Unyielding seems like a "noob trap", doesn't it?

5% extra MR/Armour.

Due to the way these stats work, by the time you get enough of them for 5% to be significant, you don't really benefit from it anyway.

For example: 100 Armour/MR becomes 105, and when you take diminishing returns into account, how much are you really getting form those 5 extra points?

There are no diminishing returns.

A single point of armour or magic resistance is 1% extra effective HP against that damage type.

So that mastery, if you have 100 bonus armour (unlikely, it would be much higher) and 5,000 HP as a tank, gives 250 effective HP against physical damage.

Pretty sure there are diminishing returns....?

It only seems to give diminishing returns if you look at the DR percent value.

250 effective HP is 250 HP. That's like a fourth of an unmitigated ADC's crit after you build bonus armour. Armour scales with your health, so building more armour makes your health more valuable, and vice versa.

Yes, and that is what makes me concerned, so...

It only seems that way, but it works out to be even.

Going from 5% DR to 6% DR isn't a huge reduction in damage, but 85% DR to 86% DR is quite substantial. Assuming a 1000 damage attack:

5% DR = 950 Damage 6% DR = 940 Damage 85% DR = 150 Damage 86% DR = 140 Damage

Each point of DR reduces damage by the same amount (10 damage). Subtracting 10 damage from 950 damage is nothing special. Subtracting 10 damage from 150 damage is quite a bit less. You still save 10 damage either way, but in one scenario that 10 damage means a lot more than the other.

For another example, imagine you reduce all damage by a flat 1. Not 1%, just 1 damage. Would that reduction be more helpful if enemies were doing 10 damage, or 100? Both save you 1 HP. However in one scenario you're reducing incoming damage by 10%, and the other you're only reducing it by 1%.

The closer the amount of damage you're reducing gets to the amount of damage you're taking, the more each percent is protecting you despite all of the percents being worth the same. A bit confusing, but it works out.

There are, it's just that most people are afraid of math.

And you know what happens when you go from 98% damage reduction to 99%? You can take twice as much damage. It just takes doubling the stat again to get there. So higher resistances seem less effective but they use an equation that values each point as much as the last. It just doesn't seem that way because yeah last whisper does take a % away and you want a bigger health base to multiply the effectiveness of your resistances. And you only have 6 item slots to spend like 15k gold so the best combination of health and resistance is usually a certain way.

they should swap it with legendary guardian in my opinion, and buff it so it is more significant to compete with the tenacity/slow resist

Well the thing is all of the first tier masteries are very small bonuses. Sorcery is only gives two extra damage for every hundred. I would not be surprised if that worked out to be worth even less than Unyielding in gold value. You would usually have to be approaching full build to get half an amp tome's worth of damage out of it.

Diminishing returns don't exist on resistances, or even % damage reduction stacking.

Each % damage reduction that you stack has increased value on the 0-100% scale, same as CDR.

If you have 0% damage reduction, and gain 20%, you're taking 4/5 of the damage you would before you get it.

If you have 90% damage reduction and gain 2% more (effectively 20%), you're still taking 4/5 of the damage you would before you get it.

Yes, 2 is less than 20, but on a 0-100% scale, the value of each % increases exponentially.

And even so, the % damage reduction is effectively a coefficient. It doesn't actually mean anything...its just a representative value.

If you have 100 armor, you actually have 200% EHP vs physical damage, though it can effectively be considered 50% damage reduction.

You're talking about a T1 mastery here. It's not meant to be game changing or even make an impact, it's a little free minor stat increase that you simply get on the way down to get the stuff that actually impacts the game. If anything, at 200 armor I'm not complaining about a free 10 extra at no cost.

The thing is, I'm not comparing it to anything other than it's alternative; Recovery. I've tried it with Doran Shield start and it seems like quite the big advantage at the start.

It's better than 24 hp regen a minute in later parts of the game. But yes it's kinda weak. But all first tier masteries are super weak.

I think the problem is you have to choose between early game sustain or slight late game resistance while ferocity specs get an all game multiplier. But they are incredibly minor masteries it hardly matters.
