you implying that it's the support's job, though, they can only do so much as others stated, and I myself noticed in games how my wards would be the only ones lighting up a really dark map, again, regardless of my role, and again, after also taking the poor ignored scuttle(s). I dream of the day when everyone uses their 2 FREE, I repeat: FREE! wards, plus a control ward. Each. And if you still insist it's the support's main job, at least take their hand and smart ping your intentions and walk together to ward, because deep or shallow, warding is still a dangerous job.

you can't conclude overpowered from pro play unless you are in the same ''league''

it's a different environment with different strategy and infinitely more communication and teamplay

there is a certain playstyle called proxy sion which is completely bonkers broken in bronze and wins you every game though try it in diamond and you will most certainly start to lose a lot of your games

different leagues and environments have different ''broken'' or ''overpowered'' problems

Interesting how you jump the bandwagon and blame the support. That's usually how it goes. Entire team has 2x wards ready, yet somehow blames the support when they walk in an unwarded jungle and die.

You could've picked jungle, mid, ADC or top, yet chose support to further your arguement. By doing that you're just enforcing an already erroneous stereotype.

Praetor Notorias3 votes

As far as I can tell, the number of wards you place and their spacing factors into your mastery score. That's the only thing I can come up with on how I get S's on some support games where I get low assists. I mean, generally speaking good warding will usually result in more kills and objectives regardless of elo. It's static information which benefits always.

Bad warding often covers up warding though. It doesn't matter how many wards are out there if they are in the wrong spot. People ward poorly and think they are helping, or they ward poorly and see no benefit from it. Bad warding can create incorrect information or incomplete information. Like people who are addicted to putting wards in the bush, sometimes that's just simply the wrong place to put it.

Good warding covers avenues and allows you to use subtraction to eliminate where enemies might can be. Bad warding reveals areas without considering the movement of the champions (ie, always warding the blue buff bush instead of just behind it where it reveals 4 lanes of movement). Sometimes you wanna ward the blue buff, sometimes you just wanna know if anyone walked through there.

rafflesz3 votes

Because they made it so you couldnt ward effectively on your own. It needs to be a team effort to be effective.

The Sword Saint3 votes

Because they don't understand the vision game, like really understand it, at all. Sure they may be vaguely thinking that it helps them not get ganked or whatever, but that's the extent of how far the average player thinks about wards and if they feel strong enough to 2v1 or like they have more important things to worry about they just don't consider what other impact warding has.

They don't think about how, maybe they ARE too strong atm to get ganked but that ward might catch someone roaming on someone else or entering the jungler or sneaking an objective or who knows what. They don't really get that establishing a vision line and then moving that line forward is key to consistently taking steps towards pushing a lead and closing out a game against any team who aren't making so many constant positioning errors that it doesn't matter. It doesn't cross their mind that they could ward an area, not to see enemies, but to hide there themselves and get free kills out of someone walking by.

It's just not even on their radar. It was worse back in the day when we had no trinkets or sightstones and everyone had to pay money for every single ward. At least nowadays people don't take a minor gold hit every time they participate in vision - even the 75g we pay per pink ward nowadays is a joke for how impactful they are and only a moron would see 75g for a pink and rather buy another 50g potion instead at anything other than level 1.

Kaeblen3 votes

of course the support tells you to ward yourself--he's used to incompetent adc's and wants more than 3 across the map...

Before you convince people about the need to ward, first convince them that the mini-map exists. It's like explaining "blue" to a blind person some times. (>_>)

I love ADCs who buy item 2055 on second or third back. Sometimes even first back when we get the edge on bot. Helps a ton for the rest of the team and gives me more gold for items. Yes. 75 gold matters A LOT early on.

People who don't buy item 2055 at all should not have the right to complain about dying from surprise attacks. They brought it upon themselves by leaving the map darker than the space.

Honest answer? Warding isn't fun. As a support main, I can tell you it isn't fun, ward items aren't interesting or flashy and its basically work. Its non-interactive. I do it as its a needed function, but warding is probably my least favorite function in this game.

I can tell you without hesitation, warding is boring so no one wants to do it.
